Crystal Rain

Chapter 15 - A Rocky Start

The next time she opened her eyes, a doctor was standing over her bedside table checking a monitor that was hooked up to her finger. "Your awake" a pleasant surprise in his voice, "Your brother was worried about you?" "My brother?" did she have a brother? she felt some truth to the words, but couldn't remember for sure.

Before she could search her spotty memories further the door to the room slid open and in stepped a tall man, his intimidating presence immediately having an effect on the atmosphere around them. The three men instantly stood up and bowed their heads , "Rocky, Koo." The man only nodded his head slightly but other than that made no recognition towards the men welcoming him into the room.

As he walked further into the room, she was able to observe him better. He walked with a cane in his right hand, but from the way he sauntered through the door he didn't need it for support. Around his left wrist he wore a pair of handcuffs, an odd choice of accessory. Red rounded lens classes sat over his eyes, that instead of hiding his foreboding stare just seemed to enhance it. A man, who must have been this Koo the others referred to, walked in behind Rocky. While he too was in all white he was the most normal looking out of all of them, slightly shorter than Rocky with short black hair that was neatly slicked back.

"How is she?" the man they called Rocky pointed at her with his cane. "One broken wrist, another sprained, humerus fracture, left hip fracture, a broken left tibia, dislocated right ankle and punctured lung, among other minor bruises, cuts, and strains. She'll probably have some permanent scaring as well" She listened to the doctor list off all her injuries, she may not remember anything but what ever accident she had gotten into certainly wasn't something small. Rocky just continued to stare. The doctor continued, "She seems to have also sustained heavy damage to the front parts of her brain specifically the amygdala and hippocampus." "What does that mean?" other than the doctor no one in the room understood these terms and the expression on their face was almost comical in their confusion if not masked by their interest and concern. "We won't know the full effects until we question her more but there's a high chance that her memory recall is damaged."

He then turned towards her, "Miss? What is your name?" "My name?" she stubbled around her brain for an answer. She clearly had one, she could perfectly comprehend speech, but why couldn't she remember her name or any name for that matter. "Crystal" Rocky spoke up, everyone looked to him as he in turn addressed the doctor, "Thank you, you can go now." "I really think I should stay and do some further preliminary tests." "It's fine, come back later, Koo go with him and settle financials." Koo escorted the doctor out and slide the door closed behind them.

Crystal? her name was Crystal? and this Rocky was her brother? She had no reason to doubt the name, but also no reason to trust the declaration either, they didn't even look remotely similar. Enari and Shimura once again helped her sit up, placing pillows behind her for support as Rocky came to sit at the edge of her bed. Taking off his glasses, his eyes switched from being unapproachable to one of sincerity while still maintains their initial fierce nature.

"My name is Rocky." before he could go further she cut him off in a hurry to get some answers of her own, "How do you know my name? Your really my brother? and how did I get here?" "Koo saw an explosion, you were the only one found alive at the scene. We believe you were chased by a group called Doubt." "Doubt?" "A scout gang near the coast who likes to focus on the exploitation of women and children for their own selfish gain" Koo had re-entered the room and just by the way he talked she could tell he had a higher touch of class than the way the others spoke, no doubt it was important to him.

Had she really been running away from someone trying to sell her? Were they still after her? She suddenly felt an itching in the pit of her stomach and a fight or flight response that seemed very familiar with her took hold of her. Koo, sensing her slight shift in behavior continued, "You are ok now. Your under our protection. When you are well enough to be dismissed you will come back to Club Haven with us as Rocky's special guest." She looked over at their boss who gave a small grin that showed his silver grilled teeth, though not as comforting as he probably meant it to be.

A small head node and thanks escaped her lips, she was still unsure if she could trust these people, but so far they had given her no cause to be suspicious. Koo continued, "We will help you find your home and you can stay at the club until you recover any concrete memories. Until then will call you Crystal?" "Why?" So Crystal wasn't her real name. "Because Rocky said" and with that he turned and stepped out of the door followed by Enari and Shimura. After taking one more look at her, Rocky stood up to follow the others out, "Get some rest, Bito stay and keep watch" and without another word he and Bito left the room. She could only make out Bito's shadow standing outside the door, so instead looked towards the sky outside the window as she thought about the information she'd just received and tried to make sense of any of it.

On their way down in the elevator Koo questioned Rocky, the only one that dared too. Continuing a conversation they had started on their way to the hospital, "Does she really remind you of your sister?" Rocky didn't even look towards him but instead closed the opened side of the hand cuffs he wore with a small click that synchronized with the opening of the elevator's doors. His gaze never wavering from his invisible target ahead, one could only imagine what might be going through his head as he stepped out and continued down the dark hallway and out of the clinic.
