They found Spencer standing against the wall in his bedroom, as far from the door as he could get, hugging his bear to his chest. He looked between the two adults cautiously.
"I heard yelling…" Spencer said carefully, before looking closer at his dad's face. "And you were crying…"
"Don't worry bud, I'm fine. Everything is okay. Why don't you come over here?" Morgan asked, beckoning him over.
Spencer slowly made his way over, avoiding Fran, and raised his arms up so his dad would pick him up. Morgan lifted him into his arms, but didn't let the boy hide away.
"Hi Spencer," Fran said quietly, while slowly stepping closer to the duo. "My name is Fran, but you can call me grammy." Morgan chuckled silently, not at all surprised that his mother had chosen a nickname for herself already. "I like your bear. What's his name?"
Spencer held out his cherished toy. "Teddy..."
"Aw, that's a very nice name. Ya know, your dad had a teddy bear that looked just like yours when he was little. He called it Poodle."
Spencer giggled and looked up at Morgan. "That's silly, it's a bear not a poodle!"
Morgan ruffled the boy's hair. "Well I think it was a good name. It fit his curly fur."
Spencer giggled again and looked back at the woman, his grandmother. He never had a grandmother before. It was always just him, his father, and his mother in his family. He was kind of excited to get even more family members. Hopefully she was as nice as his new aunts and uncles.
Fran saw the little boy studying her and decided to see if she could get him to open up a bit more. "Well, Spencer, do you think you could show me around this beautiful home of yours?"
Spencer looked up at Derek for permission, who nodded encouragingly. The boy's smile grew, as he was very excited about his new house. "This is my room." He started, waving his hand around the room. "It's got space stuff cause I really like space. And there's stars on the ceiling and they glow!"
He wiggled in his fathers arms until he was placed on the floor, and ran over to the light switch and flicked it off. The stars gave the room a pleasant green glow. "They keep the dark away so I'm not scared when I wake up from nightmares!"
Fran's smile fell for a split second at that sad statement, but she quickly replaced it so Spencer wouldn't get upset. Morgan smiled sadly. "Spencer was actually able to sleep all by himself last night."
She turned to the boy with animated surprise. "Wow! Do you usually sleep with your dad?"
Spencer blushed and fidgeted under the attention. "Uh huh. Daddy helps me with nightmares but I slept alone last night. I still had a nightmare but I calmed myself down without help." He said proudly.
"That's really good sweetie! I'm very impressed."
"Thank you!" He liked his grandmother already. "Daddy made me a library too!"
Her grin grew at the excitement of the child. "He did?! That's super cool. Your dad tells me you're very smart. Do you like to read?"
Morgan was worried Spencer would react badly to being called smart, but the boy simply spared him a quick glance as if to check if his dad was upset before turning back nodding enthusiastically. "I love to read."
Fran stood. "Well do you think I could see this library?" She asked, extending her hand.
Spencer looked between her hand and her face, before looking over at Morgan. His face clearly said 'I'm trusting you about her'. He hesitantly placed his hand in hers, before leading her to the library.
Fran took a look around the large room. She could tell her son loved Spencer greatly, just based on the lengths he went to make him comfortable in this new home. "Wow Spencer, this is a very nice library. The shelves are a little empty though."
He pulled her over to the only occupied shelf, which held close to half a dozen books. "No, look, I have lots of books." He pointed to the books from JJ. "These are from my aunt JJ. I really like 'Where the Wild Things Are'. But my favorite book is this one," he said, now pointing to 'Empty Planet'. He then pulled out a large stack of papers, held together with a binder clip. "And this is my Uncle Dave's book. It's not finished yet but he's letting me read it. I'm his editor!"
Fran turned to Morgan in surprise, who was simply smiling proudly at his son. "Wow. Well Spencer I think you could use some more books to fill these shelves. Why don't I take you to a bookstore and buy you some books?"
Spencer's jaw dropped. "R-really? You'll get me new books?" He glanced at Morgan. "Will daddy be there?"
"Of course sweetie. Whatever you're comfortable with."
"Okay… grammy"
By the time they made it to the bookstore, Spencer was practically vibrating with excitement. Morgan unbuckled the little boy from his carseat and allowed him to hop out of the car. He was about to run to the bookstore across the street, but Morgan grabbed him and pulled him back before he could get far.
"Spencer, you can't run into the road. You have to hold someone's hand to stay safe."
"Oh, okay." He placed his little hand in his fathers', before the three made their way to the store.
When they stepped inside, Spencer was jumping slightly. "Can I look at books daddy?!"
Morgan chuckled at his excitement and let go of the boy's hand. "Go for it buddy."
Spencer was about to run off, but stopped himself and turned back to Morgan. "You're gonna stay, right?"
He smiled sadly at his son. "Yes, baby. I'm going to stay. I'll be right behind you the whole time with your Grandma."
Spencer nodded once before running off to look for books. Both of the adults looked on fondly as Spencer dropped to his knees in front of a bookshelf and started looking through the books. "He's a sweetheart. I can see what you saw in him." Fran said after a moment.
"Spencer's amazing. He's the kindest little boy I've ever met and he's been through so much. He's strong." Morgan said with a tight voice.
Fran placed a comforting hand on her son's arm. "I can tell. I don't think I would ever be able to survive what he went through. And he's just a little baby. But I can also tell that he needs you, and you need him. He's good for you."
Morgan's lips twitched up into a smile. "Yeah… Being his dad just feels right. I don't know what I'd do without him..."
They stood in silence for a few more moments, until Derek spoke up again. "So… the new house has a guest room… I was thinking maybe you could stay for a while, since you're retired and all."
"Derek, are you asking me to move in?" She asked her son with a hint of glee in her voice.
"Yes, Ma. I was hoping you would be willing to watch Spencer while I work. I just can't see hiring a stranger working out."
"I would love to. I'm just happy that I finally got a grandbaby. I don't think you could get me to leave even if you tried." They both chuckled. "Is Spencer okay with me watching him?"
"He doesn't know yet. I want him to get to know you first. He seems to be warming up to you quickly though. I was worried when he got scared earlier, but he seems to be warming up to you pretty fast."
"He has faith that you won't let anyone bad around him." She said.
Morgan smiled at the thought. Just hearing how Spencer could put that much trust in him made his eyes wet.
Suddenly Spencer ran up to the two with a large book in his hands. "I found the one I want!" He said excitedly.
Morgan took the book from him and looked at the cover. "Proust?" He questioned with an amused tone.
"Uh huh! My mommy used to read it to me. Can I get it?"
Morgan ruffled his hair. "Sure bud. I'll hold it while you go pick some more."
The boy looked back and forth between the two. "I can get more!?"
"Yes baby," Fran spoke up. "You can get as many as you want. My treat."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" He squealed before running off in search of more books.
Spencer ended up getting 10 books, including the book by Proust. The others were mostly non-fiction books on various subjects, from space to dinosaurs, and he even got a beginners guide to the Italian language to surprise his Uncle Dave.
Morgan ended up having to carry two giant bags of hardcover books back to their car. When they got to the road Spencer stopped in his tracks and looked to Morgan. "Daddy I need to hold your hand to stay safe."
Morgan smiled, glad that his boy had listened to him. "Good job listening buddy, but my hands are a little full." He said, holding up the two bags in his hands.
Spencer worried his lip between his teeth before turning to Fran. "Can I hold your hand?" He asked hesitantly.
"Of course sweetie." She responded gently, holding her hand out to him, which he slid his own into.
They all made their way back to the car, and eventually all the way home. When they went inside, Derek went and put the bags of books into the library, before turning to his mom and son. "So I think we should get some food in our bellies."
"Why don't I go out and grab us some food? That way you can have a chat with Spencer." Fran said, giving her son a look.
Morgan silently thanked his mom. "That's a great idea."
With that, Fran left and Morgan led Spencer to his room. They went and sat together in his large bed. "Spencer, how would you feel if Grandma stayed with us?"
Spencer furrowed his brows in thought. "Forever?"
"I'm not sure. For a little while at least."
The boy fidgeted with his hands. "Can I ask a question?" he whispered.
Morgan reached out and took the boy's hands in his own, gently rubbing his thumbs over his little knuckles. "Of course baby, you don't need permission to ask questions. You can just ask."
Spencer nodded, looking slightly unconvinced. "Does she hit?" He asked nervously.
Morgan sighed. "Baby, my momma loves me, and she already loves you-"
"But does she hit?" The child interrupted, a serious look on his face.
"Spencer, people that love us don't hit us. So no, your grandma doesn't hit."
The boy immediately started shaking his head. "No, no, not true. My mommy loved me and she hit me."
Morgan's heart broke. He thought that Spencer at least had a good mother, but now it was clear that everyone in his life abused him. "Baby, no. That's not love. If someone hurts you, they don't actually love you."
Spencer ripped his hands out of his father's. "No!" He screamed, "That's not true! My mommy loved me! You don't know! Mommy loved me!"
"Spencer-" Morgan tried, reaching for the boy. His son dodged his hand and scrambled off the bed.
"No! No! My mommy hit me, but she loved me!"
He ran out of the room then, tears streaming down his face, leaving Morgan in shock behind him.
