Epilogue
Five Years Later….
"Mama! Auntie Lexie, have you seen my backpack? It's not where it should be."
Lexie Grey, heavily pregnant with her third baby, looked up from where she was sitting on the sofa to see Zola running down the stairs of their home. The once six-year-old girl had grown up into a beautiful eleven-year-old. She was in her first year of middle school, in the top of her class, president of the environmental science club, and was dreaming to become a surgeon just like her mother, father, aunt, and uncle.
"Try your Uncle Mark," Lexie replied as she placed the now finished cup of her morning tea on the coffee table. "He was in charge of packing everyone's lunches today."
"I got it, Zo-Zo!" Mark exclaimed as he came rushing into the room with several backpacks in hand and a little girl with blonde curls on his hip. "Not to worry!"
"Thanks," Zola told her uncle as he passed it off to her.
"Let's go!" the sound of two boys shouted as they came running down the hall. One looked very much like Derek and the other like Mark. Their laughter echoing throughout the home as they caused chaos wherever they went.
"No running!" Meredith scolded as she walked from behind them. A little girl of five that had her mother's hair and her father's eyes clung to Meredith's hand as she expressed her frustration with her older brother and cousin.
"Derek Bailey Shepherd and James Derek Sloan!" Lexie added from where she was seated. This caused the two of them to halt in their tracks. "Stop running in the house! I may be pregnant, but do not tempt me right now!"
"This place is very much a zoo," Amelia declared, putting her hands on her hips as she came down the stairs.
"You could always move out," Meredith pointed out dryly to Derek's little sister, who merely shrugged. "I would rather live with Maggie anyway! Maybe she'd keep this place neat!"
"Don't worry. Mark and I will be out of your hair in no time once this one comes around," Lexie muttered, holding her swollen stomach. "By then, the house should be done."
Since Meredith woke up from her coma, things got only more chaotic. Lexie found out she was pregnant with her and Mark's child not too long after the birth of Ellis. Of course, it was very early in the second round of their relationship, but it was oddly fitting for the couple.
They would go on to have James Derek Sloan. He had his mother's brown hair and his father's blue eyes. He was two years younger than Bailey, but the two managed to get into trouble all the time– reminding Mark of his own relationship with Derek.
Since then, they've been living with Meredith, which has worked out well for them. Amelia would even move in not too long after to give an extra hand with two small babies in the house. It was nice having Derek's sister around as well to bring the kids closer to their father.
Mark and Lexie would eventually get married about a year after James's birth. Mark would propose on their first anniversary as a couple. The night of their honeymoon, however, would lead to the arrival of their daughter, Susan Meredith Sloan. It was around that time that Mark and Lexie decided it might be time to create their own place as the home was starting to get crowded. To which, Meredith sold them part of the land so they could build a home basically right next door. This way, they'd be close by. Especially since the kids needed all of them. Meredith also had the help of Amelia Shepherd, who moved in, and the help of her new sister– Maggie Pierce, the daughter of Ellis and Richard.
They found out about Maggie almost two years after Meredith's coma. Meredith was not too keen about having a new sister. However, Lexie encouraged her to get to know Maggie. In fact, Lexie and Maggie got on along quite well being that they were kindred spirits.
"I'm going to miss you all living here with us," Zola pouted to her aunt.
"Aw, Zo-Zo, we'll only be next door," Lexie reminded her. "We're always around for you, sweetheart, promise."
"Around enough for us to see the new baby?" Zola asked, motioning to her aunt's stomach.
"Yes. I promise," Lexie said, pressing a kiss to Zola's head. "But for now, let's get to school because we are running very late."
"That is very true," Meredith echoed. "And I do have a pretty big surgery around ten, so we can't be late for that."
Things were tough for Meredith the first few months, especially without Derek. They were able to throw him a memorial for her to find some closure. However, since then, she's been back on track, trying to make sense of everything going on around her. She would still manage to become a superstar in the medical field and would only continue creating amazing developments. She was currently the head of general surgery while Miranda Bailey was elected Chief of Surgery.
"I think Dad's going to pick them up after school today," Lexie commented to her sister.
They also built a better relationship with Thatcher Grey. It was a surprise to both girls, but after some encouragement from Molly on both sides, it seemed to work. Now, Thatcher was heavily involved in his grandchildren's lives. Meanwhile, Molly and Eric were looking to move closer to the family in Seattle.
"Wait, are Jackson and April picking up the little kids from day camp?" Mark questioned as he interjected on the sisters conversation.
Jackson and April would go on to have a son– Samuel Norbert Avery. They also had a daughter recently, Harriet Catherine Avery. Along with them having a baby, Callie and Arizona decided to try having their own child. Callie would give birth to a little boy which they named Tim, after Arizona's brother.
Alex and Jo would also go on to get married. They would adopt a baby girl named Luna, who was the same age as Tim and Susan.
"No, that's Thursday," Lexie reminded him as she struggled to move herself off the sofa. "Today it's–"
"Me. I think," Amelia stated, scratching the back of her head.
"We'll figure it out on the way there, right now we are very late," Meredith stressed as she swooped Ellis in her arms and carried her on her hip.
"Let's go! Chop, chop troopers!" Mark exclaimed, gesturing towards the door.
"Don't worry, we're going," Amelia replied as she held the hands of the boys. Zola tagged along beside her mother as she told Meredith about her upcoming field trip.
"And how's my very pregnant wife doing?" Mark asked thoughtfully as he took a moment to press a kiss to Lexie's lips.
"Very tired, but also very excited to have a date night with her husband later this evening," Lexie said, causing Mark to grin as he pressed his lips to Lexie's once more. "That is, if you remembered."
"Of course I did," Mark replied lightly, pressing another kiss to the tip of her nose. "And as much as I'm looking forward to it, we better run before a car full of cranky children becomes our downfall."
Lexie laughed at this as she proceeded to walk hand-in-hand with her husband out the front door. As hectic as everything started out, thankfully, everything seemed to fall into perfect place.
