The Family McCoy

Chapter 23

Sharon dropped her things in her office and immediately went out to join the group at Mike Tao's desk.

"Commander, I learned this trick off of a Badge of Justice episode that I helped to write." Mike told Sharon.

Behind the group, groans from Andy could be heard. "Ah geez, Tao, Badge of Justice has been off the air for a couple of years now. Granted, you made out nicely, but is there a statute of limitations on how long we will have to hear about that show?" Flynn asked him.

"Andy, please." Sharon said emphatically. "Go ahead Mike."

Mike looked back at Andy and simply gave him a sly smile before turning back around to his computer screen and continuing his explanation.

"So, on the show, a person was hiding their identity. We needed to find what their true name was, so we researched all names that surrounded it by their birth records. Lo and behold, on the show, we found the suspect."

"You really think because something worked on a stupid tv show, it will work in real life, Mike?" Andy told him.

"Well, Andy, I think it did." Mike said without even turning around.

"So, Commander, when I searched birth certificates using Rebecca Parkey for the Sacramento area, I found no birth of sons in the record. I tried Rebecca McCoy and Rebecca Parkey throughout the whole state. But then I tried something different. I plugged in the name Becky Parkey and we had a name pop up. She gave birth to a son when she was seventeen. This fits with Rebecca's age at the time of her death. Here is the thing though, Commander. If it is her, she had the baby in a home birth in Los Angeles, not Sacramento." Mike said. She named the son, Tristan Roberts.

"How could her mother not know that?" Amy was the first to pipe up.

"Lots of girls have babies without their mother knowing, Amy. Let's not judge her or jump to conclusions before we know the full story. This may not even be the same person." Sharon told her. Amy cocked her head in understanding.

"You never know Amy, but I plan on finding out. Mike, before we call her, let's make sure it is the same Rebecca Parkey, OK?" Sharon said to the group. "Mike, you and Andy go and try to find the father listed on the birth records. Cami and Wes, try to look up the name of the son and see who he is."

Cami and Wes acknowledged Sharon's command and walked over to Wes's desk to start a DMV search. Tristan Roberts would now be almost twenty-three years old they deduced by the age on the birth certificate.

Mike and Andy did a search of the father's name, Eric Roberts and found three in the Los Angeles area. They developed a plan to go to each of them. Provenza printed off a picture of Rebecca McCoy to take with them. He decided to tag along because Sharon hadn't given him an assignment, and he didn't feel like waiting around for everyone to come back.

Buzz and Amy decided to research the midwife's name to see if she was still in practice. When they found she was still an active midwife, Buzz asked Sharon if he and Amy should go interview the midwife in case, she remembered anything about the home birth.

"Buzz, as usual, that is a fantastic idea. You and Amy go and talk to the midwife. "It is a longshot she will remember anything, but you never know." Sharon told him.

Provenza could be heard coughing "teachers' pet" into his hand directed towards Buzz. Buzz looked at him and rolled his eyes and gave his famous Buzz smirk to the Lieutenant.

"Let's meet back here in let's say four hours." Sharon told them. With that, Sharon turned and walked back into her office without saying goodbye to Andy. While the rest of the team didn't notice it, Andy did.

"Four hours, gentlemen" Provenza told Mike and Andy. "If we can get our interviews done in a timely manner, that leaves us plenty of time to go hit Feinman's Deli for lunch. There is a pastrami on rye sandwich with a big dill pickle with my name on it"

"You know Patrice isn't going to like that." Andy told him.

"What Patrice doesn't know won't kill her. Besides, eating this way makes me a better, less grumpy husband."

Right before everyone was set to leave the office to go on their assigned tasks, Wes and Cami, in unison, were heard saying "Holy Crap!".

"Hey, that's my line." Mike Tao reminded them and then walked over to Wes' desk to see what they were shocked about.

As he got behind them, he looked at the picture on Tristan Roberts driver's license photo and repeated their words "Holy Crap!"
