Ty's headphones were clamped firmly over his ears as they walked under the brightly lit archway of the crazy golf center. He had said to Dru that he would go purely because of the excited look in Kit's eyes and the fact that after yesterday he didn't want to have Kit out of sight for a while. Not that he didn't trust the other boy, he was a competent shadowhunter after all, but he didn't know what he would do if Kit was hurt again and he wasn't there to help him.

As they stepped out onto the green, Ty looked to Kit and watched his eyes light up with a kind of childlike joy that helped Ty's nerves to calm just a little. There were a couple of courses to choose from, including a safari one Ty had liked, yet somehow they had ended up choosing the monsters and myths course. Ty had tried to tell them that they saw 'monsters' every day so maybe they should try a different one, but the rest of his friends were not having it unfortunately. So here Ty was staring at a very unconvincing werewolf dummy which held a bag filled with clubs and balls. The course swept up the hills from there, brightly coloured and very, very plastic but duly empty of people seemingly.

Ty found himself a golf club quietly, passing it from hand to hand and feeling the slight weight of the cool metal before joining his friends at the first hole. Dru was bent over slightly, whispering to her friends Thais and Tomas from the academy, the latter of whom had been hastily introduced as they had walked to the golf center. They looked up occasionally and had rather large smiles on their faces making Ty wonder what they were talking about… maybe it was about the horrible werewolf dummy? Magnus and Alec were stood hand in hand talking to Tavvy about how he was doing at school and how Rafe always asked to come and visit him. Kit was stood alone, head upturned and gazing into the sun bleached sky and Ty found himself wondering what Kit was thinking about.

'Okay, we are going to do pairs so everyone pick a partner and then go get a ball each' Dru turned with a piece of paper and a pencil in hand.

Ty looked at her then and realised how grown up she was becoming and how much she looked like his mother then, taking charge but with a gentle smile. Ty wondered what his mother would think of their family now and whether she would even recognise them. He hoped that his mom and dad were both safe with the angel now.

'Care to be my Sherlock?' Kit had apparently come over to him and was currently stood in a mock bow grinning at him and raising one brow

Ty smiled 'of course Watson'

It was easy to joke with Kit about nostalgia and the like but it was beginning to become harder to be just his friend, especially considering how he was currently looking at Ty with that child-like joy once again.

'Come on, let's go choose the good coloured balls before everyone else gets the best ones!' Kit shouted, having righted himself and began, what Ty could only describe as skipping, back towards the ball pickup.

Once everyone had found their pairs and their equipment, they met back at the start of the first hole waiting for Dru -who seemed to have put herself in charge- to tell them what was going on.

'Okay so I've taken the liberty of giving you all team names and your team must work together to win. I'll obviously be keeping score and watching out for any cheaters!' she eyed Tavvy

'What is it with you and team names Drusilla?' Kit said teasingly

'Oh shhh, it makes it more fun anyway! Now team names are as follows: Magnus and Alec you are team Daddies'

Ty looked to Kit who had wide eyes and seemed to be choking back a laugh. He would have to ask why later.

Not having noticed Kit's struggle, Dru kept going 'Thais and Tavvy you will be team sunshine, me and Tomas are team the best ones and Kit and Ty' she levelled her gaze at Kit directly then 'you are team Kitty. Okay thank you everybody take your places' the last part shouted at speed as she turned to find Tomas

Kit meanwhile seemed to be choking once more for some reason, perhaps the laughing from earlier had made him lose his breath a little?

'Are you okay Kit?' he questioned

'Oh uh yeah, just breathed funny or something I guess but I'm fine thank you'

'Okay, but why were you laughing at Magnus and Alec's team name, they are dads, it's factual, or did I miss something?'

Kits cheeks suddenly became beet red 'oh, well, how do i explain this… so the internet uh, yeah, on social media people sometimes used daddy in a like kinky or sexual way to refer to a hot man'

'Oh, okay but these people, do they have to be a father figure?' Ty asked genuinely intrigued yet also slightly confused

'No, just kind of like older and hot I think… it's a bit weird really'

'Okay, so maybe you could call Jem a daddy?' he cocked his head slightly waiting for an answer as the music in his headphones crescendoed

Kit choked on air once more 'Ty he's my dad' he managed to squeak out, then after a moments consideration 'but I guess so yeah'

'Okay thank you, now come on Watson the game is afoot' He turned back to the others and Ty could only follow.

It turned out that Kit was terrible at crazy golf, a fact they'd discovered after around 3 holes and a very unfortunate duck incident. Kit hated ducks and Ty almost wondered whether he had let the ball fly wide and nearly took the duck out on purpose as some kind of revenge.

'Kit you're supposed to be good at this… you grew up a mundane for angel's sake!' Dru seemed astounded

'It's not exactly like my father and I went on family bonding trips all too often, plus that duck had it coming, it was looking at me funny!'

So Ty was right and perhaps even on both counts. Kit left his side and strode abruptly up to Dru who was scribbling his score on her card. He immediately missed the calming feeling that standing in Kit's proximity had given him and reached up to play with his necklace in the other boy's absence.

'I know I said to play bad Kit, but not quite so bad that you're nearly injuring the wildlife!' Dru pouted at him, but he knew there was humour behind it

'Okay but Dru not even I could pull of quite such a compelling performance… turns out I am actually this bad at crazy golf' Kit admitted

'Oh wow, okay, well it works beautifully for phase one of Kitty nip though'

'I still don't like that'

'I still dont careeee!' she sing songed 'now go ask my poor, oblivious brother for some help okay' Dru gave him a gentle push on the back, sending him back in Ty's direction.

Shortly after he head left, Kit returned though now looking slightly anxious. Ty hoped Dru hadn't been teasing Kit about his skills or lack thereof but, then again, Dru wasn't the teasing type. Ty wondered what it was they were discussing then.

They arrived at the next hole and were presented with a board titling this hole 'phoenix rising' and a rather garish looking phoenix statue whose feathers created a sort of curtain rendering the players unable to see the second half of the course. It was just as ridiculous as the rest of the decor, but Ty was starting to see the entertainment in it, the making fun of the things that were hell bent on killing them usually.

Ty and kit were to go first, having gotten the worst score on the hole before. Ty saw Kit glance briefly at his sister who simply raised an eyebrow at him and smiled gently. Slowly, Ty moved up to the tee and placed his ball down, focussing on where he wanted it to go and bringing the club back and tapping the ball across the green. The bright blue ball skipped along its path and disappeared behind the screen with ease. He turned to Kit and smiled, proud of his achievement only to see Kit looking terribly anxious.

'Would you like me to help you?' Ty asked, knowing it wouldn't help him quiet his own feelings but also aware that he couldn't stand to see Kit feel bad or sad in any way.

Kit seemed surprised 'uh, yeah sure' his eyes met Ty's for just a moment before Ty couldn't help but look away for the intensity of the gaze boring into him

Ty moved slowly so that he was facing Kit and began explaining 'okay stand how you would normally and I'll tell you what you need to improve'

Without hesitation, Kit did as he was told and Ty let his eyes run over the other boys form and stature. He knew he was meant to be looking at what to improve, but he couldn't help staring at the way Kit looked in the deep burgundy shirt and how his skin had picked up a slight tan once more now back in LA.

'You need to bend your legs a bit more and hold your arms away from your body' Ty was impressed that his voice remained even and clear.

Kit did as instructed, though he didn't seem to be able to get his arms in quite the right position.

'Not quite, you need to bend your wrist a little more' Ty tried to explain once more

'Why don't you come and show me' Kit met his gaze once more with a heavy intensity

In that moment, Ty felt as if they were the only two people there, like they were in their own little bubble and that time had stopped for a breath of a second. He was definitely in too deep here as Livvy would say. Mechanically, he moved into Kit's space and began positioning his hand and arms correctly, every place his fingers brushed feeling like a pinprick of electricity.

'Okay, now swing back and hit it, making sure to follow through' Ty managed to crack out, stepping out of the way. Kit did as he was told and the ball -set free- now went in the right direction. It wasn't a brilliant putt but it was much improved upon considering the prior foray with the duck. Everyone erupted in a cheer shouting varieties of congratulations and exasperated "finally" but Ty focussed on his hands which he placed into his jeans pockets as to hide the butterflies that were beginning.

As they moved to the final hole, Magnus and Alec were smiling at eachother, holding hands and whispering about something between them. Ty found himself slightly jealous of what they had, the ease of being out in public together and knowing their other half definitely loved them. It must be nice, Ty thought. The final hole, it seemed, was titled dracula's castle and, as described, in front of them stood a rather large brick castle with a full sized dracula animatron. The vampire in question was wearing a large black cape and one arm kept moving to cover the bottom half of its face with it while a speaker played a few phrases over again, including Ty's least favourite "i want to suck your blood".

'Whoa look at that, it's so cool!' Tavvy said excitedly 'I wish real vampires looked like that. Silla take my picture with it will you? I want to show Max and Rafe they'll love it'

'Me too, its hilarious' Kit shouted bouncing on the balls of his feet, the childlikeness having returned once more

The rest of the game had concluded without much of a hitch, Ty's advice clearly having taken its effect on Kit's gameplay. Magnus and Alec had ended up winning and hearing Dru announce team daddies, now with added context, was quite the moment of unfortunate hilarity in Ty's opinion. The group were now stood around outside chatting between themselves and deciding what to do next when Magnus -as he usually did- appeared next to Ty.

'So I've been looking into the binding spell Tibruis and it seems our literature runs short of detail but a little faerie told me that Isaac Laquedem has made an appearance in town... so get excited because it looks like you've won an all expenses paid trip to the shadow market of Los Angeles!'

Ty didint know how this made him feel, after all, they were getting closer to saving him from the toll of the necromancy, yet, he was ever closer to having to say goodbye to his twin forever and that was a pain he wouldn't be able to bear twice.

'Hey Ty, come look at this cool beetle Thais found!'

He looked up to see Kit smiling brightly at him from where he was stood with everyone and couldn't help but smile back.

'I'm coming' he said

But he wasn't alone this time Ty realised.

They had had to wait a few hours until the sun had set, but now Magnus, Kit and himself were striding down Kendall Alley with a renewed purpose. Once they arrived at the lamppost which marked the entrance to the market, the gatekeeper appeared almost from thin air.

'Rook's boy! We were all wondering what had happened to you -well those of us that don't hate your guts of course- you've gotten so tall.' the phouka said excitedly and Ty was taken aback at the rather broad New York accent he spoke with 'oh, and Magnus Lightwood-Bane a pleasure to make your acquaintance once more!'

'The pleasure is all mine,'' Magnus swooped into a quick bow 'now may we enter?'

'Ehh well technically I'm not supposed to let these two in… or you really but how could I say no?' he said stepping aside and letting them pass

Once they had stepped through the gate, Ty was assaulted with the heady smell of cardamom spice and amber and the clamour of voices that rose above the music in his headphones. Everything was brightly coloured in shades of blues, pinks and oranges and traders were hawking their wares atop each other. The anxiety was beginning to rise out of him already, thrumming against his chest. Ty had been here a few times before, but it seemed louder than usual tonight, perhaps because of the new resident warlock or perhaps some form of show was going on? Either way, Ty didnt like how it made him feel.

Magnus guided them through the thick crowds with a graceful ease, Kit and Ty having to hurry to stay with him. Ty was finding it hard to keep up with either boy as the crowds got thicker and the panic found its way through his skin. That was when Kit grabbed his hand and started leading him through the winding pathways after Magnus. If his heart hadn't already been beating at a million miles a minute, he was sure it would have then. Ty didnt mind touch from the people he knew but he often had to be initiating it or at least be told what was happening first but with Kit it was different, everything was different, and he found that he didn't care that the other boy hadn't asked permission first. Why had Kit held his hand? Ty told himself that it was so that Ty didnt get lost and slow them down and since Kit knew the shadow market here so well… that was the logical explanation after all.

Soon, they had reached the back of the market where a ring of newer looking tents and caravans had been set up, ones Ty didn't remember from last time.

'Its this one' Magnus said, pointing to a large red velvet tent lined in fur

'How do you know?' Kit asked

'Laquedem is very fond of fur… also there's a sign right there' Magnus gestured to a hastily constructed wooden sign explaining each of the new stalls' trades.

Mangus walked up to the tent with a well practiced confidence and he and Kit were helpless but to follow. Once they entered the tent, the noise seemed to dissipate almost completely, so much so, that Ty was able to take his headphones off and let them lay against his neck. The room was lined with shelves upon shelves of different oddities and objects, some that even Ty didn't quite recognise. At the end of the room was a large gnarled wooden desk where a man sat quietly flicking through some sort of magazine or glossy book. He looked up as they moved closer.

'Magnus Bane' he said in a voice that sounded like a time gone by 'est-ce que je peux vous aider mon frère?'

'I am looking to break a necromantic bond and I'm told you might be able to help' Magnus replied in English, probably for Kit and Ty, even though Ty already knew French himself and was fairly sure Kit knew enough to get by too.

'Ahh well, what would I get in return for it?' the man asked

The first thing Ty had noticed when they had entered the tent were a pair of spectacular antlers that sat atop Isaac's head which must have been his warlock mark, but, now they were stood closer he could see just how large and aged they were.

'I thought you may say that, which is why I brought you this' Magnus held a hand out and in it appeared a pile of new looking comic books.

The warlock's eyes widened and he leant forward.

'They are the newest 10 in your favourite series, all first editions and they're yours if you share what you know'

'On a un accord!' the man said springing from his chair with a surprising sprightliness considering how top heavy he looked.

'Wonderful, may we?' Magnus said pointing to the chairs in front of them.

Isaac nodded once slowly, while taking the comics and stowing them in a drawer on his desk. 'So what do you need to know about necromancy, young one?'

How old was this man to call Magnus Lightwood-Bane young? Magnus had said something about him being ancient but he wondered by just how much. He tried to wrack his brain for notable warlocks but it seemed to come up short.

'My friends here' Mangus gestured to Ty and Kit 'decided to attempt to raise someone from the dead. However, their catalyst was given to them by an unreputable source and was corrupt'

'Interessant' isaac moved a hand to twirl his moustache and it made Ty think of a villain from one of the spy movies Kit and Dru had made him watch once.

'Yes, rather so. Anyway, the soul returned but only partially and as a ghost but it seems that the spirit world still wish to collect their debt, only it seems to have effected the caster too'

'Quoi, comment?'

'I get injured sometimes and they don't heal with iratzes' Ty cut in, having followed along with the conversation 'the ghost, my twin sister, seemed fine at first but then she started getting volatile and would leave the room screaming. I have it all recorded in a notebook if you'd like to see it?'

'No, that is quite alright, I believe I know what is wrong and perhaps how to fix it. You see, as my brother said, the spirit world won't give up a soul without another in return, though because your sister isn't fully returned to our world and you are intrinsically linked to her, they are trying to take you both. I believe the wounds that have been inflicted on the ghost in life may be developing on your body also as retribution from the spirits.' The warlock had now switched to English as to address the whole room and Ty was glad that Kit would be able to follow along now too.

Ty wasn't too surprised by this news as he had theorised a similar thing, but to hear someone else say it too was a lot to take in. 'How can we fix it?' Ty asked, not really wanting to know the answer.

'You must perform the ritual once more with the same ingredients as to bring her back'

Tys eyes lit up at this, that is, until he heard the next words.

'Then you must inflict the same mortal wound upon her with the same weapon or method, you have to kill her with the weapon she first died with' he looked at them sadly 'the literature states: To unburden and untether oneself to the spirit thou must give them up to the dead once more'

Ty turned white and thought he may throw up, the world spinning off kilter below his feet.

'I'm sorry my child it is the only way'

'Ty' someone said but Ty was already standing and walking out into the crowds of the shadow market, intent on disappearing for a while.

Thank you so much for reading i hope you enjoyed this chapter as much as i loved writing it. Please feel free to comment or drop a kudos, i love reading each of your sweet comments, it really makes my day. Ive finished chain of iron and wow… just wow. I aso made a shadowhunter family tree if anyone fancies checking it out on my tumblr (queenofthesydrianites) as it literally took so long and it has a dire lack of recognition.

Dictionary of terms

The french is basically: how can i help you brother, you have a deal, what how?

Also as a bilingual person i know this isn't accurate as i have openly yelled at my friends for not looking at the "abeille, abeille!" before realising they are english and very confused but i can't remember the word for bee sorry what you expect me to think?!
