Major Crimes Mysteries

The Family McCoy

Chapter 13

As Sharon returned to the murder room, she met Provenza and Andy in the hall just outside Major Crimes. Andy looked at her with the smile that never ceased to warm her heart and make her melt. "Well, we've had a productive day, how about you?" Andy asked her. "I have had a great day, gentlemen. The autopsies revealed a lot about the death of Rebecca McCoy." Andy stepped ahead of Sharon to ensure he opened the door for her. She smiled at him as she walked through. Before he had a chance to step in front of Provenza to follow Sharon in, Provenza sped up his pace and smiled at Andy as he held the door. "Such a gentleman, Flynn." Provenza told him and then followed the comment with an eyeroll. Andy stared up to the heavens and the bickering between the two best friends started. Sharon could do nothing but laugh because she knew trying to break up the bickering was futile.

"Awesome, everyone is here." Sharon exclaimed. "I didn't expect this. Let's get down to discussing what everyone learned today." Wes and Cami went first. They discussed meeting with a couple more of Katey's friends but didn't learn anything more about her new boyfriend than the other group had told them. Mike followed that up by letting the team know that he found no one by the name of David in her phone, but that the phone was full of numbers of friends, both male and female. "Any that looked like they had been recently added, Mike" Sharon asked. "No. that is the odd thing." Mike told Sharon. "Funny thing too boss, we can account for all the names in the phone. Mike asked us to check them out and all contacts trace back to Katey's known friends." Cami added to the conversation. "Well, this is really weird." Sharon pondered how a teen would hide a phone number, but the ideas that she was coming up with had already been checked by the team. The only advice she could give them was to keep pushing that there had to have been something they were missing.

Sharon proceeded to tell the group about the injuries done to the family members and that the spit found on Rebecca's shoulder had been sent out for testing. The team all agreed that it appeared Rebecca was the target of the murderer, and the family was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Andy, Lieutenant, what happened at the doctor's office?" Sharon asked. "Not to throw a potential wrench in our theory right now, Commander, but as we did a deeper dive into the good doctor's relationship with his partners, we found it wasn't all paradise." Provenza told the team. He continued. "It appears as though the doctor was looking to leave the practice and sell his portion of it. One of the partners told us that one doctor wasn't thrilled with it and wanted to buy Doctor McCoy out. With the good doctor dead, his portion of the practice is divided among the remaining partners."

Sharon reflected on what Provenza was telling her. "You know Lieutenant, if it was just Doctor McCoy dead, I could see this as a theory, but are we to believe that a doctor wiped out an entire family including young children to get his hands on the doctor's portion of the practice?" Andy spoke up with that comment. "We've seen worse." Andy told the group. "It just doesn't make sense." Sharon told him. "Plus" she continued. "The doctor had a simple gunshot wound to the head. It was Rebecca McCoy who had her face destroyed and was killed with a knife wound to the heart. I still say that Rebecca McCoy was the target and that we are barking up the wrong tree with the doctor's partner." Andy shrugged his shoulders and shook his head at her final comments on the subject. Andy knew his wife was smart. He knew it from almost the moment she came into Major Crimes that she had detective's blood in her. Sharon had Andy's respect the second she figured out the robbers of the grocery stores had to have insight into LAPD FID processes that she alone had put into place. No other police department in the United States had in place about keeping suspects at the scene of a police involved shooting meaning it had to be one of their own or a relative of one of their own committing the robberies. He knew given time she would fit into and run the Major Crimes unit beautifully. What he didn't know at the time is how hard he would fall for a woman he had despised at one time.

"So, we have funerals in a couple of days. Dr. Morales released the bodies to the funeral home after I left. Mike and Myra, can you please make sure that we have everything ready to go with the mobile unit?" Sharon asked them. Both shook their heads yes and Myra gave an extra thumbs up to ensure she understood the command. "The rest of us will continue to do a deep dive into the family and see what we are missing. Cami and Wes, please go to the homes of Katey's friends, particularly her ex-boyfriend, and see if the parents will allow us to take a buckle swab, it is a long shot, but at least we are covering bases. Jason Walkmire said he saw a youngish man leaving entering and leaving the home. Maybe, just maybe, the boyfriend didn't take the breakup as well as he reported to us he did.

With that the team broke up for the evening to set to work the next day on finding who would want to kill the McCoy family.
