Kit's hand was warm and firm in mine as we sat in the waiting room at the doctor's office. We had gone through a questioning process about our health history and our families, had a ton of blood taken from me, and now we were waiting for a confirming ultrasound before we would see our actual doctor.
"You thirsty?" Kit asked, gesturing towards a water cooler by the door. I smiled and shook my head. He had been the perfect boyfriend and father-to-be ever since we found out. He made sure I drank enough water during the day, made me cut off my coffee drinking (so maybe he wasn't so perfect), held my hair whenever I got sick while he was around, and got up with Zeus during the night for "potty trips".
Whenever I woke up, his hand was always on my stomach even though I didn't have a bump yet. We had decided to wait until we confirmed the pregnancy today to tell everyone. We were inviting everyone over for a late cookout to tell them. His family, Brad, Elise and Harlan, Randy, Ashlynn, Buck, and Sam.
I wanted to tell them individually so I would be able to prepare for bad reactions but Kit protested. He thought I was crazy to think we'd get bad reactions. "My parents are going to be thrilled, Soph. My mom will probably start crying and hugging us both. Expect some cracks and jokes from my brothers. It's just really down to your brother. How he'll react."
"Sophie?" A young nurse stood at the door with a file in her hand. Kit and I both stood up, walking over to her. "Hi, I'm Janine, your ultrasound tech. Right this way, please."
She guided us to a room with a monitor up in a corner, a huge desk-type with a few monitors next to a bed. "There's a gown on the bed, if you'll go ahead and change, I'll be back in a minute."
She left and I changed into the gown and sat on the bed with the provided sheet over my legs. A few minutes later, a knock came at the door. "Are you good?" Janine asked and I answered her. "If you'll just lay back and pull up your gown to right under your breasts, we can get started."
I did as she asked and she warned me that the jelly she was about to put on me could be cold. It was. I tried not to gasp when it hit me and somehow managed not to. Kit chuckled from his spot right beside me.
"Is this your first?" I looked over at Kit and smiled at the question.
"Yes, this is our first child." Kit answered, squeezing my hand gently. She smiled over at us.
"If you just look up at that screen in front of you, in a minute we'll see your baby." Her words sent a feeling of thrill through me. The screen lit up and there was suddenly a black screen and silver circle on the screen.
I heard Kit take a deep breath while my breathing stopped. On the screen, was a little vague shape that somehow resembled a jellybean. Our baby. My heart flooded with happiness and love. I loved this baby already so much, just seeing them on the screen and hearing the beat of our baby's heart was absolutely indescribable.
I turned towards Kit as he lifted my hand he was holding and pressed it to his lips. I could see his emotions overtaking him too. "That's our baby, Soph."
I nodded, unable to speak through the emotions. He kissed my forehead. Janine talked us through the ultrasound as she took pictures and measured the baby. "So we thought you were ten weeks because of your last period but it looks like you're about eight weeks along. The baby is measuring beautifully, and the heartbeat is strong. That's good. I'll get you a few pictures to take home with you."
After meeting our doctor, we left the doctor's office in a silence filled bliss. It wasn't a bad silence, just so…happy. I tried not to clutch too tightly to the ultrasound pictures. I didn't want to ruin them. Kit gently squeezed my leg and smiled the whole way home.
"I still don't think this cookout is a good idea." I fretted as we entered the house. I had officially moved into Kit's place last week since the house had been sold. Brad was not so keen on the idea and I couldn't imagine how he'd feel when he found out about the pregnancy.
"Soph, it'll be fine." Kit pulled me into his arms. "And if it's not fine, who cares? Whoever isn't happy will come around. We're having a baby, Sophie. That's all that matters."
….
I sat on the deck watching our friends and family talking as Kit sat down the plate of burgers and hot dogs. I made a light plate, feeling nauseous. Maxine and Elise sat next to me and I watched as Maxine fawned over Harlan. It made me a little less nervous seeing her love on my nephew.
Kit tapped my shoulder from the other side of me and I'm sure the panic showed in my eyes. He wanted to tell everyone now? "If we could have everyone's attention, we have an announcement we'd like to make."
All eyes turned to us immediately and I felt my heart beat faster. "Are you engaged?" Maxine asked excitedly and Kit chuckled.
"Not yet, Ma, not yet."
I could feel Brad's eyes burning into my face as he stared. Kit placed his arm around me supportively. "We'd like to announce that in March of next year, we'll be welcoming a new member into our family—a two legged one."
Silence followed his announcement. Stunned faces stared back at us. Harlan played with his toy truck, oblivious to what was going on.
"That's great!" Maxine broke the silence and jumped us to hug us both. "My first grandbaby!"
Luke was next, shaking Kit's hand and hugging me gently. Ashlynn and Buck voiced their congratulations. The jokes came from Kit's brothers, one being "Damn, somebody's been hitting the sheets!" to which his parents shushed them.
Brad's chair loudly scraped as he got up and left. Tears filled my eyes and Elise hugged me. "Congratulations. I'm so happy for you." She whispered in my ear. "Don't worry about Brad—let me go talk to him, okay?"
"Okay." I whispered sitting down next to Harlan and Maxine. Quinn took the seat beside me.
He gently grabbed my arm, pulling me towards me. "You weren't...you weren't pregnant when we were boxing were you?" Worry shone in his eyes. "I didn't hurt the baby or anything, right?"
I smiled at his concern and asked Kit for his wallet. Both Kit and Quinn looked at me, confused. I pulled out the ultrasound picture Kit had put in his wallet and handed it to Quinn. "No, you didn't. I was just newly pregnant then. This is your niece or nephew." Quinn held the picture gently and Maxine, along with Luke, crowded closely to see the picture.
"Where's the baby?" Quinn asked with a chuckle. I laughed before pointing out the tiny blip of our baby.
"I'm only eight weeks so the baby is really small right now."
"It's like a little jellybean." Quinn said and he passed the picture to Maxine so she could see better.
"A jellybean, yes." Kit smiled and gently touched my stomach. Soon enough, the picture was being passed around by everyone and Kit and I were having to point out the baby. I looked up when I saw Elise walk back onto the deck—without Brad.
"He wants to talk to you out front." Elise told me. "He's calm." Elise assured Kit, who had stiffened.
I walked out, leaving the party, to talk to my brother. He sat on the front porch staring out at the road. I sat down beside him and he looked over at me. "I'm sorry I walked out like that."
I shrugged as if it didn't bother me. "It's okay. It's very surprising, I'm sure."
Brad nodded and sighed. "It definitely is. It was just such a shock…" He ran a hand through his hair. "You and Kit just got together and with everything with Steve…I'm just worried about you, Sophie."
I leaned my head against his shoulder. "And I love you for that. I'm worried about Steve too. But Kit and I? I'm not worried about that. Kit's a great guy and he's so excited. He's been helping me look for a place of my own—even though he wants us living together—and he's been really supportive ever since we found out."
"He is a good guy…I don't doubt that. I just worry about you." Brad audibly swallowed. "So how far along are you?"
"I'm early yet—only eight weeks. It's all very new."
"I'm happy for you, Sophie. I am. It's just going to take some adjusting."
"I know." I understood. As long as he was willing to come around about the baby.
Later that night, I helped Kit load the dishwasher. Only his parents remained. His brothers had left, one by one, Ashlynn and Buck had left together, they were heading into town. Sam left with Jake and Brad and Elise had taken Harlan home since it was getting towards his bedtime.
"So…" Maxine started, glancing towards Luke. "We were just wondering if you two were thinking about the long-term plan."
"Long-term plan?" Kit asked, with his arm around me. I leaned into his warmth.
"Well like, are you two going to live together permanently, where will you be living?" Maxine said softly. "I mean at some point Kit, Bobby is going to be coming back and want his house back. Do you two plan on renting a home together with the baby?"
"Well of course we'll live together." Kit shrugged, and I shot a shocked glance up at him. He frowned at me. "Why are you giving me that look?"
"Well, I mean, I just think we need to take it day by day. What if something happens before March?"
Kit now pulled back a little. "Soph, why are you so hellbent on that we aren't gonna work?"
"I'm not…I just…everything's happening so fast." I pushed the button for the dishwasher to start to avoid Kit's gaze. "I mean don't you ever worry about that?"
"No." Kit said softly, and it was like his parents weren't standing a few feet away from us. "I don't worry about that because I know I love you, Soph, and you're carrying my baby. I have no doubt we'll still be fine come March."
Luke cleared his throat and we both looked at him. "Just take this time to get to know each other more. You have a baby on the way so you'll be forever connected by them."
Once everything was cleaned up, his parents headed out. His mother was beaming, chatting his father up as they left together.
"Mom's over the moon." Kit observed with a chuckle. "I don't think anything else could make her happier."
A familiar ache throbbed inside of me. I wish my mom and grandmother would be around to be happy about my pregnancy. I was glad to have Brad and Elise—happy that Kit's family was happy. But sometimes I really missed not having my parents and my grandma around.
The one good thing I knew though? This baby would never lack family.
…..
Monday, September 23rd
I stocked the shelves robotically. My mind wasn't focused on the task at all—but since it didn't require much thinking, it didn't matter.
All I could think about was Kit and I's argument. About us, about his feeling like I didn't have faith in us and our relationship.
"I just want to feel like you want to be here, with me. That you want a future with me." He had said last night to me and I could see the hurt in his eyes. "You always talk about the future in a way that's like you're talking about something that might happen. I just want to know—are you in this with me?"
Are you in this with me? I thought about his question. Of course I was in this with him—I was pregnant with his baby!
But if I was truthful with myself, I knew that's not what he meant. He had told me he loved me, and though he had said he understood I wasn't ready, I think it made him unsure.
That, paired with the fact that I balked at the idea of us buying a home together. He was ready for it all—if I'd agree. He would buy the house together, even propose. He was that sure.
And it's not that I didn't like Kit—truth be told, I was crazy about him. Especially with the more time I spent with him. I knew part of him understood my hesitancy after everything with Steve, but he still felt as if I was only in this halfway.
I knew Kit loved me. I could tell how he felt and I felt it every day—with his words, his actions.
So what was holding me back? Besides everything with Steve?
After my shift ended, I went to Elise's. She was off today and I needed her advice.
"Elise?" I called out after knocking on her door. I stepped into her foyer and hung my purse on her coat rack.
"We're in the living room!" She called back and I walked in to see her on the floor with Harlan. He was playing with his new set of toys—the ones that Kit had bought him. It was a barn with farm animals and tractors. Just another reason to love Kit, he loved hanging out with Harlan and Elise and even Brad—who had come around to the idea of becoming an uncle and was so excited. Kit bought Harlan gifts, things he knew Harlan would love.
Elise looked up at me. "Did I miss a text or something?"
I shook my head. "No, I just decided to come over." I sat beside her on the floor. Harlan looked up at me excitedly and threw his arms out towards me. I hugged him to me tightly. I listened as Harlan told me—in toddler talk—about his cows and horses and the tractor.
"Something wrong?" Elise asked as Harlan got distracted by Mickey Mouse on the TV. I shrugged.
"Kit and I had an argument last night." I admitted with a sigh. "It's bothering me."
Elise's face showed sympathy. "What was it about?"
"About pretty much that he's all in and he's concerned that I'm not in this with him, that he's worried I don't see a future with him." I put a hand on my stomach. My bump wasn't visible yet but getting there.
"Do you see a future with him?" Elise questioned, point blank.
"I…" I stopped to think—when I let go of my insecurities, my worries, I did. Everyday I got a glimpse into the future we could have. Kit waking up early to get ready to head over to Three Ponies. He tried to be quiet in the mornings since I didn't have to be up quite yet. Zeus would follow him outside to use the potty and then Kit would get dressed in the dark, quietly closing drawers. Sometimes I'd feel his lips press against my forehead as he kissed me goodbye without waking me up. I'd find a pot of coffee brewed with a note about enjoying my one cup of coffee I was allowed per my doctors.
In the evenings when he got home, he'd kiss me and give Zeus's ears a rub before heading to grab a shower. We'd eat dinner together, talking about our days with Zeus watching us eat, wanting us to share.
Kit would load the dishwasher before we'd take Zeus on a walk through the neighborhood. When we got back, we'd snuggle on the couch together, skimming through Netflix before settling on whatever show or movie we decided to watch.
He'd let Zeus out once more before bed and we'd lay in bed, his hand on my small but growing bump. He'd tell me he loves me before falling asleep.
On the nights that I'd work the evening shift, he'd bring me food and visit with me at work. He'd be waiting for me when I got home and relax with me for a while before we headed to bed.
The more I learned about him, the more I liked him. We shared a lot of the same beliefs and values.
"Honestly, he's exactly the kind of guy that I never knew I wanted." I confessed. "He's the laid back to my anxious self and he's got this calm about him, he just handles anything life throws his way so easily and he's so sweet. He cares so much about me and I adore him."
Elise smiled. "So then what's the problem? The Steve thing? I can tell you that Kit's no Steve. He really cares for you and he's so excited about the baby. He wants to be involved in all the aspects of your life—not isolate you."
I shook my head. "I don't know, besides that. There's something…"
"Is it the time? That you're afraid it's too fast and you're afraid to just accept that it happens?" Elise offered and I thought about her words.
We had only been together for about four months. Was that holding me back? "Maybe." I shrugged before sighing. "Actually more like yes. I mean—it's only been four months, what if—"
"Sophie." Elise cut me off while giving me a look. "Time is irrelevant. You said yourself that he's exactly what you wanted and you adore him. It took you forever to warm up like this to Steve—and shouldn't that say something? You said you loved him but there was always something off. You never would have moved in with Steve, but yet you did, with Kit. You're halfway to building a life with him. I mean really you are building a life with him." She gestured towards my stomach, talking about the baby. "You're afraid to let yourself fully fall for Kit, because of what happened with Steve. You don't want to admit what you already know—that you love Kit. You see a future with him but won't let yourself admit it, won't let yourself want that future because you're afraid. Let yourself fall, let yourself see that future. Give yourself to happiness. Let it happen."
Elise looked down at Harlan and then back at me. "I wish I had done the same for myself two years ago—because if I hadn't been afraid and overwhelmed two years ago, I'd have two more years of happiness with Brad."
After I left Elise's, her words played over and over in my head. That's when I found myself pulling into a parking spot at the office of a local realtor.
….
"And you just bring me back that information, then we'll get started on getting you both pre-approved and looking at houses, okay?" I nodded and shook Carrie's hand before leaving.
When I got back to Kit's house, his truck was in the driveway. Zeus came running to the door once I opened it and I slid my hand over his big ears. "Hey sweet boy." I kissed his head—he was getting tall. Too tall.
"Soph, is that you?" Kit called out, walking out of the hallway. His hair was wet and he wore a pair of sweats with a t-shirt. He must have just showered. "Hey, you weren't home when I got here. I didn't know if you got held up at the store or not—I thought we could just order a pizza or something. Unless there's something else you want."
"Pizza sounds good." I answered, hanging up my bag.
"Pepperoni, peppers, and extra cheese?" Kit asked, grabbing his phone. I smiled and nodded. He knew what I liked so well.
"Yes, please."
I watched as he walked away to order the food and went into the living room. The couch felt good to sit on and I sighed as I laid back in the cushions. Kit came in and sat down beside me. "In thirty to forty minutes, we will be in pizza heaven." He rubbed my leg. "You look tired."
I gave him a lopsided smile. "I'm always tired these days."
Kit chuckled. "True. Let me help you out of these." He reached down to untie and slide off my shoes.
"Can you do me a favor?" I requested, looking at him.
He nodded. "What do you need?"
"Can you grab the folder out of my bag? There's something I need to show you." Kit went and grabbed the folder before coming back to the couch. I slid the list out of the folder and handed it to him.
"Paystubs, tax returns, copy of photo id…" Kit read off the list and his eyebrows furrowed. "What is this?"
"It's what Carrie down at Long and Foster said she needs to get the pre-approval started for us so we can start looking at houses." I said, watching his face.
Kit turned to me with a look of surprise. "You—you want to get a house together?"
I couldn't help the grin that overtook my face. "I do. I was just…scared. But I'm following some good advice and letting my worries go. So yes, let's buy a house together. Because we're having a baby, because you love me and I love you."
Kit pulled me into his arms and kissed me. "I love you, Soph."
"I love you too, Kit. So while we're waiting on the pizza, I thought we could talk about our wants in a house."
…
Two weeks later, we were approved for up to two hundred thousand dollars. That was a decent amount around here, Carrie had said when she called us to let us know. It turned out that Kit's credit wasn't as bad as he thought it was so we were able to combine everything.
Kit and I started our list about our wants for a house.
My list went: three to four bedrooms, decent sized kitchen, patio or deck—or room to add one, yard for Zeus to run in.
Kit's list was similar: four bedrooms, nice sized living room and kitchen, he wanted acreage—not too much he told me but enough that he could move his horses to our place, maybe have a few more or some cattle.
We both wanted it to be nearby as we both worked locally and Kit really wanted it to be near Three Ponies.
Carrie called us the next day after we sent her our lists and said she had a few properties in mind and did we have time to go today?
So here we were driving towards the last place. We had looked at the two others and they were nice. The one was closer to my job—but farther from Three Ponies. The other was past Three Ponies, closer to Darton, but would still work.
I thought about the last house, what Carrie had told me. It was local, adjacent to Three Ponies land, had thirty five acres, four bedrooms, it was open concept, a recently remodeled farmhouse she told us.
Kit turned into the driveway and I took a breath as I saw the place. There was already a barn to the left and fenced pastures right behind. Straight ahead, there was a big 2-story white farmhouse. I loved it on sight.
It had a big (half) wrap around porch, stone steps and double doors in the front. The double doors had four pane windows in them and were light brown. The porch had fans on it and looked like a beautiful place to sit, enjoy the evenings over looking the little farm.
"Nice arena and round pen." Kit nodded to his right, past the house where there was an arena with an attached round pen. "Good place to work when you're training horses."
"I'll take your word, since you're the horse guy." I smiled at him. I gasped and pointed towards one of the trees as Kit parked. "Is that a tire swing? Oh that is so cute!"
Kit smiled and came around to open my door for me. "It is. I can imagine our kids swinging on it."
"Tell me—your first impression!" Carrie said excitedly as she came up to greet us.
"I really like it. The house looks huge and I love the porch. It has the stuff for the farm but also there's space for kids or dogs to run around. Oh God, I have to mention the porch again because that looks like exactly the place to sit in the summer evenings, sipping lemonade."
Carrie laughed. "Almost my exact thoughts, Sophie! And Kit, they even have cattle sorting equipment that they're willing to leave behind. The ones where you herd the cattle into a chute for their shots or something?" She smiled at him. "I'm not very knowledgeable with ranch equipment having lived in town my whole life."
"Thanks, Carrie. I think I know what you mean." Kit returned her smile before putting his arm around me. "Let's take a look inside."
"There's two entrances here on the front—well front and side, really. The double front doors," Carrie gestured towards them. "And the side door there, that leads to the mudroom."
As we stood on the porch, Carrie looked at me. "Do you want to go in the front or the mudroom first?"
"Let's do the front first." I said and Carrie opened the doors for us. "Oh." I whispered as I stared into the very open home. Carrie had it right—it was open concept for sure. I could see through the living room straight through to the kitchen. Exposed wooden beams lined the tall ceilings and there was a fireplace—a wood burning one—to the right with a beautiful wood mantel. Hardwood floors—true hardwood—laid beneath our feet.
The living room seemed cozy with it's two love seats, the couch and one recliner making a little circle or U-shape. Windows on both sides of the living room gave beautiful views of the surrounding land. The dining area held a decent sized table and would hold the big one that we would need if we hosted our families and friends here.
The kitchen had a big, beautiful island in the middle with a breakfast bar right by the dining area. A gleaming stovetop was against the back wall with the oven—ovens?!—to right where the microwave was, on their own. Glass fronted cabinets were placed above and below the stove, giving plenty of storage space for dishes. The fridge was to the left and was stainless steel.
I could see the sink was against the left wall, centered in the middle of the counter, underneath a window, where I'm sure there was a view of the barn and pastures. To my immediate left, were the stairs to the second story.
"Breathe, Soph." Kit chuckled as he rubbed my back.
"It's amazing." I said softly as I moved more into the house. I could see Kit and I cuddled up on a couch with a fire crackling in the fireplace, Zeus laying in front of it. Or us hosting a family dinner in the dining area, food covering the big kitchen island.
"The house was originally built in the early 1900s, these are the original hardwood floors, refinished when they remodeled the house. All new appliances in the kitchen, including, as you can see, double ovens. With your big family, Kit, I imagine that would come in handy for holiday dinners." Carrie gave a laugh.
"Yes, Ma'am." Kit nodded and glanced up. "I love these exposed wood beams and how open it is. You could be in the kitchen and have a conversation easily with someone in the living room or vice versa. Views of the pastures and the surrounding land. Could see the kids playing in the front yard or running down to the barn to their ponies."
I smiled at Kit's painting of the future and our additional kids. The way he thought of having a family here.
"Let's see the rest, shall we?" Carrie suggested, leading the way into the kitchen. She pointed out the mudroom that held a built-in bench with a coat rack and shoe cubbies below the bench. The washer and dryer were also in the mudroom with a table to fold clothes that folded down when not in use.
"Convenient." I said as she showed us how it worked. There was also a small half bath off the mudroom, which would be useful. No running upstairs to use the restroom. That was especially important when you were pregnant and had to pee often. Next we went into the kitchen. I loved all the storage space between the cabinets and drawers, the big fridge and the double ovens. I nearly gasped when Carrie slid open a door past the ovens that led into a small pantry.
"This will allow you to stay stocked up on food and have storage if you decide to garden, store your jars and such in here." She motioned towards the many shelves. "As you can see, the current homeowners do a lot of their own gardening to get their vegetables."
We moved onto the upstairs and it was carpeted. The first bedroom we looked at was decent sized and had a small closet. It would make a good kids bedroom. The others were similar and I smiled, touching my stomach as I thought about decorating a nurse, rocking a baby to sleep in one of these rooms. There was a full bath with a shower/bath combo and it was decently sized.
"And the best for last…" Carrie smiled as she opened the door to the master bedroom. It was larger than the others and had more windows, lighting up the room. It had what had maybe once been a fire place, but no longer was, on the same wall as the entrance door. The brick had been painted white and it was closed up with a little mantel on top holding the TV. "Over here is your own bathroom—so you wouldn't have to share with guests or any children you have."
I started towards the bathroom when I noticed the French doors and gasped. "Is there a balcony here?"
Carrie turned and nodded, still smiling. "Yes, a tiny one. Let's take a look." She opened the doors and there was a tiny—like she said—balcony that held a bistro table and two chairs. It overlooked the barn and pastures.
"Couldn't you just imagine standing out here in the mornings with a cup of a coffee as the sun rises and it's all misty and magical?" I murmured to Kit as we stood together on the balcony.
"With you, I could." He whispered in my ear. I kissed his cheek and he rubbed my back.
We went back in, looking at the bathroom. It held a stand alone shower and a tub that I could see myself soaking in after a long day at work. A double vanity so we'd both have our own counter space—not that Kit or I really had much stuff besides the basics, but it would be nice.
"And now onto the outside." Carrie led the way. The barn held twelve stalls, a tack room and a hay loft up top. It was clean and nicely designed, from what I could tell. Kit really liked the round pen where he could work horses and the small outdoor arena to ride in. The pastures were all wood fences and newly updated, which made Kit happy.
Carrie pointed out a big building that held farm equipment and had a workshop within. We walked back to the house and sat on the porch, taking another glance around the property.
"So—now that you've seen everything, what are your thoughts?" Carrie asked, leaning against one of the porch posts.
I glanced at Kit and then back at Carrie. "I don't know about Kit, but I'm in love. Completely."
Kit smiled and put his hand on my shoulder. "I really like the property. I feel like it hits all our wants. I could see us living here."
"Can we afford it though? I mean with the acreage and the updates? It seems like it would be expensive." I looked over at Carrie, nervous about her answer.
Carrie smiled brightly at me. "Comes in under budget at a hundred and ninety thousand. I wouldn't show you a house you couldn't afford, though some realtors do. I don't like to crush dreams, I like to help them come to life."
We glanced at each other and I saw in his eyes that we were on the same page. "We want to make an offer." We said in unison.
Two days later, our offer was accepted.
