A/N: Hey guys! I am back and I have most of this story written! Now I just need to type it all up. Oof. I'm a little rusty on writing but I hope you enjoy it.
Chapter 6: In Which Things Get More Complicated
Everyone gathered around the broken down bed that held the injured Canadian. He was clenching his teeth trying not to scream or cry. His breathing was rapid and sweat drenched his blond hair.
"Are there any scissors, a knife or something else sharp enough to cut through denim in any of those drawers?" Lukas asked with urgency in his voice.
Vlad hurried back to the uneven, rickety drawer to dig through them once again.
Meanwhile the Norwegian had instructed Arthur and Mathias to go over the items that they had retrieved to make sure they had everything. While Arthur grabbed the spell book, in which they found the spell, Mathias gathered the bag that had all of the supplies. One by one they went through all of the ingredients.
After a few minutes Arthur let out a curse. "That's just great."
"What's wrong now?" Mathias asked.
"We are bloody missing an ingredient. We need dirt from the site where the Wendigo was summoned, over by the silver wood tree past the lake." The Brit explained with a grumble.
"So we have to go back out there again?" Alfred said wide-eyed. He had come over to check for any type of rag or cloth that may have been lying around.
"Unfortunately," Arthur confirmed. "How is Matthew holding up?"
"As well as he can be." Al explained. "Do any of you have a water bottle or something with clean water in it?"
Mathias pulled out a half empty water bottle from the backpack that Matthew had brought. "We're lucky he's always prepared."
"Does he happen to have a first-aid in there?" The American asked, hoping that his brother had actually packed the kit. Luckily, after digging through the bag for a few minutes he emerged with a small box labeled 'First-Aid.'
As soon as Mathias handed Alfred the first-aid kit, Matthew let out a horrific scream. Everyone rushed over back to the bedside. The Canadian was paper white and sweating even more. Alfred poured some of the bottled water onto a cloth that he had found and put it on his brother's forehead.
Lukas was pleased to see the first-aid kit. However when he opened it and a frown spread across his face. It had obviously been a while since he replenished the kit. There was no gauze and many of the other supplies were low. The Norwegian took the rubbing alcohol and poured it over the large, old pair of scissors that Vlad had brought to him. He turned back to Matthew and grabbed the remaining water from Alfred and poured it over the blood stained jacket. Carefully he peeled the jacket away revealing tattered jeans and thick oozing blood.
Matthew let out an agonized groan and clenched his teeth as tears rolled down his cheeks.
"I'm going to cut your pant leg off to uncover the wound," the Norwegian explained to his injured classmate. "I'm not going to lie, this will hurt as I take the fabric away, but we need to uncover it so I can figure out how to heal it." Once he got a hesitant nod from the Canadian he turned to the others and started handing out orders. "Gil, find something for him to bite on so he doesn't bite off his tongue. Al and Mathias, go get some water out of the well out back. Make sure it's enough to fill a pot three-fourths full. Vlad find a big pot and start a small fire so we can boil the water. Arthur look for any pieces of cloth that could serve as a bandage or binding."
Immediately the teens got to work. The albino searched through the backpack and sighed when he didn't find anything that satisfied the needs of his friend. The Prussian was mad at himself for dragging the quiet teen into the situation they were in. Before long Gil remembered that in the movies usually showed the characters would usually bite down on leather belts. So, he stripped off his belt and settled himself next to Mattie try to distract him.
Shortly after Alfred and Mathias returned with the bucket of well water. They gave the water to Vlad, who started boiling it immediately. Once it was in a rolling boil Arthur added the strips and pieces of cloth he had found.
While the rags sterilized, Lukas got to work. He decided to cut up the side of the pant led to gain easier access to the part that needed removed. The closer he got to the wound, the more the Canadian let out sounds that were full of agony and pain. Not long after he completely cut the fabric loose, Lukas slowly and carefully began to remove the denim from Mattie's leg and wound.
"Deep breaths." Gilbert told the other teen. "In. Out. In. Out."
Beside him Alfred was dabbing the sweat from his brother's forehead and everyone else watched the scene unfold. By the time the pieces of cloth were finished being sterilized, a pain filled scream rang out throughout the cabin.
"Oh my." Lucas gasped as he peered at the carnage. It was much worse than he originally thought. Through the holes left by the creature's teeth, the teens could see not only muscle but also bone. From what Lukas could tell the bone wasn't broken. "Arthur, I don't think a simple spell is going to fix this. It would take all of my energy just to patch it up, but that would likely leave long lasting damage."
"Bloody hell, chap." The color drained from the Brit's Face as he looked at the injury. "What do you think our best course of action is?"
"Stitch salve?"
"That might do." Arthur agreed. "So, we need more supplies then."
"Yes." Lukas frowned as he ran through a mental list of what they needed. "Forest Rose Herb, Meadow Sweet, Some type of oil base, and Cloudberry oil."
"Really?" Alfred groaned. "I don't want to go out there again. What if it comes after us again?"
"I doubt it will go after any of us who will be out there." Gilbert said waving his hand dismissively.
Arthur looked at him curiously. "What do you mean?"
"Well," Gilbert's red eyes locked on the Brit's, "it's focus seems to be on Birdie. Al fell and the beast bypassed him, who was an easy target at that point, and headed straight for Birdie. It also didn't even give me or Lukas a second look."
"That is odd," Arthur commented. He turned to Matthew who was looking rather pale again. "Have you noticed anything Matthew?"
Through heavy breaths Matthew replied, "We… made… eye… contact. I've… felt… odd… since then."
"Great. So, it's hunting Matthew." Vlad groaned.
Lukas thought for a moment. "Until we get Matthew's leg patched up, his best option would be to stay here in the cabin. I would be able to put up some wards until you guys bring back the ingredients for the salve."
"That sounds like the best plan for the situation." Arthur agreed.
The teens grew quiet as they took in all of the information that had been placed upon them. Everyone was concerned for their injured friend. Matthew's heavy breathing penetrated the quiet of the cabin. He lay there on the bed with his wound open to the air.
After a while Lukas checked the sterilized cloth pieces and noted that they had cooled down enough to place on Matthew's leg. He decided to place two of the cloth pieces on the wound and save the rest for after the salve was applied.
"Okay." Mathias said loudly, which earned him several glares. "We need to get started on collecting the ingredients because they aren't going to get themselves. There is no way any of us are going to get out of this if we just sit here doing nothing."
Everyone nodded in agreement. They made plans for how the groups were going to be split up. In the end, Mathias and Arthur were to go back to the summoning spot for the dirt. Alfred, Vlad, and Gilbert were to collect the things needed for the salve. Lukas would stay at the cabin with Matthew to keep up the wards and search for any useful ingredients there.
As soon as the plan was finalized, the boys split up and headed out to do their tasks.
