Looking down at those three dragonets as the volcano began erupting, I recalled what had brought me to this pit of lava in the first place.

Eight and a half years ago, I had been roaming the continent, searching for a new place where the NightWings could live. The volcanic island's resources were dwindling, and I, as their queen, needed to find a new place for the tribe to live.

But no new islands or territories had been found, and I was beginning to become discouraged. The NightWing tribe would be forever doomed to the volcanic island. But I forged on, determined to find my dying tribe a new home.

One night, I decided to sleep in a small clearing of a forest near the Sky Kingdom.

I huddled into a shadowed spot and curled up, careful to arrange my wings so the silver scales wouldn't be visible and give me away.

I closed my eyes and drifted into a half-sleep.

Little did I know, I was not alone.

I awoke only minutes later to a rustling sound in the trees. My eyes snapped open and I quickly rolled into a dark tree alcove where I would be hidden.

My heart thudded in my chest as the rustling grew closer, and finally, a dragon stepped into the clearing. A dragon with blue-white scales, serrated claws, and a whip-thin spiked tail. An IceWing.

The IceWing looked around for a moment, his gaze passing right over where I hid.

"I know you're here, NightWing," he hissed, narrowing his eyes at a suspicious-looking lump on the other side of the clearing.

He stalked over towards the dark mound. When he was about halfway there, it shifted, and a dragon jumped out at him, flames blazing from his mouth and claws poised to attack.

I shrieked as I recognized the dragon attacking this IceWing. It was my husband, King Nightwalker.

"Nightwalker!" I cried, sprinting towards the battling dragons. But before I got there, the IceWing inhaled deeply and breathed out his deadly frostbreath, right on my husband's wings.

He screamed as it spread, freezing his wings in place. The IceWing took advantage of his pain and sliced his serrated claws through Nightwalker's wings, shattering them.

He then reached up and sliced them right across the NightWing king's throat. Blood spilled everywhere, and the love of my life collapsed on the ground, dead, his blood staining the ground a rusty red.

That was it. No more eggs, no more heirs, no more dragonets. No more king of the NightWings.

I gasped in horror at the scene. Leaping at the IceWing, I yelled as loud as I could, "You'll DIE for that!"

He grinned madly as I sliced at him, dodging every attempt I made to hurt him.

"Not if I kill you first," he cackled with manic delight

I snarled, backing away until I was hovering over Nightwalker's dead body. I knew it was useless to protect a dead body, but I didn't care. I still loved him, and he at least deserved a proper burial.

I fought back the tears that threatened to come. Tears over the future we'd had together. I no longer had any heirs for my throne. Well, I did have my daughter Princess Greatness, but she didn't count. That pathetic, twitchy lizard was not fit to rule.

The IceWing launched himself at me, and I was forced to dodge out of the way as he tumbled past me.

I took in a deep breath, calling the fire from down inside me.

Just as the other dragon turned around to leap at me again, I breathed a plume of flame into his face.

The smell of burnt scales filled the air as he screamed, batting at his blazing face.

The fire died down, leaving blistered scales across the IceWing's face. He had his eyes squeezed shut; he would probably be blind. But he struggled to his feet, lightly touching his scarred face with his talons.

I drew myself to my full height, my silver and black wings spread out, and bellowed, "I am Queen Battlewinner of the NightWings, and I swear upon the three moons shining in this night sky that you will not leave here alive!"

The IceWing flinched at my words, but he quickly pasted a grin on his face.

He mock-bowed to me and responded, "Queen, eh? Nice, nice, very nice. I'm willing to bet that was your king there, now was he?"

I curled my talons into fists.

"Ah, yes," he sneered. "There it is. The fierce, regal queen of the amazing NightWings."

"Do NOT make a mockery of me and my tribe," I roared, fury fueling my attack at him.

I slashed and swiped, slamming my claws deep into his scales. Blue IceWing blood stained my talons as well as his own scales and the dirt.

We fought and fought, but I never felt pain. When he stabbed my shoulder and cut my wing and slammed me into a thick tree trunk, I felt none of it. I felt no physical pain, but my heart had shattered into a thousand pieces. Pieces that no one could ever put back together.

I opened my mouth to blast another bolt of fire at him, but before I could do anything, he hissed and sprayed his frostbreath right down my throat.

My body erupted into pain, ice crawling down my throat and snuffing out my fire. I whacked him over the head, knocking him unconscious, and jumped off the ground, soaring out to the sea and back to the Night Kingdom.

I had been shuddering and cold by the time I collapsed on the beach, guards rushing over to me.

"Queen Battlewinner?" one of them asked. "What happened?"

I shivered and gasped, "Get… help. Warmth."

The three soldiers glanced around, not knowing what to do.

I looked around frantically for any source of heat. A pool of lava sat merely meters away, bubbling and glowing.

I paused, considering my panicked idea. Then my gut lurched, and I could feel my organs freezing together.

No time to hesitate. I leaped into the pool of lava, wincing as I expected to feel myself being burned alive. Nothing happened except the cold pain slowly receding. It had worked.

The memory came back crystal clear every time I recalled what had happened that night.

I fought hard to stay alive, and I was certainly not going to let a bunch of dragonets steal my throne and tribe!

"No," I growled to the RainWing queen, Glory, whilst shooting a glare at my silent daughter.

Glory leveled her eyes with mine and said calmly, "It is not your decision. I think we both know you're not going to make it off this island." She turned to Greatness. "What do you say?" she asked my daughter.

"We'll never bow to lazy RainWings," I spat.

Greatness simply shook her head and said, "Well, I'm not going to rule. Being queen is awful. I say yes," she added to Glory.

"NO!" I screamed, my half-frozen throat scratchy and painful. I lurched up out of my lava pool, ignoring the freezing feeling in my gut. The two NightWing dragonets backed into a corner, but Glory stood her ground, staring into my eyes.

I lunged forward, reaching for her with my claws. I lashed my tail - or, I tried to. My black scales were frozen, stuck in position as I tried to move. Ice spread out across my torso, freezing my wings and my outstretched talons.

A cold, harsh pain battled with my numbing body. Frost creeped its way up my neck, making my head stuck in place.

"No," I croaked. I opened my mouth to shriek something, but nothing came out. I couldn't close my mouth, nor my eyes. I was stuck in place, ice burning my entire body.

The NightWings, including my daughter, and the RainWing quickly left my cave, earthquakes shaking the rocks and floor.

Minutes later, the volcano exploded, and the world disappeared.
