Chapter 3: Formal(not so formal) Introductions

Date: Sunday 10/4/20XX

Location: Cafe Leblanc

POV: Akira Kurusu

Ruin...Rehabilitation... I thought carefully as I pulled on my clothes. That was truly a strange dream. What did it mean?

"Looks like you're up," Sojiro came in, finding me sitting on the bed. "Well then, let's go introduce ourselves properly to the staff about your transfer. The school you're attending is in the Aoyama district. It'll take a while to get there by train. I'll drive you there, but just for today. Every time after this, you'll be taking the train. Let's go."

Eventually, we arrived at Shujin Academy. The school was massive, with three floors and a metal gate out front. It also connected another large building nearby. "Do me a favour and behave yourself, alright?" He mentioned. "Don't get me wrong, I don't care what happens to you. Just don't cause me any trouble."

"Understood," I muttered.

We walked into the school, and it was just as impressive inside. It was also just as massive, and it gave off a modern feel to the classrooms and other facilities. Finding the principal's office, we entered to find two people: a fat, bald man in a yellow suit and a slim, youthful-looking black-haired woman. She was wearing a yellow long-sleeved shirt striped with white and red horizontal lines, a blue denim skirt, and white heels. She was tired, yawning as Sojiro and the principal talked about my current status in the school. I tuned out of the conversation until Sojiro finished signing a form.

"To reiterate, just so we're clear," the principal proclaimed, "you will immediately be expelled if you cause any problems. In my opinion, you're nothing but a liability, but we had our circumstances to consider. Whatever you might have gotten away with in your hometown...those days are over. If you are thrown out of our school, there will be no place for you to go. Keep that in mind."

He directed our attention to the woman. "This is your teacher in charge of your class."

"I'm Sadayo Kawakami," she stated, clearly bored but was trying to keep it professional. "Here's your student ID." Placing my ID on the table, I noticed that there was a folded pink piece of paper (possibly a flyer) underneath. Realising what she had done, she quickly snatched it away while I picked up the ID. "Be sure to read the school rules." She continued. "Any violations will send you straight to the guidance office. And, if by chance you cause any problems, I won't be able to protect you at all. That is your promise, yes, Principal Kobayakakawa?"

"He is responsible for all his actions."

"But really though, why me? There should've been better candidates."

"It was a sudden transfer, and your class was the only one with an opening."

"If you're done explaining things," Sojiro interrupted. "mind if we get going? I got a store to get back to."

"Sakura-san, please keep a close eye on him. Don't let him cause any trouble outside." The principal added. "Well, I'll be sure to have a serious talk to him about the situation he's in."

Kawakami sighed. "Come to the faculty office tomorrow when you arrive at school. I'll show you to your classroom." "Of course, Kawakami-sensei." I bowed politely.

We then left the room. As we exited, I noticed someone out of the corner of my eye. A guy about the same height as me, wearing a white t-shirt with the word MUSIC in red on it, black jeans, bright blue sneakers with orange laces, and a black short-sleeve jacket. He appeared to be listening to music on a pair of black and neon-blue headphones. His face was obscured by the two adults next to him. They all appeared to be waiting outside the office.

Strange...I felt as though I'd seen him before.

We went back to the front gates. "Everyone's giving you the cold shoulder," Sojiro said, walking back to the car. "That's what having a criminal record does to you. Turns out your past follows you wherever you go. By the way...if you get expelled now, I won't hesitate to kick you out. Got it?" he repeated.

"Don't worry, I'll be careful," I murmured. "But who knows? Maybe I'll scrape by."

"*sigh* School never changes, huh?"

Time: Morning

Location: Shujin Academy

POV: Hiroto Arisato

"And I believe that should be all, Sanada-san. You are now an official teacher at Shujin Academy."

"Why, thank you very much!"

"Perhaps you would like to meet the rest of the staff before your first class tomorrow," the principal suggested. "And maybe introduce them to your nephew?"

"Of course!" She said, cheerily.

A buzzing noise came from Akihiko's pocket. "Excuse me, I better take this," he muttered. He pulled out his phone from his pocket. "Sanada speaking. Yes...okay, I'm on my way." He quickly hung up.

"Sorry about this, but I have to go now. They need me over there."

"That's perfectly fine."

"Thank you for admitting him in," Minako mentioned as we stepped outside.

We finally got out of there! I couldn't admit it to everyone, but I was so bored. My uncle, aunt, and the principal were actually talking for a very long time, mostly about Minako's employment. My registration had taken about five minutes in comparison. However, I couldn't help but feel proud of her. She seemed to be really happy. Akihiko must felt the same, considering how he made out with her a bit before waving goodbye and heading to the crime scene.

Rolling my eyes, I asked Minako if I could explore the school on my own before meeting her at the gates once she met with all the teachers. She agreed, leaving me to wander around.

Entering the school's courtyard, I was surprised to find that there were sakura blossoms already on the trees. The trees were all blooming with flowers, bright pink petals slowly falling to the ground as I analysed them carefully, mesmerised.

I almost didn't notice two other people enter the courtyard.

Hearing their footsteps, I swiftly dived behind a bench. I let them talk for a few seconds before I peered around the side. It was the female teacher who had come out of the principal's office before we went in. She was talking to a black-haired, strong-looking man in a white t-shirt, black pants, and a silver whistle around his neck. My guess was that he was a PE teacher. However, something didn't feel right about him. His behaviour seemed to be almost too much like an act.

I decided to try and overhear their conversation.

"What a troublesome situation." the PE teacher remarked, prompting a sigh from the female teacher. "I can't believe they pushed someone with a record on me," she complained. "A male teacher would be better suited for this..."

Record? Do they mean like a criminal record? Now that I think about it, I do remember seeing another student exit out of the school. He's probably a transfer like I am.

"Why in the world was someone like that admitted here?"

"Who knows? It was the principal's decision. I was told that it's for the school's reputation."

"I would've thought that my volleyball team has contributed more than enough to cover that."

A volleyball team? Never heard about that when I got here...then again, I may or may not have tuned out that part. Also, the school's reputation? What's up with that?

"That's certainly true."

"Be careful, okay? Then again, if anything were to happen, I'd kick out a student like that right away."

"I keep wishing that he'd just end up not coming to school. Still, that isn't something I shouldn't be saying as a teacher..."

"Anyway, speaking of new people, I heard we have a new staff member."

"Oh, yes! You're talking about Sanada-san?"

They're talking about Aunt Minako now.

"Yeah. It's about time someone whips those first-years into shape."

"I just so happened to run into her in the hallway. She seems like a very nice person. Although I feel like I've heard her last name somewhere before..."

"Well, I should be returning to practice."

"Oh right, the tournament's coming up, isn't it?"

A tournament...

Satisfied with all the information I had gathered, I waited for them to leave. The PE teacher then mentioned something about having to make up for the track team. That triggered my interest. The two of them left, leaving me to ponder what they had said.

I stood up from the bench, resolving to think about it later when someone called out: "Hiroto? Is that you?"

I froze in my tracks.

No way...that couldn't be who I thought it was. But there were only two people I could remember who had that voice. I turned around to find a girl with her crimson hair in a ponytail, wearing the black and red winter uniform of Shujin Academy. I...could never forget their faces. Not after what happened.

"K...Kasumi?" I whispered, still unbelieving at the fact that she stood before me.

"It really is you!" she yelled excitedly, tackling me to the ground with a hug. Soon we were both on the ground, laughing. "I thought I would never see you again! After you disappeared, I really wanted to talk to you! But I couldn't reach your number, so I thought you were mad at me." She looked at me, her eyes tearing up slightly. "You...you aren't mad at me, right?"

"No...it's okay," I murmured softly. "I just needed some time to process. Wait, if you're alive, then..." The realisation slapped me in the face as I sat up. "Sumire...I saw one of you lying on the ground...but I couldn't tell who it was because of the mist..."

Kasumi's expression then became downright depressed. "She's gone. I...couldn't save her." She hugged me tightly, her tears flowing into my shirt. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I wasn't fast enough to save her! It's all my fault!" She sobbed miserably.

My heart seemed to fracture into a million pieces. Kasumi had confirmed it. Sumire was gone, now. I held her twin sister in my arms, trying to comfort her, but in the end, I couldn't help but cry too.

After a while, the mood had become melancholic. We finally released each other to sit on the bench together and sat in silence for a bit.

While I was glad that Kasumi had survived, I couldn't help but feel empty. Like something was missing.

"I'm sorry," Kasumi apologised again, "I didn't mean to place all of my pent-up feelings on you. It's just that you're the only one I feel like I can open up to. When you left, I couldn't talk about the incident to anyone. So when I saw that you were here, I just..."

"Stop."

"Huh?"

"As I said before, it's okay. Believe me, I'm just as torn up about this as you are." I reached out and clenched her shoulders, trying my best to get through to her. "You're my best friend, and I really hate to see you like this. So don't beat yourself up, okay? Sumire...Sumi wouldn't want you to."

"But..."

"She would want you to live for the both of you. I went through the same thing. I know what it's like now."

Kasumi was silent for about a minute. "You're right...Sumire wouldn't want me to be all depressed like this. It's not in my personality, after all." She got up, standing tall in front of the bench. "The three of us made a promise together, remember? That we would fulfill our dreams, no matter what!" She now smiled, radiating confident energy. "That applies to you too, you know!"

I nodded, also standing up from the bench.

"We'll do it. For her." I affirmed.

To my surprise, she gave me another hug, gentler this time. "You're actually really good at motivating people." She mentioned. "I feel like if you weren't here, I would be too afraid to do anything."

"Is that so?" I teased. "Then I guess I should transfer back to Iwatodai and see how you go!"

"Noo! Don't leave me here! I'll be lonelyyyyy!"

I cracked up at her reaction. "Just kidding."

"You can be such a meanie sometimes..." She pouted.

My phone vibrated, making us realise the position we were in. Quickly, we sprung apart. Kasumi's face was a bit red, and she tried not to look at me directly. I felt my own face getting warmer as well as I checked my phone.

Minako had texted me, telling me that she was at the gates.

"I have to go," I said as I pocketed my phone.

"That's okay. We'll catch up some other time. You still have my number, right?"

"Yeah."

"See you tomorrow, then!" She waved as she sprinted into the school, seemingly carefree.

It was good to see her again. At least I could get that weight off my chest.

Only to be replaced by another.

I pulled my headphones back on, drowning out the sounds of the world as I walked back.

In truth, I wasn't okay. At all. The past, as it seemed, was back to haunt me.

At least I was getting better at hiding it.

Time: Evening

POV: Akira Kurusu

I lay on the bed, thinking about what happened today. After we left the school, we'd gotten stuck in traffic. During that time, I was able to ask Sojiro why he took me in. He had said that he had agreed to do it when he was asked and that he had already been paid for it.

I then learned that a subway train had derailed, thus leading to the massive flow of traffic. But apparently, it hadn't been the only one. A large number of accidents had been happening lately. Whenever these happened, people were injured. In fact, the one happening today had involved eighty people. The subway driver had gone berserk, experiencing a mental shutdown before derailing the train.

A real sad one, as Sojiro had mentioned, was an accident that had taken place in Iwatodai on Tatsumi Port Island, about a month ago. A girl of age fifteen had died. It was honestly hard to believe that someone nearly my age could be killed that early. I couldn't help but feel sorry for her.

After we got back to the cafe, it was already night. Sojiro had then given me a probation diary and asked me to flip the sign to closed. I did as he asked, and headed back to bed.

Sighing, I looked over the route I needed to take, as well as more news about the subway accident.

"Sounds like a lot of people were hurt," I muttered to myself when I saw it again.

The app was back. "Well, time to delete it again."

I threw it back in the bin, making a mental note to reboot my phone later.

Closing my eyelids, I went to sleep.

I turned off the tap as I drank some water. The nightmares were still there. I'd woken up from one of them, prompting me to grab a drink.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get some sleep at this rate.

Koromaru padded up to the sofa where I was sitting, turning over for a tummy rub. "Hey boy," I murmured sleepily. "You can't sleep either?"

Koromaru whined.

Huh? For a moment, I saw something glinting under his paw. Lifting Koromaru's paw, I grabbed a small silver key and examined it. Nothing out of the ordinary about it. "Where did you get this?" I asked the dog.

Suddenly, Koromaru jumped up and started to run down the hall. Trying not to wake my uncle and aunt, I followed him to one of the doors in the hall. It was locked. He then yipped, motioning his leg towards the lock. "You want me to open it?" He nodded.

The key fit perfectly. Still having doubts within my mind, I opened the door, entering into a dimly lit room. To my shock, there were weapons in the room. Actual weapons. Eleven of them, to be exact. Each of them was different, ranging from swords to spears to axes to even a pair of leather boxing gloves. Who even brings boxing gloves to a battle?

There was even a bow. Inspecting it closer, it looked like it could inflict a lot more damage than the practice bow I had brought with me, which was currently in my room.

What were all of these weapons doing here? Did my aunt and uncle even know these were here? Or did they deliberately store them here? Turning to Koromaru, I asked, "Did you know these were here?" He nodded. "Then why did you decide to show me this?" He barked quietly, directing me to a box on a table in the middle of the room. It was the same box that my mum had asked me to deliver to my aunt. "You want me to open it?" I asked nervously. Again, he nodded.

"Alright." I approached the box, my nervousness slowly rising. What was in the box? Well, I was about to find out.

Lifting the lid, I instantly became intrigued, before the curiosity turned to surprise. Inside the box was a silver pistol, with the inscription S.E.E.S engraved on its side.

A gun? I thought. My mum wanted me to deliver a gun? Although, when I looked closer, it was just a model. I let out a small sigh of relief.

Koromaru cocked his head to the side as if he was waiting for me to do something.

"You want me to take it, don't you?" He nodded yet again. "*Sigh* Okay then." Gingerly, I pulled the gun out of the box and replaced the lid. Before I turned to leave, I noticed something else behind the box. It was a small action figure of a black-haired warrior, dressed in white samurai armour, a light blue scarf, and a brown cape. It was also holding a small silver-coloured spear.

Deciding to examine it later, I clutched the figurine in my right hand and held the gun in my left, as Koromaru and I left the room and locked the door.

Patting Koromaru on the head, I silently went back to my room, quickly dropped the key, figurine, and gun into a drawer in my desk, and collapsed into bed, sleep taking me as soon as I made contact, with questions still revolving in my mind.

Time: Morning

Location: Cafe Leblanc

POV: Akira Kurusu

I walked down the stairs, dressed in the Shujin Academy uniform. Today's the first day, I thought, so I better head out quickly.

A delicious smell began to waft in my direction as I entered the first floor.

Sojiro was behind the bar, with a steaming plate of curry and rice on the counter. "So, you're actually going to school, huh?" he stated. "Here, I'll feed you. Just make sure you finish it before the customers start coming in."

"Curry? This is my breakfast?" I exclaimed. "Don't complain. Just eat."

"Yes, sir." Sitting down, I quickly took a bite.

...!? I can taste complex flavors within the bold spiciness...this is good!

Within a few minutes, I had completely finished my plate. It was truly one of the best curries I had ever tasted. I almost felt like I couldn't stop eating it!

"Thanks for the meal," I said. "That was a really amazing curry."

"Heh, turns out you do have manners after all," he replied, smirking a little. "It's time for you to go. Hurry over to school. You'll end up late if you get lost on the way." I nodded, opening the door and heading outside, flipping the sign to Open.

I reached the station in record time, jumping into a subway car at the last second. Almost instantly, I was squashed against the wall, since the car was extremely crowded. It turns out that the rumors about the Tokyo subway are true.

Eventually, I reached Station Square, transferring over to the Ginza Line. Soon, I had reached the school district. It took some time, but I finally made it.

It was raining when I got out of the station, however. "How is there rain today?" I whispered to myself. "I don't have an umbrella...oh well." Covering myself with my bag, I ran to the nearest source of cover, a veranda on the front of a clothes store.

Shaking the rain out of my bag, I pulled out my phone to double-check my location. "What?" The app was back. Again. For the third time.

I really need to reboot my phone. Huh? My thoughts were interrupted by another person running under the cover of the store. Judging by her clothes, she was a girl. She stood next to me, drying off her hood before she pulled it off.

Wavy, platinum blonde hair in two bushy pigtails came billowing out of the hood, revealing the girl's face. She was tall, and her eyes were bright blue. Like me, she was also wearing the Shujin uniform but it was modified. The black blazer was over a white varsity-like full-zip hooded sweatshirt, and she also wore red tights and brown boots with yellow laces.

In other words, she was beautiful. Extremely beautiful.

I was so stunned by her appearance, that I almost didn't realise that I was staring until she turned her head to face me.

"Uh...are you new around here?" She asked. "Oh, sorry," I said, strangely flustered as I shook myself out of my daze. "Why yes, I am. You go to Shujin as well?"

"Yeah. I'm Ann Takamaki, by the way," she said, introducing herself with a slight smile. She seemed really friendly. I honestly couldn't recall the last time someone had spoken to me so kindly. Then again, she doesn't know who I am. "My name is Akira Kurusu. Nice to meet you."

She smiled and nodded, looking back to watch the sky. The two of us settled into a comfortable silence, gazing as the light refracted on the raindrops, creating a spectrum of bright colours. For the first time in months, I felt safe.

The feeling didn't last long, though. A white car pulled up in front of us, its side window opening to reveal a strong-looking man with black hair.

"Good morning. You want me to give you a ride to school?" He asked Ann. "You're gonna be late." "Um, sure. Thank you," she replied, her smile vanishing in an instant.

"Do you need a lift, too?" he asked me. "No, I'm good thanks." I quickly said. Shujin wasn't that far from here, anyway. Ann got in the car, but as the window rolled up, I noticed her eyes becoming sad and empty. Is she okay? I thought, concerned. The car sped away, just as a boy my age ran in front of me, letting out a small growl of frustration as he stopped.

His short spiky hair was blonde, and his eyes were dark brown. Like Ann and I, he wore the Shujin academy uniform, but it was also modified. He wore his blazer unbuttoned, revealing a yellow t-shirt with a comic-style star symbol and the word 'ZOMG!' His pants had black suspenders that hung down, and he wore white sneakers with a rising sun motif.

"Dammit," he panted, trying to catch his breath. "Screw that pervy teacher..."

"Pervy teacher?" I asked, absentmindedly as I played around with the app.

"What do you want?" The boy interrogated me as he gave me a glare. "You plannin' on rattin' me out to Kamoshida?"

Location: Sanada Apartment

POV: Hiroto Arisato

"Are you sure you don't need me to drive you to school?" Minako asked, "We're both going to the same place, after all."

"I'm 15 now, I can get around by myself. Besides, I think I'm going to need some time to get used to the city."

"Alright, then. Just remember to call me or your uncle if something goes wrong, okay?"

"Will do. See you there."

"Bye!"

Aunt Minako drove away, leaving me behind to run to the station, now in my Shujin first year uniform and black and neon-blue headphones around my neck.

It didn't take too long for me to reach the Aoyama district, since the trains were pretty fast. Unfortunately, the moment I stepped out of the station, I got caught by an unexpected rainstorm. Making a run for it, I dived into the cover of a nearby store. Sighing at myself for not bringing an umbrella, I opened my bag to examine the two 'stowaways' I had thrown into my bag on my way out.

My Jack Frost doll was there, along with the figurine I had snatched from the weapon room last night. Pulling out the figurine, I turned it around in my hand, getting a look at it from all angles. There was nothing particularly special about it that I could see, but there must have been a reason for it to be locked away with all those weapons. I made a mental note to ask about it later, before tossing it back in and giving Jack Frost a small pat on the head.

Why not? It's not like it's alive or anything.

Looking around curiously, I spotted two people over to my left, under the veranda of another store. It was the guy I had seen earlier, the one who burst into blue flames. He was talking to a tall, blonde, gorgeous-looking girl, who was in the same uniform as us. He was talking so casually to her.

Yeah, I probably don't stand a chance with girls like her. I thought, miserably. Every time back home, whenever I came across an attractive girl, I lost the ability to speak in complete sentences, and I had to get Kasumi and Sumire to drag me out of there because I was almost always frozen in place.

As I was wallowing in my own despair with my inability to talk to unfamiliar, pretty girls, the rain stopped. Then a white car stopped in front of them, the driver revealing himself to be the PE teacher I'd seen yesterday. He offered them a ride, and while the guy declined, the girl got in. Her expression turned out to be...regretful? No, she was miserable. I made two more mental notes: One, to figure out what was going on between her and the PE teacher, and two, to start taking more mental notes.

Then the blonde boy I played DDR against rushed past me, trying hard to catch up with the car, but he was too slow and stopped in front of the other guy as the car disappeared from view.

Silently, I snuck over to overhear a conversation between the two of them.

"What do you mean?" The black-haired guy asked.

"Huh? In the car just now. It was Kamoshida." the blonde guy stated.

Kamoshida? Well, we got a name at least.

A beep then sounded from one of their phones. "He does whatever the hell he wants. Who does he think he is, the king of a castle? Don't you agree?"

"Which castle?" the black-haired guy joked. "Uh, it's just a sayin..." A small silence fell before the boy said, "Wait. You don't know Kamoshida? Are you for real? You're from Shujin, right?"

"I'm a transfer."

"Huh, well that explains it. You're a second-year...we're in the same grade then. No wonder you don't know him."

"Come on, I know a shortcut to school. We better hurry up, or we'll be late."

They began to take a path down an alley when all of a sudden, my phone buzzed. I thought I was going to get caught, but then the black-haired guy's phone buzzed at the same time. A wave of nausea suddenly overcame me as reality seemed to warp for a second, forcing me to clutch my head in pain. I looked up to see the other two in a similar state. "Uuugh, my head hurts. Dammit...I wanna go home." I heard the blonde boy mutter as we all entered the alley, with me somehow still unnoticed.

Checking my phone, I realised that the strange app was back. And it was pulsing with a strange red light. Deciding to worry about it later, I followed them, exiting the alley.

To our shock, what should have been a school standing in front of us, was instead a giant castle. The sky had turned pink. The gate that was usually in front of the school was still there, but the entire school itself was replaced.

"We didn't come the wrong way, though." the blonde boy said. "What's goin' on here?"

"I have no idea." The black-haired guy replied.

"I guess we'll just have to go in and ask."

I've got a bad feeling about this, I thought as I followed them inside.

We entered into a grand central hall, complete with red curtains, a large golden chandelier, two staircases, and a portrait of someone I couldn't recognise.

"T-That's weird...where's the school?" The blonde boy stuttered. "Where are we? Did we take a wrong turn?" the black-haired guy asked. "N-No! This has to be it! I mean...it should be..." He pulled out his phone to check where we were, as I quickly hid behind a column. "Out of service?" he confirmed. "Where'd we end up?"

The gate was still there when we got here, so where's the school? It's not like a school could just disappear out of nowhere. There would be pandemonium. Then where are we?

"Wait, what is that?" I heard the black-haired boy exclaim.

To our disbelief, a grey, armoured knight stepped into the hall, holding a large sword and shield. Its face, however, was a blue face-covering mask. As it approached us, its armour rattled with every step.

"Geez, you freaked me out. Who're you? You a student?" The blonde boy went in closer to inspect the knight. "Man, your costume's impressive. Is that armour real?"

Out of nowhere, a second, identical knight walked into the room. "H-Hey, what's goin' on?"

"We should get out of here." the black-haired boy said. "I've got a feeling that this isn't a prank." The knights then began to surround the blonde boy.

"We've gotta run!"

"Got it."

The two of them quickly ran for the exit. I was about to follow them when two more knights blocked the entrance. "Ugh, what with these guys?" the blonde boy shouted when one of the knights slammed his shield into his back. "Gah! You're going to break my bones, dammit!"

Shoot, this isn't good! I thought, anxiously. I have to help them! Immediately, I tried to think up a plan.

The first thing I need to do is take out those knights. Unfortunately, I'm completely unarmed. Plus, I doubt I can punch through their armour, it looks pretty sturdy. Oh! What if I can grab one of their swords? That's definitely a weapon! I don't think I'm fast enough, though. There's also the fact that they're a lot larger than me. Wait, how about...Huh? Why is it suddenly so quiet?

I looked up, only to find the room completely empty. The knights must have already taken them somewhere.

"Oh, come on! I guess I overthought things again." Just then, I heard a clank behind me. Turning on the spot, I saw that the knight already had his sword raised.

"Well sh-" The pommel of the knight's sword struck me in the head. Pain burst through my mind as I collapsed to the ground. Just before I lost consciousness, I heard the knight ask someone, "Should I throw him in with the rest of the intruders?"

"Nah, put him in with the rebels. I'm sure they'll throw him a nice welcome party...and rip him to shreds."

The next chapter will have some action, I promise.
