After a long shift, Street found himself once again in front of Molly's building. Having seen her that morning had both rattled him and given him hope. Especially after Chris had encouraged him more or less direct to go and solve this, but he couldn't help but be nervous.
His palms were slightly sweaty, and he tried to dry them on his pants before pressing the doorbell for Molly's unit. The seconds ticked by, and nothing happened. Dejected, he pulls out his phone, contemplating calling her, but there was that tiny voice in his head, if she doesn't open the door maybe she doesn't want to see me right now.
He lets the phone slide back into his pocket and turns to head back to his bike, a few parking spaces down the road. After a few steps he hears familiar voices coming out of the newly opened door of the building.
"I'll always be here if you need me, okay?" "Thanks, for hearing me out. I needed that," "Always, and what are you going to do now?"
Jim had stopped walking and slowly turned back around. He couldn't deny he was interested in that answer too. He looked from Molly's surprised expression to Kira's surprisingly friendly smile and back.
Watching as Kira pulls Molly into a hug and whispers something that suspiciously sounded like "Guess someone had the same idea," into her ear before walking of with a small wave.
Molly stares a little insecure at her hands. Was he really here to see her? Her swirling thoughts get interrupted by a soft "Hey," from Jim, and she lifts her eyes to see him smile softly at her.
"Hey," is her reply.
They stand there a few feet apart, awkwardly smiling at each other until Molly starts again.
"I was just on my way to see you," she trails off and gestures to him.
"Me too, but you didn't open the door, and I thought I'd leave. Give you more time."
"Guess we were already on the way down. Do you want to come up? So, we can talk?" Molly offers and moves to turn back but Jim reaches for her hand. "Or maybe we could take a walk?"
He smiles relieved when Molly nods and even lets him intertwine their fingers.
They walk a little while in comfortable silence just enjoying each other's company.
"Listen Jim, I was serious when I said you have a right to your past and I am not holding that against you, but I want to be honest: I am scared, jealous even." Molly starts quietly.
Jim stops walking and squeezes her hand. "Jealous? Why?"
Molly hangs her head, but she knows this is it. The moment she had to be honest. Wasn't this admission the reason she had called Kira?
She feels Jim tug on her hand and she slowly lifts her eyes.
"I, look, remember what I told you after the gallery? About how I asked Chris about you?" she waits for him to nod. "When you just ghosted me the last few weeks I went to her again. I just, I thought, maybe hoped she knew what was going on. I expected her to tell me we are over, but she didn't. And when those pictures showed up…" Molly trails off again and Jim would swear he heard a shaken sob escape her lips.
He squeezes her hand and pulls her a little closer again, after Molly had taken a couple of steps away from him.
"Molly, again that was nothing. That was work," he repeats forcefully but Molly holds up a hand to stop him.
"Have you even looked at the photos? The way you look at her…" Molly stops herself one more time and after a deep breath her voice is even again.
"I called Kira and we talked, because in a weird way she was the only one that could help me with my feelings in this situation," a small smile shows up on her lips. "Jim, I do realize you can't help the feelings you have for your friend. I believe you if you tell me that's all that is there, but I need you to be honest. If there is more, than we need to end this and go our separate ways. No harm done. But I can't do this sharing thing. And yes, I am jealous and scared of the connection you have with Chris. You are so close, and yes I knew that when we first started but I just…"
Jim furrows his brows. What is she trying to say? What is the right answer here? This was absolutely not how he pictured this going after Molly had been at HQ to talk to Chris.
"What are you saying? Do you want me to stop seeing Chris privately?" he asks in disbelief and Molly shakes her head.
"No, that's not what I am trying to say. And I would never ask that I just… I don't know. I just feel like I am not important enough in your life."
Now that that was out Molly pulls back her hand leaving Jim reeling at the loss of contact and the force of the meaning behind those words.
Now he had made her feel she wasn't important anymore. Could he fix this?
In a spur-of-the-moment decision, he grabs Molly's shoulders.
"Molly, I know these past few weeks were horrible. But please, don't believe I did that because you aren't important. I needed to pretend we were over so I could do my job and keep you safe at the same time. God, I missed you so much. I wanted to hear your voice, reach out, see you, hug you," he rambles on and just pulls her into his arms. "But I couldn't. I had to keep you at a safe distance, and I know now that this was maybe the wrong decision but I couldn't fight your father in matters of your security, and I had to help my brother."
He pulls back slightly to study her face and his thumbs softly wipe away a few stray tears.
"I'll do anything in my power to make it up to you. If you let me," he whispers before placing a kiss to her forehead.
Molly closes her eyes for a moment savoring that moment. And revels in the sweet gesture.
Her breath hitches a little when Jim whispers. "I can't lose you. I love you" to her ear and hugged her close.
Okay, I think I am going to end this here. Everyone can imagine now what they want... did the rest of Season 3/4 happen or not :)
