Remember Me
Chapter Nine: Wanting Answers

Dean finished packing his belongings in his duffel when the memories of his life with Lisa and Ben came flooding in his mind. Seeing them weighed heavy on his heart and the pain was unbearable. He had went through many things in his lifetime, but this took the cake. He had lost Ben and Lisa once before, he wasn't sure he could do it again but he knew it was the right thing to do. Sam thought very differently. He believed in fate and he was believing in that very moment that fate was bringing them together. He believed deep down that it wasn't some strange coincidence because when has anything in their lives been some strange coincidence? He believed it was fate. He believed Dean and Lisa were soulmates. He even believed that Dean was Ben's biological father, but never dared bring it up to him. He tried convincing Dean to go back to the Braeden's and explain to them everything that had happened. To tell them the truth. Dean, of course, was stubborn and just wanted to move on with his life. He believed by pulling away from Lisa and Ben that they wouldn't get hurt, but they were hurting themselves by trying to find out answers that no one but Dean could give them.
Dean sighed with a heaviness in his heart as he zipped his bag up. Sam looked at his older brother soulfully as tears brimmed Dean's eyes.
"Dean." Sam said with a gentle voice. Dean quickly wiped the tears away and looked at his younger brother.
"What?"
"You're only hurting them and yourself more by not fixing this."
Dean chuckled at Sam's naivete. "You really think telling them the truth is going to fix anything? Sammy, it's just going to make things worse."
"You don't know that, Dean!"
"Yes, I do Sam!" Dean shot back. "Everybody I love gets hurt or worse, killed. I can't do that to them. Do you know what that would do to me if I heard they were killed because of me?" Dean shook his head as he grabbed his duffel. He exited the room, slamming the door behind him. Sam sighed heavily as a fluttering sound emerged from behind him.
"Dean doesn't realize it will cause more harm than good not telling them." Castiel spoke. Sam turned to face the angel.
"I know, but I don't know what else to do." Sam said, feeling defeated.
"There is a way for them to remember everything." Castiel said, gently pushing passed Sam to look out the window. Dean was leaning against his car staring intently at his phone. Castiel turned back to face Sam who had been watching him with his hands placed on his hips.
"How?" Sam asked.
"I can bring back all their memories."
Sam drew in a deep breath, knowing that if he gave Castiel the okay to do this, Dean would never forgive them.
"Sam, it's the only way. I know exactly the route they are going to go down if they do not get the answers they are looking for."
Sam sighed heavily. "When will you do it?"
"I can do it tonight when they are sleeping. When they wake, they will be confused but they will know the truth." Castiel explained.
While Sam and Castiel discussed their plan inside, Dean stared at Lisa's number in his phone with tears filling his eyes. He desperately wanted to live a life with them but in his line of work and in his life, he wouldn't be able to. He knew this. He had already tried it. That whole year was spent worrying about monsters and demons all while missing his brother and wanting him to somehow come back. And he did. Dean's life changed for what he thought was the better. He had hunted his whole life and it felt wrong not to, but at the same token, he enjoyed living normally. He enjoyed having a 9-5 job and going home and having a family dinner he and Lisa cooked together and spending time together in the living room watching TV as a family. It all seemed boring to the life they lived, but it was a life he longed for.
With one hand holding tightly to his phone, he wiped the tears from his eyes with the other hand as he sighed heavily. '"Son of a bitch." He whispered as he tried to pull himself together. He was ready to leave town and began to grow impatient with his brother.
"Sammy!" He called from outside. "Let's get going!"
Sam heard his brother's voice from inside the hotel room as he finished packing his bag. "Is there any harm to this being done?" Sam asked Castiel who sat neatly at the chair by the table.
"Not usually."
Sam's head turned quickly to look at the trench coat wearing angel. "Not usually?" Sam repeated, bewildered by Castiel's nonchalant attitude.
"Yes. There are cases where once people know the truth, they can go insane and end up hurting themselves." He explained.
"And why didn't you mention this before?" Sam began to grow irritated. Of course Castiel left out an important detail like this that could alter everything and make it worse. Just then, Dean swung the door open and looked at his brother impatiently. He had seen Castiel sitting at the table, but chose to ignore him.
"Sam, I really want to go. Let's get out of here." Dean repeated before exiting the room again. Sam pulled his back onto his shoulder and inched closer to Castiel.
"Do it quickly." Sam whispered before leaving Castiel in the room by himself. From the rearview mirror of the Impala, Dean watched his younger brother throw his belongings in to the trunk. He shook his head, knowing damn well Sam and Castiel had been talking about the situation with Ben and Lisa. Sam slid into the passenger seat and cleared his throat as if he was about to speak.
"Sam, please." Dean said in a gentle tone.
"What?"
"I know what you're going to say. Just, please don't." Dean was hurting and Sam saw this. At this very moment, watching his big brother keep his eyes closed to keep the tears from falling, Sam knew Dean didn't want anything else to do with this situation, but to completely drop it. He began to regret telling Castiel to go through with it, but he knew he was doing it more for the sake of Ben and Lisa's safety than for Dean. At least, that's what he thought he was doing.
"I was just going to suggest we get something to eat before we hit the road." Sam said softly. Dean's eyes opened and he looked at his brother with a confused look.
"You want something to eat?" He repeated, wanting to clarify that is what he really heard and he wasn't letting his own hunger get the better of him.
"Yeah."
Dean chuckled as he started the Impala. The engine roared to life and Dean placed his hand on the shifter. "Now, you're speaking my language little brother."
The tires of the car skidded along the pavement as Dean took off from the parking lot.
As the boys ate, Ben and Lisa were driving back from the hospital discussing the events of the day and the confusion they brought them. Lisa had been ranting the entire drive home as Ben sat patiently in the passenger seat, resting his chin on his hand. He watched out the window to see the familiar black Impala parked in front of a diner.
"Mom, look." Ben spoke up. Lisa looked to where Ben was pointing and saw the car as well. Lisa slammed on the brakes causing Ben to jolt forward. His seatbelt caught him and brought him back to the seat as Lisa turned the car around. She parked in front of the Impala and turned her car off.
"It's time to get some answers, baby." Lisa said, running her fingers through Ben's hair. He gave her a nervous smile before they both exited the car.
