Selena reached the old ruins of a beautiful garden that once belonged to a Noble thousands of years ago. She discovered it a few years ago in her travels. It was a peaceful place, which reminded her of her parents. Rampage needed rest and she needed to find shelter from the sun as it would be too much for her to travel under.
It didn't take long for her to find shelter. Finding an Ancient Oak Tree in which its trunk was hollow and loose black dirt, digging a hollow grave. Selena looked out at the scenery.
"Selena…the carriage and the girl are here" Dust informed
She was sitting on one of the benches looking out at the view, what once was. While her feet submerged in the cool water.
Charolette noticed her a small gasp of surprise echoed as she immediately stood up.
"You…you're the Red Huntress"
Selena stood silent
"Has my father sent you as well?"
"No…She is not to be trusted"
"Who?"
"The Blood Countess…"
Suddenly the heaviness of her heart eased at the scent of D and she felt like she could breathe again as her violet silver eyes turned to his imposing figure.
"Charolette…"
Charolette turned to see the cloaked figure, with a wide brimmed travelers hat protecting him from the sun. Yet she could see his features clearly. A man of indescribable beauty. He looked like some gorgeous idol of a god of war trimmed in crimson lotus blossoms.
"I am D. The Hunter. Your father sent me. Don't be afraid"
She could hear Charolette's heart rate increase as she took a few steps back
"You sit in the sunlight. You must not be changed, so why do you stay with him. Last night in the carriage you called out his name. Why did you call for him?"
Charolette looked away, Selena could see it in her eyes. Love.
"I suppose my father has not told you that I'm in love with Meier"
"You don't know who he is. You can't be in love with him"
"Well I am, if you only knew how good he's been to me. I love him. Please believe me. No else well"
"You don't understand. He is what he is Charolette. You can't change him. He'll take you in time and when that happens I will have to kill you"
"Fine kill me than, I would rather die than to go anywhere without him. Don't take me back. I mean it. I simply could not live without Meier.
Dust perched on her shoulder
"Either way you see it the girl dies"
Selena sighed
"Selena, the sun will be at its peek soon"
Turning to D one last time, Selena disappeared into the forest, leaving the girl to D and the woman.
"Princess…our Queen…your mother will be joyful to know you will return to her"
Selena turned to the wolf-man
"Whatever beauty that is left in this world will die under her reign. Even the Sacred Ancestor knew of this"
She answered turning to the carriage
"His beloved is in trouble…I suggest you move with heist"
"And you? You are not worried for yours?"
At that moment Selena turned to face his yellow gaze
"I can smell him on you as you are on him. I know when one is mated. Its rare in a Vampire much like yourself princess. Feel the heaviness in your heart?"
"There is no such thing"
This time the wolf-man laughed
"You don't sound convincing…I can smell your fear. Fear that he will reject you"
Selena continued on toward the forest
"What a pair you make! Truly one a great foe will respect in battle"
Caroline had her sights on the hunter. Pity he was truly a beauty in which she wouldn't have minded having in her bed. But as always duty calls. She licked her lips as her branches closed in on her prey.
"Mashira…take the carriage, I'll meet you once I finish the Dhampir"
"Be quick about it…"
He sensed her before he could see her, her sweet smell comforting him as she caught him
"D…"
Putting a strong arm around her shoulders Selena helped D toward the old oak tree, surrounded by its thick roots she laid him down in the shallow hole she made covering him, but he could see her strength leaving her. The last thing he saw was her disappearing again
The storm was heavy as it poured down, as Leila spoke of her family, D turned to see Selena beside him, awakening to the sound of the storm
"I don't really understand why you two should keep on doing this…"
She turned to Selena and D as he spoke
"Because we are Dhampir…we don't get to have a life, not like you"
Leila turned to Selena
"The little girl?"
"Safe…with her family…"
Selena closed her eyes, blocking everything out but the sound of the rain pouring down.
Leila climbed down the tree, watching as they saddled up onto their horses
"Well with the storm last night, they could not have gone far, we're even now…"
"Years ago, I came across a village that was under attack by vampires, buildings burned, people screamed, I took out the nest but it was too late. A little boy no more than five years old, lay dying in a pool of blood and feces. He was covered in bite marks, drained of blood and yet he was still breathing. I could do nothing but hold him, tell him everything was going to be alright…"
Selena looked into the far distance chuckling
"He told me that it was okay…that I didn't have to lie, he was ready to die…lying there in death and destruction as his village burned, his family's corpses turning to ash and he was comforting me. Barely five years old and ready to die"
She turned to Leila
"Human life is so short…so fragile…do yourself a favor, once all this is over and if you survive…live the years that you have left. Do not let them go to waste…"
With this Selena turned and nudged her horse into high gear, she needed to get to the castle before it was too late.
"Your in love with him…"
Selena urged Rampage faster, tears escaping
"It matters none, Dust"
I used Charlotte's description of D from The Rose Princess, also forgot to mention.
The Chapter is a bit short but I'll make up for it.
