Sam and I where completely scared out of our wits. Dan took us home, and explained to our parents about the creature. I sat in my room, trying to calm myself down. I could still hear the snarling of the wolf and the see the imagery of it's yellow eyes and sharp fangs. I couldn't really sleep that night. Later my parents came in, "So I heard from Dan that there is a werewolf somewhere near the lake."
"Yeah, and it almost got us! Me and Sam." I said traumatized and still trying to pull myself together. "Well, I heard that Dan's taking you and Sam trick-or-treating tomorrow. Maybe that will cheer you up!" Dad said.
"Yeah!" I replied, getting comfy as I fluffed my pillow. Dad said good night, and when he left, I pulled out my phone and slowly got up, and walked downstairs towards the window. I had a perfect view of the lake, I looked around and noticed a few trees and nothing else. All I wanted to do was capture a photo of the wolf, but it was rather hidden, or somewhere near the shoreline. I decided to wait until tomorrow to try and capture the thing.
In the middle of the night, I was woken up by the sound of a eerie howl. I looked around and then heard it again. I got up and looked out the window. It was pretty dark, hard to see. So I grabbed my binoculars and looked around, only to find nothing. I shrugged it off and went back to bed.
The next morning, I walked downstairs to grab some cereal. I rubbed my eyes and walked towards the window in the dining room and couldn't believe what I saw. "Raw meat?" I said confusingly.
I walked outside and noticed a whole trail of fresh steak meat. I decided to follow the trail. It seemed to lead right into the forest. I was completely freaked out. When I turned my back, I noticed scratch marks on the door. "That ain't no dog!" I said, as I started to exam the marks. "These claw marks are from some animal!"
I decided to walk over to Sam's house and talk with him. Maybe he knew what the marks where.
I knocked and waited. Nobody answered. I knocked again. No one answered, I put my ear against the door, to see if I can hear any footsteps are any signs that Sam was awake. But there was nothing. I left to Dan's house. I walked up and rang his doorbell, he answered. "Hello, Derek!" he said, holding a cup of coffee. "Hi" I said, "Do you know where Sam is?"
"No I don't, sorry." Dan replied, taking a sip of coffee, "He probably went to the store."
"Ok." I said, leaving back home. I went inside and ran to the backdoor, the meat was still there. I picked up a few pieces and ran back inside to show my parents.
"Dad!" I yelled. "Yeah, son" He yelled back.
"I found fresh steak meat in the backyard." I yelled at him. Dad walked in and saw. "Hm. Well throw it away, it's covered in dirt." He said. It was really weird to find this. Maybe someone was camping and dropped these on accident. I took them to the trash, their is were I spotted Sam. He was riding his bike. "Sup, Sam." I said.
"Sup, Derek." he replied, as he gave me a high five. "You excited for Halloween tonight?"
Sam nodded. "I'm get so much candy, that I'll be out a school for the next few days!" I laughed, as we both walked to my house. I walked inside and looked for my costume. I looked in my room and found the costume. A wolf. I walked to the bathroom and put it on, I wanted to scare Sam so bad. After putting it on, I peeked around the hallway corner and saw him sitting on the couch talking to my mom. "Double scares!" I whispered, before lunging out with my furry arms in the air. Sam flew back and mom dropped the gum pack she was holding as she shrieked. I laughed uncontrollably. "I wish I had recorded your reactions!" I said laughing hysterically.
"Dude." Said Sam. "That scared me so bad. You got your mom too."
I almost forgot to ask. "Hey, Sam. Did you by chance leave a trail of raw steak meat last night?"
Sam was confused. "No. Why?" I walked into the kitchen and came back holding a dirt covered steak meat. "Cause I found this." I showed him the raw dirt covered meat. Sam shook his head. We were both confused. "Maybe the wolf did it!" Sam whispered to me.
A shiver ran up my spine. I walked outside and threw it out in the garbage, and walked back in.
Later, me and Sam were throwing a football around. As I caught the ball and was about to throw it back to Sam he turned to look at Mr. Creek's house. He was outside watering his grass and flowers. He peered up and waved, with a normal face. "Morning, Derek. Sam." He yelled to us.
"Morning, Mr. Creek!" Sam yelled back waving. We both continued to throw the ball around. "So, what do you think of my Halloween costume?" I asked him. He caught the ball. "Um, well... If I were you I would be careful about wearing it tonight." he said
"Why?" I asked in confusion. "Because..." he replied. He didn't seem to get into much detail, then he added. "Because, of the wolf that guards the lake."
Chapter 3
I asked him about more detail and history about it. He told me that the lake was normal, everybody went there for a nice swim during the summer. Until one night... Somebody reported a wolf near the lake, so people stayed away from the lake, and they never bothered to go swimming in it.
But the people who lived on the other side had no problem. They continued to enjoy their summer and swim everyday. So now, some people have to drive to the other side to go for a swim.
Later that night I heard a knock on the door. It was my friend Sam, he was wearing a sailor's costume, and had a map in one hand and a spyglass and his Halloween bucket in the other. "You ready to go?" Sam asked excitedly.
Definitely. I slipped on my wolf mask and growled and snarled at him. "Dude, your costume is awesome." he said. "Where did you get it?"
"My grandma made it for me. She knows how to sew a lot of stuff." I said, as I grabbed my bucket. We headed out across to Dan's house, and waited for him. A few kids came up to the house. One kid dressed up as a zombie doctor, another dressed as a zombie conductor, and one that was dressed up as a tiger.
The kid dressed as a zombie doctor took one look at me and gasped, grasping his pail tightly with both of his hands. He backed up slowly, whimpering. What's with that kid? He sped across the road passing my house, and going to the neighbors. The other three kids looked confused. "What's up with him?" I asked.
"He doesn't like wolves." The zombie conductor replied. "Dude, your costume is sick! So realistic." the kid in the tiger costume commented. He knocked on the door, and it opened. We all gasped in shock.
Chapter 4
Dan walked out with a knife in his chest, a bit of blood gushed out with some scattered around his white polo shirt. He reached out. "Help! Help! I've been stabbed." he cried. Some of the kids backed up, but not me. Sam cried. "Somebody call nine-one-one."
Dan began to laugh as he pulled the fake knife out of his chest. It was one of those fake knives that when you press down on the blade it goes in. It's made out of plastic. Sam started to chuckle, so did some of the other kids. "Another one?" Sam said.
"Yeah. Every year I always prank the kids." Dan laughed. "And they fall for it everytime."
Sam started to speak. He told how last year he pranked the kids by giving them beetle's and bugs. Which turned out to be made of plastic and rubber. Then the year previously he fooled everyone by giving out candy eyeballs.
Dan I guess was a trickster. He walked in to place the fake knife on the table and grabbed a bowl of candy and his coat. He sat the dish of candy which was in a dog bowl and sat on a bench next to a pumpkin and a sign that read "Take 2."
But for us, Dan allowed us to take three. Full sized candy bars. Snickers and kit-kats and peanut butter cups. He slipped on his coat as we walked across the street. I rang the doorbell. A tall woman with blond hair answered, she dumped a couple of candies into our bags and then yelled something as we left. "Be safe, don't go near the lake and eat all that candy."
Sam chuckled. "We won't!" He yelled back to the woman. We walked across the wet grass and into the next yard. The front porch was covered with cobwebs and fake spiders. As I stepped onto the porch, something lunged at me and made me jump back.
Chapter 5
It was one of those animatronic lunging spiders. Sam laughed as he walked up to the door and knocked. A teen with black hair answered. "How many pieces?" he said in a lazy tone. "Two would do." I told him. The kid reached in the orange Halloween pale and picked up four bars and dumped two into my bucket, and two into Sam's. "Thank you." I said.
"Anytime. Be safe!" The teen said, closing the door. We made our way down the wet grass back onto the sidewalk. We walked across the street and into the next yard, the lights were off. The only thing that was flickering was a jack o' lantern. I rang the doorbell and waited. Nothing. I rang the bell again. Still nothing. The third rang, I placed my ear against the door. I heard footsteps. "Okay. Hold on!" I heard a man say.
The door opened. A tall man with shrubby brown hair, wearing a bath robe answered, it looked like he was sleeping. Me and Sam held out our buckets and said. "Trick or treat!"
"Oh." the guy groaned. He reached over and pulled out a small bowl, that had candy in it. "Take one, please." he said. Me and Sam reached in and grabbed our one piece. I picked up a smartie. While Sam snatched a pixie stick. "Thank you." we both said. The guy groaned as he waved and said. "Have a safe night. Stay away from the lake."
Chapter 6
After hitting a few more houses, we walked back to my house. Me and Sam were both filled to the rim with full sized candy bars and lollipops, a few pieces of bubble gum and nerds. We were totally gonna be up all night. Sam and Dan waved bye as they left back to there houses. I walked inside and took the bucket of candy to my room.
I took off my wolf mask and slid off my costume. It was so hot in that thing. Maybe I shouldn't have worn my long sleeve shirt.
I was about to rip open a kit-kat until my mom came in. "Have a good time?" she said. I nodded as I went to peel the wrapper back, but mom snatched it out of my hand. "Wait until tomorrow. You have your first day of school, get to bed." she said.
I slipped in bed. My mom gave me a kiss good night. I got up to grab that kit-kat, but she had taken my candy with her. I sighed as I slammed back down and fell asleep.
Chapter 7
I woke up in my room. It was absolutely quiet. Then I heard a howl. It sounded really close. Then another eerie howl echoed through the house. Then I heard snarling. I was absolutely scared, I held the covers up against my nose, shaking. Suddenly my door slammed straight open and in came the furry wolf creature.
It walked up and hoped on my bed. The wolf smacked it's lips and growled at me. I tried to escape, but it was hard. Sweat slipped down my face. "Ooh." I moaned. Suddenly it barked at me and went to bite my arm.
Chapter 8
I shot up in bed covered in sweat, I looked around my room. It looked the same. I heard the tree's blow in the wind. I sighed in relief. As I went to lay back down, something almost made me fall out of bed. A Wolf howl. It sounded like it was coming out the backyard. I got up and tip-toed down the hall, downstairs. I snuck into the kitchen and walked to the backdoor.
I couldn't see anything, so I flipped the porch light on. I didn't see anything. I heard another howl. I thought of walking outside and investigating, but I didn't wanna get caught by our neighbors. I walked to the kitchen and opened a drawer and pulled out a flashlight, then walked back to the backdoor. I quietly unlocked it and slid it open.
A cool breeze hit my face. I turned on the flashlight and shined it around my backyard. Nothing. I heard the leaves on the tree's swish in the wind. As I turned to go back in, something nearly made me drop my flashlight.
Chapter 9
A howl. My face went blank, I stood motionless where I was. My heart pounded fast. I gulped as I turned back around outside. Another howl. I shined my light around. "Who's there?" I stuttered. Again, nothing. I quickly stepped inside and as quietly as I could, I closed the back door and locked it. I switched the flashlight off, then quietly put the flashlight back in the drawer, then walked back upstairs.
The next day, I was awaken by my dad. "Derek! Come down here!" He sounded angry.
I carefully got up and slipped my slippers on, walking downstairs. I turned into the kitchen and gasped. The kitchen. It was a mess. The fridge was opened. Cups shattered on the floor. And watermelon juice and bits scattered all over the floor. There was orange juice and eggs.
I looked up at my dad, who was standing holding a cup of coffee in one hand, and a mop and broom in the other. I got confused. "Dad, I didn't do it! I never make messes like this. You know I'm always clean and tidy."
Dad groaned as he rubbed his eyes. "Did you come down here last night and accidentally make a mess." I had no words. I just stared at the mess. "I... I... I don't recall!" I managed to say.
"It's ok. Just clean it up! And hurry. Then get ready for school." Dad sighed as he handed me a mop. He placed the broom against the counter and left. It was so weird. When I went down here last night the kitchen was just fine, now it's a total mess.
I started to mop up the egg and orange juice while thinking to myself. Who could've done this?
Chapter 10
After cleaning up. I dumped all of the remaining watermelon pieces in the trash, as I walked past our basement, I heard a howl. A small one, a quiet one. I froze.
