Hello, and thanks for reading my Mortal Kombat fanfiction.

"A Strange Proposition" is a parody of both Mortal Kombat and sports culture in general. It tries to imagine what might happen if the Mortal Kombat became more widely known, rather than being a secret tournament.

It's set in 2020, but the first dozen or so chapters were written in 2017-2018. I've picked it back up in 2021 because of the new Mortal Kombat movie, but have kept it set in 2020. I've made no mention of the global pandemic. This story happens in a parallel universe where no such pandemic happened.

I've played pretty fast and loose with Mortal Kombat lore and canon. I've tried to keep the characters more-or-less as they were in the games and the old 1995 movie, but have had to create new characters – like Ling Nim, Shang Tsung's long-suffering assistant. I've also added my own backstories for some of the characters, giving them origins so that, for example, Raiden can address Jax as "Jackson Briggs of East Tennessee". Most of the Asian characters will address people this way, while the Western characters are much more informal.

Sonya's story of winning glory in physical combat is inspired by the 2015 Thalys train attack.

I've changed Raiden's role substantially – I removed him from the tournament proper and turned him into more of a guide and coach.

The story is still young! There's lots more coming in the next few months and (hopefully not) years!
