Remember Me

Chapter Ten: And So the Truth Comes Out

...

Lisa hurried into the diner with Ben hot on her heels. The anger was rising in Lisa's small body as she came closer to the building. It all stemmed from the confusion this brought her and her son and the uncertainty of it all. What did it mean? How did she supposedly share a life with him like her son claimed yet had no recollection of it? And why would someone she shared a life with turn around and stab her then lie about it? She was confused and scared. Who knew what Dean would do when she told him she figured out the truth. Would he kill her? Would he harm her son?

She arrived at the door of the diner and paused. Ben eyed his mother carefully as he watched the tears fall from her eyes.

"Mom, are you okay?" He questioned, placing a hand on her shoulder. She gave him a weak smile before wiping the tears away.

"Yeah, baby. Just whatever happens, know that I love you." She placed her hand on top of her son's.

"Mom, you're scaring me."

"I don't mean to, but we don't know what is going to unfold in there."

"Do you really think he is some sort of psychopath that'll kill you? He didn't seem that way when he stopped at the house."

"People can surprise you, Ben."

"He may surprise you by not being a murderous psychopath."

Lisa sighed heavily. "Let's hope so." Taking a deep breath, she placed her hand on the handle of the door and slowly swung it open. They scanned the inside of the diner looking for Dean when they found him sitting at the booth eating with someone else. She slowly approached the booth with Ben close behind. With each step closer, her heart began to race. Her breathing began getting shorter. She drew in a deep breath before reaching the table.

"Dean." She said, feeling as if she had just run a mile. Dean turned to face her. His eyes widened in surprise.

"Lisa." He said in a near whisper.

"Can we talk?" Lisa tried to contain herself, but her entire body was shaking.

"Yeah, of course." Dean replied. He shot his brother a look and Sam immediately knew what it meant. He cleared his throat and slid out of the booth.

"I'll give you guys a minute." He spoke before slipping away. Lisa took Sam's seat as her son slid in next to her.

"What's up?" Dean questioned, giving her all his attention.

"I know, Dean." Lisa's heart beat faster and faster by the minute. She felt as if she was going to pass out. She kept her hands on her lap underneath the table, hidden from Dean so he didn't notice how nervous she was. Ben placed a hand on his mother's shoulder to comfort her. Dean sighed heavily and shook his head.

"Dammit Cas." He mumbled. "Look, I told Sammy and Castiel not to do it and they never listen to me. They tried convincing me it would do more harm than good if you guys didn't know the truth."

The words coming from Dean's mouth made no sense to her. Lisa's eyebrows furrowed.

"What?" She questioned, growing confused. Dean noticed the confusion on Lisa's and Ben's faces and immediately knew that wasn't what they were talking about.

"What?" He asked, copying Lisa.

"What are you talking about?"

"What are you talking about?"

Lisa leaned in closer to Dean. "I am talking about how you stabbed me." She snapped in a whisper. Dean's eyes widened.

"Wait, what?" He needed clarification.

"I went to the hospital to get more information on my car accident you said I was in and the doctor told me I never was in a car accident, I was stabbed." Lisa explained, still talking quietly so others in the booths around them wouldn't hear their conversation.

Dean began to understand what she was talking about. He remembered the demon that inhabited her body and stabbed her. He began to grow downright pissed off. The memories of the demon hurting the love of his life made him want to throw everything off the table and punch a wall. He felt particularly reckless when it came to memories of Lisa and Ben getting hurt.

"Dammit." He murmured as he threw himself back against the booth. "Lis, I can explain."

"Then explain. Please enlighten me." Lisa found her sitting against the back of the seat. Dean sat still, watching Lisa and Ben in front of him. He tried to come up with a way to explain what happened without feeling insane. It was at this moment, he wanted Castiel to come swoop in and give them their memories back.

"I-I... It was this..." He stammered. The words wouldn't come out.

"I'm waiting." Lisa gritted her teeth.

"I can't explain." Dean murmured. "Lis, I'm sorry."

"Right." Lisa said annoyed. Ben slid out of the booth and she followed after him. She studied Dean's expression for several seconds before speaking again. His face showed every emotion. Anger, frustration, sadness, heartbreak. All in just a few seconds. She watched as he slumped in the booth defeated.

"Until you can get your story straight, which I doubt you ever will, come find us. Until then, leave my son and I alone. Leave Cicero and never come back."

That was it. That was Dean's breaking point. Those words left him wanting to just disappear. His throat tightened up as he watched Lisa leave. The tears welling up in his eyes fell down his cheeks. His lips trembled as he tried to conceal his emotions. This time, he couldn't hide them. Sam came back to the booth and looked at his brother sympathetically.

"Dean, I'm-"

Dean's hand shot up, stopping his brother. "Please don't. Let's just go." He got up from the booth, ripped his keys from his jacket pocket and began making his way out of the diner.

The drive was silent. Every time Sam tried to speak, Dean would stop him. He didn't feel like talking or keeping a conversation going. He just wanted to focus on the road and let his mind wander. Sam looked at the time on his phone. He wondered if Lisa and Ben had fallen asleep yet and if Castiel had given their memories back. Maybe, just maybe, Dean would be okay. Maybe Lisa and Dean could fix things. Maybe they could find the answer to everyone's question about Ben's father.

"Come on, Cas." Sam whispered very quietly, making sure his brother wouldn't hear.

Back in Cicero, Lisa and Ben lay in bed letting sleep take them. After the emotional day they had, all they wanted was to sleep and forget it. Once they had arrived home from the diner, they didn't do much talking. They simply ate in silence and went to bed. They weren't even sure what had happened. They had to process the events at the diner and Dean's words before they could actually discuss it. They had given each other a hug before bed, Lisa gave her son a gentle kiss on the cheek, and let each other know they loved each other.

As Lisa nestled into her bed, Castiel appeared in her room and gently placed his hand on her forehead.

"You'll remember."

Repeating his actions for Ben, he closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath. "You'll remember and hopefully find out who your dad really is."
