The Summit Of My Desires.
Chapter 18-Nothing Endures But Change.
The gang leave Neverland, Liam and Elsa begin to put the past behind them slowly but surely, but just as peace is around the corner something else is on the horizon that will threaten their very existence.
Neverland. After Henry and Pan switch hearts.
One second she had been stood there frozen watching Emma plead with her son who was clearly not listening and the next second Henry had fallen and Pan was frozen and the boy who had foolishly ran with belief over common sense every time was being grabbed at by his three parents all with identical looks of terror on their faces.
And suddenly it didn't matter. It didn't matter about her vow. Weather it had been the words that she had needed someone other than Liam to say, the comments that Regina had made her listen too, suddenly she was glad she had magic.
She was glad because Elsa of Arendelle was going to make the little smug bastard pay.
There was not a person in Storybrooke who had not found Henry's actions annoying. Many people had, had lives that were good and foundations that were solid and she knew of more than one custody case that was brewing in Storybrooke because parents had been parents for twenty eight years and were not willing to let go of that love and that life and that family. There were children who did not want to go back and who wanted to stay, marriages that were now bigamous and happy endings that might not have been obvious but that had been there. Henry had looked at his family and mostly the bigger picture but Elsa had often wondered if they were a lot of people who had been happier in ignorance but despite this, despite all of this people still rallied round Henry. People still loved him and appreciated what he had done. She had always been on the fence about it but now she was staring down the immortal bastard that had killed him, had terrorised Liam to the point where he couldn't sleep and had kept her stuck on this island for a week, without a fucking shower, she really was ready to commit murder.
The magic came from her as easy as it had done when she was a child. For all her claims of control it really was easier to use it when she was angry and right now she was beyond anger, she was furious. She was beyond furious if that was even an emotion. She was enraged. Yes. That was a good word. And with that she smiled.
The blast of magic came out and hit Pan with the full force. He tried to twist but the ice was so strong it flattened him. He rebounded but Elsa was already on him, as he came towards her she jumped mid air and an the ice propelled her forwards so that she was sliding across the cave towards him. He ducked another blow towards him and this time Elsa was pleased to see he looked scared.
Good.
Pan ducked away again and then he was off and Elsa turned the slide she had created turning into steps automatically. She had not felt like this before, she had never felt like this before. The magic that was within her, that was tied within her had always been there but it had never been like this. It had never been like this. Always she had felt that it was in control of her never the other way around and for the first time she could feel all of it inside her, it was in her grasp, this power, fully available like the last door between her and her magic had been unlocked.
"What the—"
"Told you" Regina said and despite the situation there was almost a hint of smugness in her tone. "It was never about the miscarriage or the magic Elsa it was about you! You had to accept that there were things outside of your control, once you did that the last door locking all your potential away was gone. You now have complete control of your magic, it was never tied to a crown or a kingdom or a man, it was tied to you having faith in you"
"That makes no sense" Neal said hoisting Henry up into his arms. Regina rolled her eyes.
"Magic isn't supposed to make sense, it's the very essence of belief. But you believed in yourself, that you could take on Pan and so all of the powers you had been struggling to control lined up neatly ready for you to use. You stopped being afraid of you. Magic is essentially confidence, if you have it you can burn the world or rebuild it"
"Or destroy Pan" Emma said her jaw set. "Look I think Neal and Elsa you should go back to the ship, get Hook, Tink, Liam, my parents, the boys all of them. Get them on the ship and get ready. We don't have much time so once we come back we go. Regina and I can take down Pan but someone has to guard Henry and the shadow. If Pan takes possession of the shadow he could scupper our escape route and I don't think we'll be able to get another one"
Regina passed the coconut shells wadded tight with magic and Elsa cupped them in her hand feeling the trembling shadow rattle around desperate for release. She tucked into her jacket pocket.
"Come on" she muttered.
And then they split up.
What had transpired between Snow White, Regina, Emma and Pan, nobody on that ship knew. Liam had gotten the boys onto the ship when Elsa had come back looking far more…well…her since he had last seen her. Actually she looked serenely confident a look he had not seen on her and it was left to Neal to fill him in on what had happened at Skull Rock including what revelation Elsa had, had to make her this calm.
Liam didn't understand half of it but if it stopped Elsa from blaming herself for…well…it had to be a good thing right?
"Are you alright?" he asked as she wrapped her scarf from around the shadow. She flashed Felix a look at which he stopped glowering at her and started glowering at his feet.
"I think so…Regina and I…we talked and I understand it now a little better. This baby. It was never going to be Liam and it wasn't my fault or the magic that runs inside me it's just…it was just never going to happen. And once I found I could accept that then I could accept anything and everything. And then…and then the magic unlocked…or so Regina says"
To Liam it did not make any sense but then magic never did. Really magic only made sense if you had it and he had never been granted such a burden nor did he ever want to.
"I am so sorry that I lied to you for so long Liam. I should have…I was going to tell you…I just…"
"Killian says I've been different on this island" Liam said looking out over the shoreline. "He says I've been…reverting…was that why?"
"I didn't find out until that night when Belle lost her memories and then by the time I had gotten my brains around it, that I wanted to keep the baby, that someone like Han—well—someone might want to use this baby because it was an heir to my Kingdom then everyone was back from New York. Then it was Cora and Greg and Tamara and we were being pulled this way and that and then the miscarriage happened the day I asked you could we go out that night and that I wanted to surprise you…then as soon as I had gotten home and changed Henry had gone missing and then…"
"And then we ended up here"
"Yes and it just because one thing after another, Pan didn't know and I didn't want him to use it against you. Killian was worried about you, I could see it in his face, you got this look everytime Pan was mentioned and I didn't realise that he was the man in green you dreamt of until the caves and…"
"And then the fairy was out of the bag" Liam finished for her. After his conversation with Killian he could admit that he could see it from her perspective. He knew what this island had done to him.
"This was the beginning of the end for me" he said quietly looking out over the dark shoreline. "I came here with such believes and such principals I could almost laugh. I believed that my King was good and my captaincy an honour. I installed discipline and good standards in my men. I encouraged them to hold themselves to the highest degree of honour and decency. I came here on this ship, it had a flying sail. I didn't even question the horror that the poor beast Pegasus had been through when his tail and his mane was cut off to make this ship. Instead I went with it and who only knows what happened…what I could have prevented. All alone it was nothing but a fraud. I was nothing but a fraud. And here was when I learnt the truth the for the first time. The poison…everything that came after them. All of it…it was nothing compared to the loss and the understanding of what my principals had cost me"
Elsa listened. There was not much more that she could do other than that. She was listening to the man that she loved more than anything tell her his secrets and she was not going to interrupt.
"And then I arrived in this forest. And that town were let's face it there was very little to do other than farm. I could hardly walk down to the local tavern and say I was from a place that used and continued to use magic. And I met you…and I saw for the first time that magic could be good and a monarch could care about her people. Dear God Elsa the thought of you…and you a Queen…"
"Liam did you honestly think I cared who you were…you looked at me as if I was a woman and not a Queen, as if I was human and I wanted nothing but you. I didn't want the sacrifices I had seen my mother go through, all I wanted was a good man in my bed and a good man to but it blunt between my legs and I wanted a man to see me. And I got the best man in the world. The most amazing man in the entire realm and I will carry your son one day and I don't give a shit who rules Arendelle when that happens—"
But she was cut off because at that moment Liam's mouth had clamped down around hers and it was like the years between them, the curses and the nightmares and the shitty parents had faded to nothing and it was Liam and Elsa and they had it all.
"When we return to Storybrooke I am going to get you a ring" Liam said they broke apart.
"Because to be honest Elsa. I really don't know what my life is going to be without you and I hope to God I never find out"
Elsa watched him for a second and then her hand which had been on top of his intertwined.
"You better get on one knee Captain"
"Nah your Majesty. This Captain—"
"Oh for the love of God will you too just get on with it so we can keep our dinners down!"
That was Killian. Liam turned to look and saw that he seemed to be speaking for Neal, Tink and any Lost Boy (excluding Felix) who seemed to be over the age of sixteen.
"As always brother, the tact of a man with a bullet through his head."
"And as always brother, the brains of a man who needs a bullet through his head"
"Bastard"
"Twit"
"Boys" Elsa said though she was grinning.
Whatever was about to say next was hampered when Henry was brought on board. Regina did something with her hand that Liam couldn't see and then Henry was awake though tired and Regina was reaching for the shadow in the coconut cup.
(Will and Cyrus were going to have a field day when he told them that story. There was going to be drinks named after this once he told them the full story. Cocktails named after Peter Pan. What a wonderful end to a man who had caused so much utter misery and destruction to innocent children and their families.)
He grabbed Elsa's hand as the shoreline disappeared as they took to the skies and he looked back at the place he called Hell as it disappeared and this time Liam knew that he was leaving the darker parts of him on it's shores and that this time he was choosing for the first time to look towards a future that was for once free of the threat of Peter Pan once and for all.
Storybrooke. After Rescuing Henry.
They landed with Storybrooke with a bump.
Neither Liam nor Elsa bothered with the welcomes. Neither one of them wanted a hug from Granny to tell them what they had conquered on that island. Instead they had gone hand in hand to their apartment and while Liam had made calls to see if the establishment where he worked was still standing, Elsa had gotten into the shower and nearly cried.
It was so nice to hit warm water. She scrubbed and buffed and shampooed and conditioned everything away and then when she came out her coconut body lotion was exactly where it had been a week ago and she was able to slather a load on her body feeling renewed.
Liam went in the shower as she dressed in an old shirt she used to sleep in and routed in the fridge. God bless Belle she had cleared a lot of the stuff out but Elsa had always been a fan of microwave meals and she found two and stabbed at them.
They ate them straight out of the plastic, Liam poured them too glasses of water as she used a toothbrush (for the first time in a week!) and then they were tumbling into bed, safe in each others arms with the knowledge that though they had sorted through most of the immediate questions there were still some pressing ones left to be answered.
But they didn't care about that.
Both of them cared about nothing but sleep.
And sleep they did.
It was the first time in a long time that either one of them was able to sleep without nightmares, they slept because Pan was trapped, because the demons felt by both of them were exorcised and neither of them were carrying this big bad dark secret anymore. And when they woke up for the first time they made love slowly and softly the way they had done when they had been in the Enchanted Forest where one day time sped up for a curse and all the little moments became little hours and time was the only gift they had.
"We'll have children some day you know" Liam said into her hair once they were finished and Elsa nodded already feeling sleepy again. She wanted children with this man but she was also…well…technically she was still a Queen.
"I think I want the ring first" she said grinning.
Liam laughed and dropped a kiss on her forehead and then the phone made a loud buzzing noise from under the covers that had fallen to the side.
"Yeah" Liam said reaching for his jeans and throwing Elsa's shirt at her.
"Killian who the hell leant you a phone? No…No I know there a strange device. No your not suppose to stab your hook through the main button use your good hand…yes...honestly one of these days I'll introduce you to the TV and you can see what you make of that. Look can you just get to the point and tell me what is going on and why I should care—"
There was a pause as Liam spoke and Elsa knew deep down within her what was going on. She got dressed as Liam hung up somehow doubting that their quite night of pizza and Netflix was going to happen. Liam sighed and then sat down on the bed looking older than she had seen him even on that damned island.
"Tell me" she said
"Your not going to believe what that blasted demon has done now"
Henry was in Pan and Pan was in Henry. Killian really did not know what to make of it but he knew enough to know that when you could feel the rage coming off a woman when you were standing feet away from her it was better to not push forwards with a plan to woo.
Instead he turned to Liam who was standing leaning against a tree with a mutinous expression. Elsa had been with Regina peering over spell books and so Killian slid next to his brother.
"You know we will get him" it was pointless to ask Liam if he was alright. Many things about his brother had changed, the set of his jaw when he was so angry he could not speak was one of them.
"Sometimes I hate the fact that she came to town" Liam said staring at Emma with flat eyes.
"I…sometimes…everything was fine. I was…I wasn't dragged kicking and screaming into the night of the living freak show and I had the chance to just work things out on my own. Elsa's got a point sometimes. The Charming's life sucked under this curse, doesn't mean everyone's did"
"Aye perhaps but you had no memories. Even if you did have nightmares"
"The nightmares I could handle. And no memories of Neverland was a blessing. You name me one person who wants to keep their memories of Neverland?"
Killian said nothing. Liam was new when he was like this, hard and angry and dangerous and Killian was still not sure they were on even footing. He wanted to tell Liam that it was not Swan's fault that she had accidentally broken a curse and saved her family. He wanted to tell him that nobody had made Liam get on his ship and he also knew a part of Liam had thought he was safe only to have the rug pulled out from under him. He knew Liam, he knew how he operated when he was angry but this…this was something new.
Perhaps he needed to talk to someone that wasn't family?
Killian opened his mouth to suggest this idea when Gold came forwards with a plan, they would meet in the town square upon the morrow. Clearly Emma and Regina were not happy with this plan but as David pointed out, what harm could Pan really do in this world.
Liam scoffed.
This time Killian really couldn't blame him.
The Dark One was dead.
And Pan, his father was with him.
Elsa blinked. She had not expected that. Looking around she didn't think anyone had.
Belle had fallen to her knees sobbing. Neal was half standing, half crouched over her obviously wondering what to do and Emma and Regina were curled around their son. Elsa bent to hug Belle letting the woman curl her body around her. She had never had a problem with the Dark One (mainly because she stayed out of his way) and she liked to think that he had never had a problem with her but she knew that however indifferent she felt about him dying if it had been Liam in his place (which considering his desire to have Pan killed was not completely out of the ordinary) she would have been just as distraught and she would have wanted someone to comfort her. Besides. One of the perks of having Killian in their lives now was the fact that he could help with Liam whose shoulder he had gripped. Elsa did not want to look at Liam. She didn't want to see the look on his face. Whatever it was, she knew it would be terrible.
Eventually Belle pulled herself together long enough to allow both herself and Elsa to listen in on what Regina was saying.
Back to the Enchanted Forest.
Back to corsets and unpredictable magic, no peanut butter, no vodka, no tampons. No TV or any decent reading material. No jeans.
Forever.
Elsa had never wanted to go back to the Enchanted Forest. Especially as she had no idea what had happened to Arendelle. Knowing her luck she'd stumble across Hans and Anna and Kristoff ruling together in some strange three-way as that bloody reindeer tracked crap across the wooden floors. Not to mention the whole debacle where her sister had been the one who had put her in the urn because she was scared she had magic.
That was potentially going to be very awkward.
She found herself at the town line gripping Liam's hand watching Henry and Emma escape while they all paid the price. If she never had to live through another curse again it would be too soon. She had once again lost her home and her security and she had once again had to sacrifice everything. It was so soul-destroying, so exhausting and it never seemed to stop. They had lost their old lives, regained a new normal and now they were going back to a place where life and death was as simple as catching a cold. All because of Neverland, of Pan, of not predicting that he would do something like this. Granted she was as guilty as the rest of them but as she saw Emma get into her car she noted with a wry frustration that she was getting everything she had ever wanted out of this deal and they were getting nothing. No new memories, no happy ending. Nothing.
The purple smoke was upon them and she gripped Liam's hand. If she was back in that blue dress she was not going to be responsible for her actions.
The last thing she felt was Liam squeezing her hand back.
And then…nothing.
Storybrooke. After The Missing Year
Liam woke up wincing at the harsh sunlight. He was sure he was supposed to be in the Enchanted Forest but now he was back in his old living room sprawled over the couch. It was exactly the same as he had left it this morning. The only thing that was missing was all the food in the fridge. It was like it had been cleaned out, other than that…everything, even to his boots on the floor were still the same. He was still wearing the same clothes.
He turned back from the kitchen expecting to see Elsa come out from the bedroom. He went to check but…everything was there, everything even her make up brushes scattered across the dressing table and her scarf across the mirror.
Her phone was still on the bed. Liam was not sure if she'd had hers on it when they had gone to the town line or if alongside everything else it had been brought back with the…well whatever this was.
His own was buzzing. It was Killian and Liam answered it unable to get rid of the terrible feeling that was in his stomach.
He didn't know what had happened.
He didn't know why Killian was in New York (though he suspected it might have something to do with Emma Swan)
But he knew deep down, one thing and with every second he knew it to be true.
Elsa was gone.
And there you are, I hope you enjoy this chapter and I hope to bring you the next one as soon as possible. I hope you all enjoy this one.
Next Chapter-In which Killian brings back Emma, Killian and Liam reunite. There is no sign of Elsa, Robin Hood appears and there is as small insight into the missing year.
