Dawn came too quickly for both Charley and Elizabeth. Fog was thick, covered for miles, the aftermath of the storm that gave a fight. The ocean grew wild, and rough, causing it to attack the ships that sailed upon it. The sky rumbled with anger, and released lighting bolts upon the earth below. However, that morning, the ocean was grey but calm, as if tamed, yet they all knew the water was unpredictable; reflecting the sky above.
On deck, the crew were preparing to leave the Pearl, and to row for the Isle Murta. A place that Charley had seen more than she would like. Her eyes took in all the treasures that the pirates had taken over the ten years. The years of hoarding looked unbelievable. Many would crave to take what they had, to spend what they took, to live the rich life for a while. However, Charley, did not crave such things. She craved for a life she knew she could not have. A life that was far away from her grasp. Destroyed that night Sam left the world, Charley thought sadly. Peace. Love. She believed that was freedom. The words she expressed to Sam, turned bitter. Her heart froze with fear. Coldness grew within. Chains locked around her wrists. Scars burned upon her skin. Eyes followed her everywhere. Her actions and words tested. Freedom not to be seen. Maybe death was the only way out of this hell.
A feeling of discomfort creeped within Charley, as she stood next to Elizabeth. They were both chained, but the reason of feeling uncomfortable, was the handful of eyes that was upon them. She glanced over to Elizabeth, and detected the same look that she had once tried to hide.
"I apologise, for stealing your books." Charley whispered to the young lady. "If it's any comfort to you, the books look an interesting read. Beats these lot company." The young lady moved her gaze upon Charley, and expressed her confusion. Letting out a sigh, Charley hoped it would have eased both of their minds. However, they both knew what was in their path, making fear grip their hearts.
"Which one do ye think, Twigg?" Charley heard Koehler ask, turning Charley's attention upon them.
"The girl pure and beautiful." Twigg replied, before his greedy eyes landed upon Charley. "Yet, Charley, would be fun in the sheets."
Charley frowned with disgust as the two pirates laughed. Feeling another pair of eyes upon her, Charley turned her gaze again to her left and realised Elizabeth was staring at her, showing sympathy and disgust.
"Heard Ragetti has already had the pleasure of knowing her."
"Oh? Then she be beggin' for our company." Koehler added.
She tried to ignored them. To mark her feelings, yet she felt her blood boil within, while her heart
raced in its cage, as if begging to be released.
"Ah, don't be shy, little bird." Twigg stated, before stood in front of her. "This is the night, where we
repay each other." Swiftly, he reached out and chubbed her chin. "Ye release us from this curse, and I show ye what I can do in the sheets."
Charley jerked her head back, and showed the fire she felt within. She saw the smirk of satisfaction,
greed and lust upon the man's face. She spat towards him, however, he stepped away. He looked
down upon it, before he swung his hand to slap her face, yet a hand came out of nowhere and
grabbed his wrist and their attention.
"There won't be any need of that, Master Twigg." Barbossa stated, before his eyes landed upon
Charley. "The girl has learned what will happen to her if she steps out of line."
Charley could taste the metallic in her mouth, realising she was biting down upon her tongue.
However, as she heard a growl, she moved her gaze down to near her knees, where she found Bert,
and allowed herself to smile. "And Bert, here knows how to tear men's faces." She stated threatening, before spitting out the
blood.
A few tensed silence went by, before Charley watched as Barbossa, released Twigg's wrists
and walked away. Slowly, Twigg followed, leaving her alone with Elizabeth and Bert. She allowed
herself to let out a heavy sigh, before crouching down to Bert, who turned to his master and licked
Charley's face, then to rub his face against her neck. "Good boy! Trust you to be there, when I need
you."
"Is he yours?" Charley heard Elizabeth ask.
"Aye. Picked him up in a town and since then we are team. " She replied, while standing up. "Loyal to no one, but me. So, it's a good thing I like you."
...
Gold, jewels and other riches filled the cave. A strange place to horde such things, it came with secrecy, ghosts and blood, isolated from preying eyes and itchy hands. Trunks were carried and emptied onto piles of jewels, goblets melted in gold, pockets full of coins. Hands felt the value, while their eyes showed their greed and lust. Ten years of hoarding, stealing and today their curse will be broken, Charley thought, as she surveyed her surroundings, before she was pushed to move along. They will be the truly richest pirates.
Movement caught her attention, forcing her to pause and stare to her left. Anger gripped hold of her, as she saw Koehler opening a sack, before a pile of books fell out. The books she stole from Elizabeth's house. "Oi!" She exclaimed, before she could stop herself. Anger had controlled her, forcing her to storm over. However, a heavy hand landed upon her shoulder. She shrugged it off by force, before continuing to storm towards Koehler. "They're mine."
"Now they are ours." Koehler stated, while throwing the empty sack away. "They must be worthy for you to hold them."
"But they are the only things I have. You have everything else." Charley felt her right hand grab hold the hilt of her sword. Her hold grew tighter upon the hilt, as Charley saw Koehler smile. In a swift movement, Charley released her sword from its scabbard, however before she make a move, a hand welcomed itself around her wrist and pulled her away. She tried to push the strong hand away, yet it squeezed tighter. A few seconds later, Charley found herself upon the floor. The force of the push, made a few coins scatter. Many eyes were upon her, but she did not dare. I hate them all. With that thought in mind, Charley pushed her dark hair out of her eyes, and stood back up, before brushing her clothes with her hands. A shadow fell upon her, causing her to look up to face Bo'sun, who expressed his disgust, while holding his hand out, Charley frowned in confusion, but watched his eyes wander to her sword. Letting out a sigh, Charley gave him her sword.
Folding her arms, Charley watched as Elizabeth was walked near the chest, which she knew held eight hundred and one medallions, which led the men's greed and a curse upon them. Standing at the front of the gathered pirates, Charley could detect the fear that filled the young woman's eyes.
"Gentleman, the time has come. Our salvation is neigh! Our torment is near at end." Barbossa addressed his crew. "For ten years we've been tested and tied, and each man lack of you have proved his mettle a hundred times and a hundred times again."
The cave erupted into a cheer, before Ragetti stated: "Suffered I have." Making Charley glance over
to him.
"Punished we were. The lot of us. Disproportionate to our crimes! Here it is." Barbossa continued, before kicking the lid of the chest off. "The cursed treasure of Corte's himself. Every last piece that went astray, we returned...save for this." He pointed to Elizabeth's neck, where the last medallion laid. "Eight hundred and one we found, but deprived of ever finding the last. And who among us has paid the blood sacrifice owned to the heaven gods?"
"Us!" The crew exclaimed.
"And whose blood must yet be paid?"
"Hers!"
Charley watched cautiously, as Barbossa turned his head to speak to Elizabeth, before smiling. Fear grew within her brown eyes of Elizabeth's, while the captain held the dagger. "Hold on." Charley heard herself say. Many eyes were again fell upon her, but her mouth seemed to
move. "Why does she have to endure this, for the greed for men? She is the most innocent person here. You had my blood for a long time, yet you use hers. But how do you know she is the blood you need?" However, silence followed her words. "Well I was only voicing my opinion...no crime in that." Charley added, while rolling her eyes and folded her arms across her chest.
"Began by blood...by blood undone." Barbossa stated, as if he was not interrupted. He grabbed hold of Elizabeth's wrist and forced her hand to face up; bearing her palm, in which he led the dagger across. A gasp was released from Elizabeth's mouth, as he cut her palm, before forcing it shut and face the chest. The medallion was covered in her blood as it was dropped into the chest. An eerie silence passed through the cave.
"Did it work? Koehler asked.
"I don't feel no different." Ragetti added.
"How do we tell?" Pintel asked.
Charley jumped as the echo of a pistol fired. Her eyes glued upon Pintel, who then stood frozen for a few seconds with a bullet hole in his chest.
"You're not dead." Koehler stated the obvious.
"No." Pintel said, before he pointed a finger at his captain. "He shot me."
"It didn't work." Ragetti stated annoyed.
"The curse is upon us." Twigg exclaimed.
Charley quickly looked back up at Elizabeth, who had watched the whole scene in silence. Tension blew around the cave, making Charley wished she had her sword, she owed nothing to the young woman, but she alone and did not know what she was dealing with. Barbossa turned and grabbed her in anger; desperate to get rid of the curse.
"Your father, what was his name? Was your father, William Turner?"
"No." She replied, allowing herself to smile.
"She outsmarted you all!" Charley stated proudly.
"Where's his child?" The child that sailed from England Eight years ago. The child in whose veins
flows the blood of William Turner. Where?"
Shock prevented Charley from making any kind of movement, as she watched Elizabeth tumble backwards, due to the force of the hit by Barbossa. Swiftly, she gained control of her body, as Charley took a step forward, she felt the eyes of the Captain's, as if daring her to speak, or to fight. So he could take his rage on someone. Someone he could kill.
"We still 'ave the Little Birds, blood." Charley heard Twigg state. She felt paralysed as eyes were back upon her. She was defenceless, weak and mortal. Three things that the crew preyed upon. Her thoughts were frozen. Her heart raced.
"Her blood is not worthy." The simple words seemed to have been sharp, as it cut through the eerie silence. Confusion erupted through the cave. Charley took the time to stare back up at Barbossa and expressed what his crew exclaimed.
"What do ye mean?" Koehler asked.
"Ye brought us here for nothing." Twigg stated angrily.
"I won't take questioning and second guesses. Not from the likes of you, Master Twigg." Barbossa
addressed the man, annoyed.
"Whose to blame? Every decision you've made, has led from bad to worse."
"It was you, who sent Bootstrap to the depths, and shot Jed. " A pirate recalled.
"And it was you who brought us here in the first place." Bo'sun added.
Charley recollected herself. Her mind attacked by the whirlwind of thoughts. Questions formed, but they had no answer. She lowered her gaze to stare at her hands. "Her blood is not worthy." Echoed around in her mind. Years she had been forced to live on a ship, to be tormented, punished and shackled, to seem for no reason at all. Her father was apart of the crew. They needed his blood, as Well as bootstraps to be released from the curse. The girl lied to save her town. But what of her own blood?
"If any coward here dare challenges me, let him speak. Hmm?"
"Aye. I got a question." Charley heard herself say. "What the hell, do you mean by my blood not being worthy? You kidnapped me. Forced me to inhabit the ship. I won't forget to mention, the lack of manners for the past five years." She paused, as she realised the pistol the Captain held, pointed towards her. She saw annoyance and anger expressed upon his face, yet Charley, found herself speaking again. "Could have killed me, during then to now. Yet you still point that pistol at me. Why?"
"Jed's blood runs through her veins." A pirate stated. The crew were still confused and angry. Unsure what to do. They had waited for ten years for that moment. To have their bodies and souls back. To escape the curse they afflicted upon themselves.
"The medallion." Barbossa stated, causing everyone's attention back towards him. "She's taken it. Get after her. Ye feckless pack of integrates!"
The crew quickly moved their way towards the rowing boats, in which left Charley stand alone. She took the time to stare at Barbossa, who had put his weapons away, yet he did not meet his gaze.
None of this makes any sense, Charley told herself. Years held as a prisoner for the purpose to end the curse, but all that time, she was worthless. Why lie? Why make all the effort of kidnapping me and holding me on board?
"I don't understand." She stated clearly. "Why? My father was apart of the crew, before you killed him, was he not?"
However, silence followed her questions, as Barbossa walked down from the rock he stood upon. Anger and confusion intertwined within Charley, she took a step forward. She wanted answers. But she realised the captain's attention was caught by something, which Charley followed his gaze, to see the crew were gathered around . Curiosity filled Charley, making her walk towards the crowd. She pushed herself through, yet paused as her eyes took in the details of a man. A man she had not seen, or heard of for the past six years. "Jack?" Charley called.
