A/N: The Wych Elm crossover, part 2.

Once again, Rob is at Toby Hennessy's hospital bedside. This time, Hennessy isn't the victim, he's the murderer. The evidence says he beat Rafferty to death, then took a massive overdose. He left a message for his ex-girlfriend before passing out though, so he can't have been too serious about suicide.

A few of Rob's colleagues have been making threatening noises about what they'll do when Toby wakes up — he killed one of their own, after all — but Rob can't say he feels that strongly about it. Rafferty was a shit, always calling Rob "Adam" and dropping hints that he was lucky to still be in the Gardai at all. After O'Kelly had retired Rob had hoped that he might be allowed back into Murder eventually, but with guys like Rafferty around that was never going to happen.

Toby doesn't look like a deranged cop-killer, he looks utterly pathetic. Judging by his injuries, Rob can easily believe that Rafferty's death was self-defence. Rafferty was the kind of guy who would beat up an invalid suspect for fun and then arrest him for assault on a cop. Rob wants to offer Toby some words of comfort, to tell him that one day this will just be something that happened. The guy deserves a break after all he's been through.

One of the uniformed Guards has arrived to take over Toby watch. Rob leaves them alone in the ward, but continues to keep watch from outside the door, just in case.
