Major Crimes Mysteries
The Family McCoy
Chapter 10
Sharon watched as Cam, Wes and Myra walked in the door to Major Crimes. Following behind them was an officer from the reception area pushing a cart with their dinner on it. Even though Sharon had just wolfed down the food Andy had brought her, she jumped up from her desk to grab some pizza and salad. She was still famished since she barely ate since last night's dinner. Even then, she and Andy kept it light since heavy dinners no longer suited either of them.
"Hey Boss!" Myra called out to Sharon. "I have the interviews with the kids ready to go in the RACR room. Do you want us to move the party into there, so we can watch the interviews while eating dinner?"
"Myra, that is a great idea!" Sharon responded to her.
When Myra came back from setting everything up, she motioned for people to come into the room. Everyone stood up from their desks and moved into the RACR room. Myra had set the food up outside the room to ensure everyone could get a seat and not have it taken up by pizza boxes and salad trays. Myra had the video already set up to go.
Wes informed the group that these were five of Katey's friends that showed up to be interviewed. The school principal had asked who she had considered to be Katey's best friends to join Wes and Cami to talk about Katey. As the four girls and one boy had entered the room offered by the school, it was easy to tell that all had been crying. The school had made the announcement of the death of Katey roughly one hour before Wes and Cami had gotten to the school and it was easy to tell most students and faculty were taking it roughly. Before meeting with the group, Wes and Cami had decided to interview the kids together and to watch body language for any kids they might have to separate or bring downtown later.
As the video started, Wes, Cami and Myra were introducing themselves. After they finished, without prompting, each of the kids introduced themselves. Cami asked each of them their ages and what grade they were in, as well as how long they had known Katey. Each went around the circle again. Sadly, all had known Katey and gone to school together since they were in first grade.
"Do any of you know who would want to do this to the McCoy family?" Wes asked choosing his words carefully. Each proclaimed that Katey was an extremely popular student, and no one could understand why anyone would want to kill their entire family.
Cami looked sideways at the group and then at Wes not wanting to pussy foot around with these teens because, knowing teens, she knew they'd take over the interview. While she adored Wes as a partner, he never dealt with teens. Never had to raise them like she did, so she knew the games they could play if they thought it would keep them out of trouble. "Listen, did Katey have a boyfriend or an ex-boyfriend?" Without waiting for an answer, she added "Was Katey sexually active?" Cami wanted to see if there was a reason Katey was still up when she was killed unlike the rest of the house that had long been sleeping.
The group looked at each other with knowing looks wondering if they should tell on their friend. Stacy, a pretty, petite blonde, looked at the group and said, "Listen it isn't like she is going to get into trouble anymore." She looked at Cami and told Cami that Katey had several boyfriends in the past and had been sexually active for about a year.
Cami asked why Katey would get into trouble and Amelia looked at her with surprise. "Do you not know that Katey's mom was ferocious about Katey not dating until she was done with college? She was a control freak about it. Katey could barely go to a dance with a guy." Amelia told her and the group just shook their head in agreement.
Skye, another pretty, petite blonde with a tattoo of a butterfly on her wrist, looked at Wes and smiled demurely at him, which immediately made him uncomfortable. She wore a short midriff shirt with her cleavage showing. Skye bent down to give Wes a clearer view of her cleavage. He shifted in his chair and was looking away and up at the ceiling. Cami could be seen almost giggling openly at what was happening in front of her. If it wasn't for the investigation, Cami almost would have let Skye continue her flirting with Wes and his feeble attempts to redirect what was clearly a wild fifteen-year-old. Instead, Cami asked Skye what her thoughts were on the situation.
As the team watched Skye's behavior and Wes' reaction, they couldn't help but laugh hysterically at his level of discomfort. "Hey Wes, ya know she is jailbait?" Robby said jokingly while taking a bite of his pizza. Amy added to the ribbing by telling Wes that while they made a cute couple, he might have to wait three years to date her or risk prison. Wes with each comment would turn a deeper shade of red.
When the group started joking with Wes, Myra had turned off the video. It was too good not to let the ribbing continue. All found it gave the atmosphere a bit of levity compared to where they were earlier in the day.
Skye told the group that Katey had just broken up with her old boyfriend to start to date a new guy who was in college. "How did Katey's parents take that?" Cam asked Skye. At that point, Skye sat up and her demeanor changed. "Are you kidding? There is no way Katey would have told her parents about David. They would have killed her. She had to be this perfect little princess. I love Katey, but let's be serious. Katey did the work and played her parents game, but she was no princess and she liked herself that way. Katey was fierce. Katey was going far in life. She knew what needed to be done and could do it. But she still knew who she was as a person and she juggled that life without disappointing her parents." The group looked at Skye and agreed with her.
"Do you know David's full name?" Wes asked the group. Skye sighed with almost felt like disgust as she was sitting up in her chair clearly no longer enthralled with Wes and looking at him as though he was her grandfather, "Detective, no one bothers with full names anymore."
"How did they meet?" Cami asked Skye. "They met at a club" a voice came out from nowhere. Marisol, whom all said was Katey's best friend, spoke up. She had been quiet while the rest of the group spoke, but finally gathered enough nerve to talk. "They met at a club." Marisol said a bit louder. "She had gone to a club with Skye. Skye had gotten her a fake ID and they used them to sneak into a club." Marisol started crying again. Devin, the lone male of the group, put his arm around Marisol and she leaned into him.
"What can you tell me about David?"
Skye was the first to speak up. "He was gorgeous. He was tall, thin with the most piercing blue eyes. He had the most beautiful shade of blonde hair that matched those blue eyes you could get lost in. I tried to hit on him at the club and steal him away from Katey. He only had eyes for her. Didn't even know I was alive. Katey already had Jessie. I don't know why she even entertained David except for that he was a college student. The second David wanted to be with her though. Jessie was gone."
"So how did Jessie take it?" Cami asked. Devin answered her "He didn't care. From what he told me, they were really only about sex. Katey couldn't date, so it wasn't like she could take him home to meet the Mommy and Daddy. She had met his mom and dad, but he was pissed that he couldn't be introduced to her parents. Normally, they would meet somewhere just to have sex. Ya know, more of like a friend with benefits. In high school that is easily replaceable, so Jessie didn't care. He is already dating someone else, and they consider themselves to be a real couple."
"How long ago did this happen?" Wes asked. Devin told them it was about a couple of weeks before.
With that, the interview ended, and the detectives let the kids know they would get back in touch with them if needed. After the kids left, Wes and Cami asked the principal if they could speak with Jessie. A few minutes later, they heard "Jessie Parkers to the principal's office please" over the loudspeaker.
After that, the screen went dark due to Myra turning off the camera.
Myra clicked off the interview and clicked on the next one with Jessie Parkers.
Wes and Cam introduced themselves to him and asked if they could ask him a couple of questions. "Sure, OK." Jessie responds.
They ask about his relationship with Katey, and he confirms what Katey's friends told them. Wes then asked what Jessie was doing the night of the murders. Jessie explained that he was one of the leads in the upcoming play, Carousel, at the local playhouse and was at play practice all night. Wes, Cami and Myra all looked at each other knowing this interview was done.
Just before turning off the camera, Cami asked if Jessie knew anyone who would want to kill the family. If someone hated the family so bad, they would want to take out an entire family including two very young kids. Jessie stated he didn't and said that the break-up if you could call it that since they were never officially a couple, was amicable. He said that Katey's friends would have a deeper knowledge of the family, but Wes and Cami already knew they didn't know anything more than Jessie did.
With that, Jessie was excused to go back to class and Myra clicked off the camera.
Myra turned the lights back up.
"Anyone have any ideas?" Sharon asked.
"Well that wasn't as fruitful as what we hoped." Wes mentioned. "We need to figure out who David is. Hang out at the club where they met?" Wes asked.
"I'll check out Katey's Facebook page. Maybe see if that will help us to identify this David character or someone who looks like him." Mike said.
"Sounds good, Mike." Sharon said. She turned to Andy. "Andy, did Rebecca's boss say anything to you about any toes Rebecca may have stepped on?" Sharon asked. "No, quite the opposite." Andy responded. "She told me Rebecca was well liked in her office. While she started taking on higher priced listings, she mentored several new agents in the office. Sort of a paying it forward thing."
"What about Dr. McCoy? Anything with him." Sharon asked. "Nothing." Provenza responded. "According to the office staff, Dr. McCoy was well loved. We had a chance to talk to his partner, Dr. Collins. He was well loved by his patients. What do we have here? A family of saints murdered? What are we missing?" Provenza continued.
"Well, that's funny." Buzz responded. "When I spoke with Dr. McCoy's father, he told Amy and I that Dr. McCoy was having issues with his partner and was investigating joining a health system as an employed physician."
Both Provenza's and Flynn's eyes widened. "Well, what do we have here? A possible motive? Flynn, looks like you and I are heading back to speak to the partner." Provenza said. "Better yet, let's bring him in for a formal interview. Maybe shake him up a bit." Andy replied.
With that, Sharon indicated that they were wrapping for the night.
"Tomorrow is the autopsies. Lieutenant, I would like you to meet Andy and I at the morgue please." Sharon said. Provenza shook his head indicating he understood. "I'd like the rest of you to continue to dig deep into the backgrounds of our victims and potential suspects. There must be something we are missing. This family must have some secrets we are missing. No family is this perfect." Sharon said looking off into the distance as she often did when trying to figure things out in her mind. She found herself truly perplexed. It was the first time she was this unsure about her surroundings since she worked the Dwight Darnell murders.
