When Sayid found out, he wasn't surprised. He almost felt pity for Nolan. Sayid had noticed how beautiful Kate was at first glance. It was only after that he found so many more reasons to cherish her and their friendship. She was his closest female friend but more importantly she was one of the closest friends he had. He had always considered her smart, kind, brave and strong. But once Kate called him, he suddenly realized how vulnerable she really was.

It started innocently enough; Nolan was one of the reporters sent to cover the Oceanic Six story. Whatever assumptions Nolan had made about them, he had underestimated how beautiful Kate was. When Nolan did an exclusive interview with the five of them, his attention and questions were pointed directly at Kate. As the interview wrapped up, Sayid overheard Nolan ask Kate on a date. She politely told him she had just gotten home and needed to readjust. He didn't notice the way she kept glancing in Jack's direction but Sayid did. After being rejected, Nolan offered Kate a one on one interview which she declined, also. And Sayid hadn't given it another thought.

"Sayid?" Kate's voice sounded so quiet it caught Sayid off guard. "I'm sorry to call you. I just ... I need help..."

"You can always call me, Kate. What is it?"

"Do you remember that interviewer who asked me more questions than anyone else?"

"The one who asked you on a date?" Sayid sounded slightly amused at the idea.

"If I give you his name, can you do research on him?"

"Kate," Sayid said, his tone turning stern. "What happened?"

"It's nothing..."

"Kate."

Kate sighed into the phone. "I've just been seeing him everywhere. I go for jogs with Aaron in his stroller and he's at the park. I go to the grocery store and there he is. He's asked me out at least three times..."

"What does Jack say?"

"We haven't talked since my trial, actually," she admitted. He could feel the hurt in her voice at the words. He had always assumed she'd end up with Jack. Everyone assumed she'd end up with Jack.

"Who else knows about this?"

"Just me."

"Kate, I will take care of this. But I need a name."

"Nolan Anderson," she practically whispered. "Sayid? Thank you."

"I will always be here for you, Kate."

When they both hung up, each one stared at Jack's name in their contacts. Sayid knew he should call Jack. If it had been Shannon, he would want Jack to call him. Still, he knew Kate didn't trust easily and he couldn't stomach the idea of betraying her trust. Kate knew in any other scenario she would run directly to Jack. But since her trial when he didn't want to see Aaron, they hadn't had any contact. She missed him but if Jack couldn't be around Aaron, he couldn't be around her. They were a package deal now.

Three days later, Jack pulled up in the abandoned parking lot. Sayid hadn't given much information over the phone, except to meet him.

"It's good to see you, Jack." Sayid's thick accent brought a strange sense of nostalgia from their island days.

"I take it you didn't send me here in the middle of the night to catch up," the doctor smiled.

"This is a courtesy meeting," Sayid started. "Kate came to me in search of information on a man who's been stalking her."

"What? Why didn't Kate come to me if something was wrong?"

"I don't know but she came to me. And, Jack, this man has a long rap sheet. Stapling, domestic abuse, battery."

"Where is Kate now?" Jack's voice raised in panic.

"That's what I'm here to tell you." Sayid stepped back, opening the side door of his van. On the floor lay Kate, unconscious and handcuffed to the bar above the window.

"What happened?"

"Relax, she is fine. Just asleep. We sedated her—"

"And the handcuffs?" Jack demanded.

"So she doesn't wake up and attack the driver."

"Where's Aaron?"

Sayid pointed to the row of seats behind Kate, where Aaron slept soundly in his car seat. "Kate is in no danger. I would never hurt her. In fact, I'm protecting her until..."

"Until what?"

"Until the problem is solved." Jack didn't need any other questions; he knew what Sayid meant. "I'm telling you this as a courtesy. She didn't want you to know but I fear Kate is in more danger than she realizes. Would you like to come with us and..."

"Yes!" Jack practically yelled as he jumped into the van. He sat on the ground next to Kate and stroked her face and hair as the van drove away.
