Remember Me
Chapter Twelve: Paternity Test

Dean was sure he was making the right decision to leave them. He was sure that if he stayed around any longer, they would just get hurt even more. The pain was unbearable to him. He didn't even want to think what it was doing to Ben and Lisa. He trembled as the chilly air hit his body. He shoved his hands in his pockets as he fought the tears, walking back to the Impala. He leaned against his beloved car, waiting for his brother to emerge from the house. Inside the Braedon's home, Lisa stood still as she stared at the front door. She as hoping he would come walking back in, but her hopes slowly faded away as she came to the realization that he wasn't returning. Sam sighed heavily as he got up to his feet. Ben approached his mother and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"Are you okay, Mom?" Ben questioned as she kept her eyes glued on the door.
"I-I... don't know.." Lisa stammered.
"Look, Lisa, I'm sorry about Dean. I wish he could see how much pain he's putting you through." Sam said in a gentle voice. Lisa turned to face the younger, yet taller Winchester brother. Sam had resembled Dean in some ways. She had never realized how much they resembled one another until right at this minute. Lisa averted her gaze from Sam to her very own son and could see much of Dean in him. Throughout the years, before Castiel scrubbed their minds, as Ben grew older, Lisa began to notice his similarities between her son and Dean. Deep down, she had rising suspicions that Dean was his father.
Lisa's eyes widened. She knew she couldn't keep Dean around by herself, but if he knew he had a son, maybe he would stick around for the sake of his kid. Lisa wasn't about to just tell Dean that Ben was his son to keep him around, she knew she needed proof. She wanted proof. She did have a one night stand with some biker guy after Dean had left, but he was acting more and more like Dean everyday. She needed the answers. She gasped loudly and slipped away from Sam and Ben quickly.
"Mom, what are you doing?" Ben questioned as she rushed to the door and swung it open.
"Dean!" She shouted from the entry way of the house. Dean turned to see her running towards him. He straightened himself out against his car as she got closer. "Dean." She said again, breathless.
"What is it?" Dean questioned, genuinely concerned about what was going on.
"I know you won't stay with me, but what if I told you that I genuinely think Ben is your son?" Lisa watched Dean's face harden in front of her. His body tensed up as the words began to settle in. His breathing slowed to the point it almost felt like he wasn't breathing anymore. His stomach twisted and turned and his throat felt as if it was closing in. His son? He automatically began to go from heartbroken to confused to downright pissed off. How could Lisa keep this from him? How could she let him go this entire time with thinking that Ben wasn't his child?
"My son?" Dean questioned again. "My son?!"
"Yes, Dean. Your son."
"Are you kidding me with this shit, Lisa?! Are you serious?!" Lisa was taken aback by Dean's sudden outburst, but she tried her best to remain calm and collected. She drew in a deep breath before speaking.
"Yes, I'm serious." She replied, keeping her tone nice and even. She wasn't about to start a screaming match with Dean in the middle of the street.
"You told me Ben was some biker guy's kid. What happened to that?"
"Truth be told, I thought he was. It seemed like the timeline matched." Lisa explained. Dean tilted his head back and groaned loudly. "I'm sorry this is coming out now."
"So, now what? We just go off on a limb and start calling him my son?" Dean's voice lowered as he spoke.
"No." Lisa said with a shake of her head. "We go to the hospital and request a paternity test."
"When?"
"Today."
Dean gave her a quick nod of his head. The sooner they did this, the sooner they could get the results. He was torn. A part of him, a huge part, wanted Ben to be his son. He had grown so close to the kid and he had felt a connection to him, more than just some guy that had dated his mom. Ben always called him if there was an emergency and had always texted him any big news that occurred in his life. Ben was important to him, there was no doubt about that, but at the same token Dean hoped Ben wasn't his son. He didn't want Ben to grow up with the same life he had. Sure, Ben was able to go to school in one place his entire life and he didn't constantly move from place to place, but at least he wouldn't have had a dad that was never home. At least there was less of a chance of him becoming a hunter. Most boys look up to their fathers and think their fathers are the best and he didn't want Ben to think that of Dean. He wanted Ben to graduate high school, go to college, marry a girl, start a family, and live a happy and full life. Dean wanted Ben to live a life he and his brother didn't get to live. They were thrown into the world of hunting and that's the last thing Dean ever wanted for Ben.
He slowly climbed into the car and started it. The engine roared to life as he still pondered the implications of Ben being his son. Soon, the others were climbing into the car and heading towards the hospital. When they had arrived to the hospital, they had been directed towards the lab where they took Ben's and Dean's blood. Dean wasn't a very big fan of needles. It was funny. Dean was willing to cut himself numerous times with knives just to prove he was himself, but wasn't particularly a large fan of needles. Ben had the same discomfort as Dean, which only made Dean believe even more that Ben was his son.
Sam sat next to his brother while Lisa and Ben sat across from the boys as they awaited the results. It was strangely quiet and the energy in the room felt awkward. Dean began to grow impatient with how long it was taking.
"How much longer?" He whined.
"Dean." Sam uttered. "Don't start." Ben chuckled at the interaction between the brothers.
"You'd think Sam was the oldest and Dean was the youngest." He said, still chuckling. Lisa gave her son a half hearted smile while Sam chuckled along with him.
"I-I act my age." Dean stammered.
"When you want to." Sam pronounced. Dean rolled his eyes.
"Bitch."
"Jerk."
Finally the lab assistant came sauntering into the waiting room. The four emerged to their feet as they were finally ready to hear the news.
"We got the results." She said, her gaze jumping back and forth between Lisa and Dean. "The results are..."
