Chapter Six
~Third Person Point of View~
Several weeks past and Will's hearing did not improve. He got used to reading people's lips and watching their faces for emotions and feelings. He missed listening to music with Penny or even hearing the Robot's very deep voice. At first the Robinsons would tear up when they saw him which made him feel uncomfortable and unwanted but they stopped when Dr. Smith told them that he couldn't stand it. He could not bear it.
It took patience, a lot of patience to realize that Will not longer wanted to spend time with the family but only Dr. Smith. It hurt John and Maureen to their core but they knew it was probably how Will coped. Every person coped in their own different way. Penny would listen to music, Judy would spend time with Don or bake with Maureen...
"Maureen, we're going to have to land on this planet right here." John pointed to a certain planet on the scope. His wife nodded waiting for him to go on. "We need to refuel so this will be the perfect place."
"All right, John, I'll go tell the kids."
~Dr. Smith's Point of View~
I never did forget what Will asked me three weeks ago. It made me sad but happy at the same time. Someone knocked on my cabin door. "Come in." Mrs. Robinson came in, with a small smile on her face.
"Dr. Smith, we're planning to land on a planet to refuel."
"Oh, all right."
"Could you tell Will?"
"It might do him some good for him to be on a planet again." I said, thinking of fresh air could do for the young boy. Maybe he would be a little happier.
Later that night, I kept my cabin door slightly open so I could hear if Will needed me. He had come to me for almost all of his problems now. Pain, heartache, schoolwork, or anything at all that was bothering him. He was too embarrassed to ask his parents, Major West or even the Robot. He had been great friends with the Robot but now he kept his distance. He did still talk to the family of course, he was just... I sighed thinking about him. Lately I hardly thought about myself anymore. Maybe I did turn a new leaf.
"Dr. Smith," A quiet whisper came to my ears. I sat up in my bed, to see Will standing there. I waved him over. He came to me, darkness underneath his eyes.
"You need to sleep," I said quietly. He sighed softly. "William." I grabbed the paper-pad that was always beside my bed and handed it to him. He wrote on it quickly.
'I'm worried about landing on the new planet.'
I bit my lip, swallowing hard. I wrote back to him: 'It will be all right. It will be good for you.'
'But I won't be able to hear anything. What if there are aliens?'
I laughed, shaking my head slightly. 'Your dad said there is none.'
'But there always are.'
'True' William was smart.
'Dr. Smith... you don't have to lie to me...' I raised my eyebrow.
'About what?'
'About me not getting my hearing back.' I lowered my eyes to the ground. There was always a possibility of him not getting his hearing back. But he might get it back. An equal chance.
"Look, Will, its an equal chance." I said, patting his shoulder comfortingly.
"Okay," My friend said with a shaky voice. "I trust you." It had been a long time since I heard his voice. It had also been a long time since someone said they trusted me.
