Miraculously, Spencer only had one nightmare that night. He woke up sweating and breathing harshly around 4am, but was able to calm himself down. When Morgan walked into his room in the morning, he was already up.
"Daddy, daddy! I did it! I slept alone!" he said excitedly, jumping up and down.
"I'm so proud of you baby!" He said just as enthusiastically. "No nightmares?"
Spencer stopped jumping but still had a smile painted on his face. "No I had a nightmare but I was okay. It wasn't dark and I did the breathing thingy you taught me so I calmed down."
Morgan smiled, happy that Spencer was making progress in his recovery. "I'm so happy to hear that baby boy. Let's get you dressed and then eat some breakfast."
While Morgan helped Spencer get dressed, he subtly checked the boy's arm for any indications of more self harm. Seeing none, he let out a breath he didn't realize was holding, now knowing that Spencer did actually sleep last night.
When they got to the kitchen he asked Spencer, "What do you want for breakfast?"
"Can I have that yummy marshmallow cereal?!" He asked, once again jumping up and down. The almost full night of sleep definitely gave him some energy.
Morgan chucked at his excitement. "Well it's not very healthy, but you can have it as a treat okay? Since you were such a brave little boy last night."
Spencer immediately dug in once the bowl of cereal was placed in front of him. Morgan also got himself a bowl, but it was of a healthier cereal.
"Daddy I'm done! Can I go play?" Spencer asked.
Morgan smiled fondly as he looked up at his son, whose mouth was dyed a rainbow of colors from the cereal. He looked down at the boys bowl, which he found to be mostly full, just missing the sugary bits. "Spencer," he chuckled, "You can't just eat the marshmallows."
Spencer slumped back in his chair and let out a whine. "Why not? Those are the yummy parts!"
"I know Pretty Boy but they're not nutritious." Suddenly the doorbell rang, making Spencer yelp. "It's okay bud. You finish the rest of your cereal, then you can go play, okay? I'm going to go see who's at the door."
Spencer nodded and started practically inhaling the rest of his breakfast. Morgan got up and went to the door, wondering who it could possibly be this early in the morning. When he opened the door, it was the last person he expected. "Ma?"
"Oh Derek, it's so good to see you!" Fran Morgan said as she entered the house and hugged the stunned man.
Derek shook himself out of his surprise and returned the hug. "Ma, hey, it's good to see you too. What're you doing here?"
"Well you called and said you needed to talk, and that friend of yours Penelope flew me out to surprise you!"
Morgan laughed to himself, now understanding what was going on. "Yeah that sounds like Penelope. Come on in."
They began walking through the house, Fran looking around and admiring the beauty of the brand new house. When they got to the kitchen, Spencer was nowhere to be seen, though his empty bowl still sat on the table.
"Is this new house what you wanted to tell me about? It's beautiful!"
"Um, no. That's not what I needed to talk to you about." Morgan said slowly, unsure how to disclose that he now has a child.
"Well what is it then? I'm all ears baby." Fran asked, leaning against the kitchen counter.
"Okay, uh, I don't really know how to say this-" Morgan started, but was cut off when Spencer ran into the room, stuffed bear in hand. Spencer froze, not expecting the newcomer, before running over to his dad and hiding behind his legs.
Fran looked at Derek with surprised, questioning eyes. "Um, Derek, who is this?"
Derek pulled Spencer out from behind him, but the boy quickly turned and buried his face into his father's pant leg. "Ma, uh, this is my son, Spencer."
The poor older woman was stunned for what seemed like forever before she finally spoke. "Your… son?"
"Yes, my son." Morgan lifted Spencer into his arms, who once again hid himself in his fathers chest. He walked closer to his mother, but Spencer let out a whine and pushed himself away from the new woman. "Spencer, baby, it's okay, she's not going to hurt you. This is my mom, your grandma."
Spencer peaked out at the woman, but stayed partially hidden behind his teddy bear. He looked up at his dad. "My grandma?" Morgan nodded to the boy with a gentle smile on his face.
Spencer offered her a small wave. "Hi," he whispered, before turning back into his father's chest.
Derek rubbed his back reassuringly before placing the boy on the floor. "Okay bud, you go play in your room while I talk to your grandma."
Spencer looked between the two adults and nodded, making sure to hug his dad before running out of the room.
"Derek, since when do you have a child?! He looks like he's 3 or 4! Have you been hiding my grandbaby from me for four years?!" Fran practically yelled once Spencer was gone.
"No." He said sternly, stopping her questioning. "I adopted Spencer, who's 5, almost 6. He's only been with me for a little while."
"Well why am I only finding out now? Why didn't you tell me when you first brought him home?"
Morgan released a sigh and rubbed the back of his head. "Yeah… I'm sorry about that. It was kind of all of a sudden, and a lot has happened since then. But I called you because I wanted to tell you about him."
Fran smiled at her son's nervousness. "Okay well, better late than never." She started walking in the direction Spencer ran off in. "Now I want to properly meet him now that I'm not as startled."
Morgan quickly stepped forward and grabbed her arm, stopping her in her tracks."Wait, I need to tell you a bit more about him first. Just so that you don't scare him."
"Why would I scare him? I'm an old lady! How intimidating can I possibly be?"
Morgan chuckled. "You're not an old lady, ma. And it's because he's pretty much scared of everyone. We… we found him on a case..."
Her jaw dropped. "One of your cases? Like with the murderers and stuff?" She asked, fearing the answer.
"Yes. We were investigating a series of murders and found the unsub to be a man named Colby Hobbs. When we went to his house to arrest him he wasn't there… but Spencer was." He took a deep breath before continuing. "He was in the basement, covered in blood and naked."
"Oh god..." she gasped, a hand coming up to cover her mouth.
Morgan nodded solemnly. "He was malnourished and dehydrated, beaten badly, and clearly suffered sexual abuse. He was with Hobbs for almost 3 years."
"Oh my god… What, what about his parents?"
"His mother died, and his father actually sold him to Hobbs. Only $20,000. He even went back to rape Spencer himself..."
"Bastard..." she hissed. "Did you ever find Hobbs?"
Her son's face hardened and his eyes darkened. "He found us… He broke into my house while we were sleeping. He drugged me so I couldn't wake up to stop him. And Spencer… he took Spencer from me. He raped him in his bed while I was just a few doors down the hall..."
Tears were now running silently down his face, but he didn't stop. "He didn't have him for long. But when we found him, god Ma it was terrible." His eyes were staring ahead, clearly reliving the memory. "Spencer was hanging from the ceiling covered in blood. Like someone dumped a bucket of it over him, but it was all from his injuries. Hobbs cut him all over his body, and he whipped him…"
His mom also had tears running down her face, both from the upsetting story and the clear pain on her son's face. But he wasn't done. "When we got there, Hobbs stabbed him in the stomach. He almost died… He coded in the ambulance, but they brought him back. Ma, I almost lost him!"
With that he broke down. He logically knew what had happened, but he never really said it out loud. His mom wrapped him in a hug, shushing him until he calmed down. "It's okay baby, he's okay. You didn't lose him. He's here with you and you're both safe."
After a bit, he withdrew from his mother's hug and wiped away his tears. "Sorry..."
She rubbed his arm gently. "It's okay Derek. I can see that Spencer means a lot to you. I would have been devastated if that happened to either you or your sisters. Now why don't you tell me about Spencer, not his past."
A warm smile that Fran had never seen before spread across his face. "Well he's probably the sweetest and kindest little boy you'll ever meet. When we first found him in that basement, he neglected his own injuries and instead tried to get my coworker to leave because she looked like Hobbs' other victims."
He let out a chuckle. "And he's a genius! He just recently decoded a message on one of our cases that no one else could. He even managed to profile the unsub."
"He sounds wonderful. Do you think I could properly meet him?"
Morgan nodded. "Yeah, just be gentle with him."
