Major Crimes Mysteries
The Family McCoy
Chapter 16
Sharon removed the crime scene tape that covered the door to the McCoy home and stepped inside. She went to turn on the lights in the house, but as she flipped the switches, the lights wouldn't come on. She assumed the utilities to the home had been shut off since the murders. Sharon turned on the flashlight on her phone and stepped down into the foyer.
Something grabbed her attention and she looked up the stairs. The light was on in one of the bedrooms upstairs. Sharon cautiously climbed the stairs to see if someone was in the house with her. She turned out the flashlight on her phone and pulled out her gun just in case it was needed.
As she got to Katey McCoy's room, she saw Katey sitting up in her bed with a clear gunshot wound to her head. Katey blinked her eyes slowly several times. "Katey, who did this to you?" Sharon asked her. Katey continued to blink her eyes slowly and didn't respond to Sharon. All of a sudden, Katey lifted her arm and pointed out the door. Sharon turned slowly and saw a shadow dart across the dark hallway.
Sharon stepped out to the hallway and tried to flip on the hallway light, but the lights, with the exception of Katey's room, still would not go on. She held herself close to the wall, moving down slowly, her eyes trying to adjust to the dark again after leaving Katey's room.
Sharon stepped into Beth's room. She saw Beth sleeping peacefully. As she approached Beth, Beth's eyes snapped open for a brief moment. Beth stared at Sharon without saying a word before slowly closing them again. "Beth, wake up." Sharon said to her. Sharon put her hand on the side of Beth's head and felt something oozing. She lifted up her hand and even in the dark of the room, she could tell her hand was covered in blood. Sharon felt a scream stuck in her throat. She wiped the blood on her new Burberry coat not caring about the cost. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the shadow dart across the doorway, and she turned to chase it. When she got out into the hall, the shadow was gone. Both rooms to the last two doors were closed and she didn't hear anyone run down the stairs.
Sharon walked slowly to baby Michaela's room and turned the door handle slowly. She could hear a child laughing inside the door. As she opened the door, Sharon saw Michaela jumping on her bed and giggling. She stared in amazement at what she was seeing and smiled at the sweet innocence of this baby girl. Sharon closed her eyes for a second and when she opened them, Michaela was laying in her bed with the pillow that had a clear bullet hole in it. Like when they found her, the covers pulled up to Michaela's shoulders. Sharon wiped her eyes, but the baby stayed in the same position.
Sharon stepped into the hall perplexed by what she had been seeing. Maybe Andy was right she thought to herself. Maybe she needed to speak with Dr. Joe. She had to admit she was starting to hallucinate. That could be the only explanation for what was going on. As she was pondering her next move, Sharon saw the shadow dash down the stairs. Sharon quickly followed it down the stairs not thinking of her safety.
As she got to the bottom of the stairs, she came face to face with a figure dressed all in the black. She couldn't see the face of the person standing in front of her due to the hoody covering its face.
"Show yourself." Sharon screamed at it and lifted her gun. The person's hand raised slowly to remove the hood. Standing in front of her was Rusty. "Rusty what are you doing here?" Sharon asked incredulously. She lowered her gun. A smile slowly crept across his face. "I did it Sharon. It felt so good. I killed them all. Shot them. You never thought I would become a serial killer, but I did. It was in my blood, Sharon. You kept trying to tell me it wasn't, but you were wrong. It was such an amazing feeling to watch the life drain out of them. Just for kicks, I took my time with Rebecca McCoy. God, there is no feeling like it, Sharon. Had I have known Wade Weller had this great of a time, I would have done this a long time ago." Rusty told her.
Sharon lifted her gun again and pointed it at Rusty. "Mom," Rusty said to her with sardonic tone, "do you think I'd ever hurt you. I love you." At ending the sentence, Rusty lifted his gun at her.
Sharon heard a gunshot go off.
Sharon sat straight up in her bed and took in a deep breath not knowing where she was. As she gathered her wits, she noticed the sunlight streaming into her room. She turned to see where Andy was, and he was not in bed with her. She looked at the alarm clock and it read 6:15 am. She wondered where Andy was and went to look in the guest room. He wasn't there, but it was clear he slept in the bed last night.
She walked into the kitchen and Andy was standing there with a hot cup of coffee. He handed it to her, and she took a long swig off it ignoring its heat.
"Nightmare last night?" He asked her. She shook her head yes and started to cry. She proceeded to tell him about the nightmare. "Andy, I think I need to talk to Dr. Joe, but I am so scared." Sharon told him. "Babe, I told you a long time ago. You are never alone. It is what we will go through. I will always be there with you, but we need to address these nightmares." Andy told her.
Andy took Sharon in his arms, and Sharon completely melted down. Little did Andy know that with what she suspected, that might not be the truth.
