Hello Everyone!
I am so sorry for how long I've been away. It has been a crazy couple of years. My world was falling a part even before the pandemic started. but I am happy to say that I'm back and better than ever. I was encouraged to continued writing after watching Legend of Korra on Netflix for a while. Hopefully it will stay there for a bit right! And I know that there are some writers on this platform and others that hate when people continuously complain about not seeing regular chapters or updates, but I am NOT one of those people. I work faster and better when I know there are people out there that would be just a little happier if my content is out there to read. So please feel free to spam me in the review section for more chapters because more often than not that will get them out faster. I am still planning on doing two more books after this one, so while I was gone for a while, I will never stop writing! But without further adieu, Chapter 12!
Emi rubbed her temples as she felt a sleep deprived headache coming on. She, Lin, Su, Aiwei, Korra, and Mako had been in the same room for hours upon hours talking to all of Su's guards. Every single one of them wasn't lying about any of the questions that Aiwei threw at them… but that wasn't only coming from Aiwei. Even if the rest of the people in the room were only counting on what Aiwei said to be true, Emi knew that every one of these people were telling the truth. Kuvira had told the truth, the scheduling supervisor had told the truth, the heads of every guard group had told the truth. They were wasting their time, and it was starting to get on her nerves.
What made it unbearable was when they brought Varrick in for questioning.
"What was I doing last night?" Varrick asked with his goofy smile as he sat in the chair across the table from Aiwei with Zhu Li standing behind him. "Same thing I always do. From 9 to 10 I checked my body for ticks. Lyme disease is a serious killer. Then I did my nightly Varrick calisthenics," Varrick actually got up from his chair to demonstrate, "Followed by 30 minutes of breath holding. I filmed the whole thing if you want to watch it."
"That won't be necessary," Aiwei huffed as Varrick and Zhu Li finally headed out of the room. Emi gave her own huff, and switched her leaning leg which made her armor clang together. It actually felt nice to be in her uniform again. The Zaofu robes were comfortable, sure, but her Republic City armor felt like home.
"Maybe it wasn't a guard afterall," Lin said, and Emi wasn't surprised to hear how mad she was. "Maybe it was someone a little higher up the food chain. Aiwei, why don't you question Su?"
"Lin, stop," Korra told the Chief of Police, "Your sister wasn't involved."
"No, I'll gladly be questioned," Su said as she walked around the table, and sat in the chair that so many people before her had sat in. "I have nothing to hide."
Aiwei hesitated for a minute before questioning the matriarch.
"What is your full name?"
"Suyin Beifong," Su answered with no hesitation whatsoever, "I'm the daughter of Toph and the only sister to Lin, and I had nothing to do with the attack last night."
"She's telling the truth," Both Aiwei and Emi said at the same time. Korra gave a frustrated growl before turning to Lin.
"This is a waste of time," Korra voiced the thought that had been drifting in Emi's head since they started the interrogation. "Just bring in the next guard."
As the next guard walked into the room, Emi turned to her girlfriend. "What was that about?" She whispered, "Why are you suspicious of Su?"
"Better to be safe than sorry," Lin shrugged. "I just wanted to make sure. Su was a part of the Terra Triad once, let me remind you. I was just doing a good check."
"Fair enough," Emi said as the young man sat down across from them.
"Give me your name, and tell me where you are from," Aiwei told the boy, who looked unsure with the amount of eyes on him.
"I'm Hong Lee," He said, "I was born and raised here in Zaofu."
"Do you have any knowledge of the people who tried to kidnap the Avatar?"
"No," the boy said, but his voice slipped slightly. Emi saw Aiwei lean with a suspicious glare, but Emi didn't know why. He didn't answer the question with confidence because he was nervous. His heartbeat was even. He wasn't lying.
"Did you help the attackers enter Zaofu last night?" Aiwei continued his questions.
"No, of course not," Hong Lee said truthfully, again.
"You're lying," Aiwei told him, and Emi narrowed her eyes at the supposed Truth-Seer. He was lying. Aiwei's heart was beating so fast that Emi was surprised that the rest of the people in the room couldn't feel it.
"He's lying," Emi whispered just loud enough for Korra and Lin to hear it. They both turned in surprise to her as she vaguely pointed at Aiwei's turned back.
"What!" Hong Lee exclaimed in surprise. "No, I'm not!"
"He's telling the truth," Emi whispered again as Su advanced on the boy.
"How did they get in and out?" Su shouted at him before grabbing his collar and slamming him against the wall. "Where are they now?"
"I don't know," the boy pleaded. "I'm telling you, I didn't help them."
"You're a traitor to the entire clan," Su continued to yell in his face before Emi forcefully released Su's grip on his shirt.
"Suyin! Relax!" Emi exclaimed as she put herself in between the fuming matriarch, and the clearly terrified boy.
"You're telling me to relax?!" Su asked with rage.
"I suggest we search his place," Aiwei said, and Emi gave him her full glare. He raised an eyebrow in response, but it just made her even more angry. She wished more than anything that she could expose him, but she needed evidence for that. She would have to be patient.
I'm going to get you for this, Emi promised him, I'm going to make you regret the day that you thought betraying the people that trust you was a good idea.
