A Kind of Blessing
"Now remember, love, what does seeing a white rabbit mean?" Her mother asked, a few days before Luna's life changed, but she didn't know it at the time.
"It means luck is coming our way." Luna scanned the field before them as she hoped to see one. "They also symbolize love and inner power."
"When you see one, remember that it means I love you." Young Luna hadn't been able to pick up on the pain in her mother's eyes, but adult Luna wished she had.
"I'll remember." Luna hugged her mother, "I'll always remember."
At her mother's funeral, Luna spotted one of the white rabbits her mother always spoke about. She knew it was her mother sending her love from the grave, but Luna hated the poor creature for it. The image of the white rabbit was tainted for her. How could it symbolize luck when her mother was dead? Luna felt that it was unfair that her mother had been taken so suddenly from her. She couldn't have inner power or strength when she felt powerless to the fate of the world. Just the other day her mother had been able to hug her tightly and now she'd never feel her mother's embrace again.
The rabbit stared at her from across the field. Its fur a stark white against the dying grass, a reminder that the world was in mourning as well, since winter was upon them. Only Persephone would be able to reunite with her mother at the change of the season, and Luna would never see hers again.
She walked over to the rabbit, once the funeral had ended. It never moved from its spot which Luna found to be weird. Shouldn't the rabbit have run from her by now?
"Why are you here?" She asked the rabbit even though she knew it couldn't respond. "Mum's dead and I don't want your luck because it'll never bring her back."
The white rabbit's eyes never left hers as they sat in the field together. She didn't say anything after her first statement, it was pointless to try.
Luna didn't stay cynical for long, it wasn't in her nature to, the world was full of whimsical things that she wanted to explore. She focused on magical creatures to distract herself from the real ones. White rabbits still populated her back yard, a sad reminder that her mother was gone. She still remembered what her mother said to her about the rabbits being a message for her. Maybe it's why her Patronus took on the image of a hare. A reminder that her mother was always with her even in her darkest moments.
It built up her inner power even though she thought she lost it all on that fateful day. She could tell the rabbit that visited her at her mother's funeral was different from the rest of them. Luna hadn't seen that rabbit again, maybe because that rabbit was now with her wherever she went. Her luck never left no matter how much she wanted it to. Even though her mother would never come back she saw her mother in things around her, and that was good enough for Luna.
