In the tunnel, Flynn led the way, moving as quickly as possible to get as far away from the ones chasing them. While making their way, Flynn decided to try to make conversation.
"So, Blondie, you surprised me back there. Didn't think you had it in you to handle those guys at the pub."
"I know, right?" Rapunzel responded. "Kinda surprised me, too. But, now I want to know more about you. Where are you from, Flynn?"
"Oh, no. We aren't talking about me," Flynn responded. "Or Eugene." he added quickly before Rapunzel could ask the question. "Besides, you're much more interesting. Where did that all come from anyway? What's your story? If you want to see those lanterns so much, why haven't you gone before now?"
"Well, uh," Rapunzel stammered.
Before she could come up with a plausible reason, without divulging her issues with her mother, there was a noise, what sounded like a lot of rocks and dirt tumbling down.
"Uh, Flynn? Eugene? What was that?" Rapunzel asked. Even as she voiced the question, she could hear the sound of people approaching, even hearing a horse neighing in the background.
Flynn cursed silently to himself. So much for getting away from all of these people, Eugene.
I know. What are we gonna do now? Eugene asked.
The only thing I can come up with is to just keep going till we get to the end of the tunnel. There should be a clearing we can get through to help us get away.
Ok. What do you need me to do, Flynn?
Just help me keep the girls away from the guards. The last thing we need is for the guards to realize we have Arabelle with us.
She's pretty well disguised. Her hair is all dirty and she is wearing servants' clothes. I don't think they will notice her unless she starts talking. We better hurry though, sounds like the guards are catching up with us. Let's get out of here.
With that, they continued to hurry the group along. Soon they exited the tunnel into a large canyon with a water tower off to the side, and another couple of tunnel entrances across the way. No sooner had they reached the middle of the clearing, than the Stabbingtons burst into the clearing.
"Who's that?" Rapunzel asked.
"Uh, they don't like me." Flynn responded.
The guards were the next to burst through one of the other tunnel openings into the clearing.
"And who's that?" Rapunzel asked again.
"Um, they don't like me either," Flynn answered.
"Oh," Rapunzel said, right as Max, the captain of the guard's horse, burst into the clearing.
"Who's THAT?" Rapunzel asked a third time, overwhelmed with all the people surrounding them.
Flynn shrugged his shoulders before answering.
"Blondie, let's just assume for the moment that everyone here doesn't like me. We need to get over to the other side so we can enter the other tunnel."
Before they could move, the group of guards came forward, the front guard drawing his sword in anticipation.
"I have waited a long time for this, Rider." The guard said, grinning at Flynn. As the guard advanced, Flynn grabbed the nearest item to fend him off. Realizing only after he swung it at the guard that it was a cast iron frying pan. Swinging wildly, he was able to fend off the guard's attack. As the other guards joined in, Flynn continued to swing the frying pan around, knocking guards unconscious as they attacked him.
While he was fighting with the guards, Eugene had led the girls closer to the center of the canyon. Looking around, Rapunzel had an idea. Looping her hair, she threw it over and around a wooden support of a bridge on the other side of the canyon.
"Grab on, Eugene. Once you get to the other side, Arabelle can swing over. Then once Flynn gets away, I can swing us both over."
"Be careful, Rapunzel."
Rapunzel nodded. "Ready?" she asked.
"Ready," Eugene responded, grabbing the hair Rapunzel offered up and swinging himself over to the other side, just a few feet short of the next tunnel entrance.
"Your turn, Arabelle."
Arabelle grabbed the hair, much the same way Eugene had, and swung herself over as well, landing a few feet away from Eugene.
"Flynn, hurry up," Eugene shouted. "We have to go."
Flynn looked up from his sword fight with the palace horse. He had come to a stalemate and the horse was herding him off the edge. Rapunzel once again looped her hair and tossed it to Flynn.
"Grab on, I will swing you down."
Before Flynn could swing over, there was a loud crash as the water tower collapsed. At the noise, the guards and the Stabbingtons took off, racing to get out of the tunnels and canyon before they were trapped in the rushing water. Flynn jumped and landed right outside the tunnel, Rapunzel following suit. Eugene led the way this time, straight into the nearest tunnel. Realizing that Rapunzel was having trouble getting her hair out of the way, he went back and helped her gather it.
They had just gotten the rest of the hair into the tunnel with them, when a large rock fell and covered the entire opening of the tunnel, locking them in darkness.
"Great, now what?" Eugene asked bitterly.
"We will find a way out, Eugene." Flynn answered. "We have to."
Soon they realized that not only was it completely dark, but the water level in the tunnel was rising fast. After searching as best as they could with no light source and realizing that the air pocket they had above the water was almost gone, Eugene was the first to speak up.
"It's no use, I can't see anything. It's too dark."
"Hey, Flynn," Rapunzel called, still having trouble telling them apart.
"Oh, I'm Eugene, That's Flynn over there." Eugene answered. "In fact, my real name is Eugene Fitzherbert. Thought you should know, before we die."
"And my real name is Flynn Fitzherbert." Flynn stated, quickly adding, "But we're not going to die."
"Yeah and I feel like everyone has forgotten about me, since my sister disappeared all those years ago, I'm just an inconvenience, the forgotten princess."
"Oh, um, since we're sharing secrets. I have magic hair that glows when I sing." Rapunzel commented.
"Magic hair?" Eugene echoed.
"Yeah, magic hair. I can't believe I didn't think of this before." Rapunzel began singing really fast, but quietly, almost to herself.
"Flower, gleam and glow.
Let your power shine.
Make the clock reverse.
Bring back what once was mine.
Heal what has been hurt.
Change the Fates' design.
Save what has been lost.
Bring back what once was mine.
What once was mine."
