After Brennan and Booth had their special night the pair could not keep their hands off of each other or stay away for too long. Their friends could tell that their dynamic had changed, positively but they couldn't place their finger on it. Booth had been spending more time with Alex and soon she was attached to his hip, just like her mother.
Alex was sitting on the steps of her school waiting for either her mom or Booth to come pick her up. Usually, they were always the first ones in line for the carpool, but today Alex didn't see either of them. She soon grew impatient and decided that she was "big" enough to walk to the Jeffersonian. She knew her away around the little neighborhood, she knew she had to cross the street, keep walking straight until she passed a park and so on. Alex took pride in being a scientist and she knew how important her memory is. Soon Alex began walking and she was very much enjoying the sun and hearing the chitter chatter of the nannies as she passed by the park. Alex approached the lab and waved hi to Micah, the security officer, he rushed towards her, "Oh, kid!" he began, "Your mother and Booth got the whole city looking for you! We gotta rush to your mom's office." he said as he took her hand. Alex didn't understand why Micah was acting this way. As soon as Micah approached Brennan's office, Alex saw her mothers tears flow from her eyes and Booth yelling orders on the phone. "Doc, I got someone that belongs to you." Micah said and Alex took one step into the office and before she knew it her mother was squeezing her tightly. Booth took a big sigh and called off the search and began to apologize to whomever he was previously yelling at. Brennan held Alex's face in her hands, "Are you okay?! Please don't ever leave school again without letting one of us know! You are still too young to walk home by yourself. We were worried sick." she said rambling and stroking Alex's long hair. "I'm sorry. I really didn't think it was a big deal. I've walked home from school plenty of times...you know.. Before? It was even farther. I just thought one of you forgot about me or was too busy.. I'm sorry mommy." Alex said while looking at the floor. Booth kneeled down and lifted Alex's chin. "Your mom and I did not forget about you, okay? We were at the FBI interrogating one of our suspects, it ran late. We sent an agent to pick you up, but they also were late." he said while kissing Alex's forehead. Alex smiled and took one of her hands and placed it on his. Brennan was too busy crying, still. New mom hormones? Maybe. "Mom, I'm okay. I said I was sorry, I didn't mean to make you cry like this." Alex whispered. Brennan sniffled and wiped her eyes quickly, "Oh, honey. You didn't do anything wrong. It was a misunderstanding, but from now on, I or Booth will be there to pick you up, on time….I'm crying because for a moment I thought someone had taken you or hurt you… you're my child. I just love you so much." Brennan said while her lip was still quivering. Alex saw and heard her mother and she hugged her so tightly. "I love you so much, mommy. Can I get adopted this weekend?" she whispered into her mothers neck. Brennan nodded and squeezed Alex even tighter, "I think that's a wonderful idea baby. I love you." she said. Booth kissed Bones softly on the lips as she remained in the hug and whispered, "God, I love you so much."
The next morning Booth was in Brennan's office. She was on the phone with the judge, whom she worked with plenty in the past. He had made an exception for temperance by accepting a weekend court date for the adoption. She was grinning ear to ear, and Booth was too. He was too excited and began to dance in her office. She chuckled and hung up the phone, "We have a court date!" She threw her hands in the air and walked over to Booth and gave him a passionate kiss. "I love you, Booth." she said and Booth kissed her back, "I love you, Bones. Now, we have a party to plan for our girl!" He said as he stepped back and clapped his hands. "Should we have a cake? Oh, we need to get copies of our pictures to hang up in the apartment, pictures she has of everyone in the family, perhaps I can get her a new microscope? Hodgins could help with that!" Bones was rambling and Booth knew she was excited as they walked through the decorations at the store. Booth took her hand, "for someone who's never had a party thrown for her. You definitely know how to throw one. Alex is so lucky." He gave her hand a squeeze. She smiled sadly, "I'm going to give her the life she deserves." She got closer to him, "you already are, Bones." And kissed her forehead. The couple continued to shop for Alex's "gotcha day" even though she's already been with Brennan for a while. Meanwhile, at school Alex had been chatting with one of her classmates, Marisol. Her and Alex were the only two girls of Latinx descent in her classroom and would often speak Spanish to each other during their breaks. "I'm really happy I get to speak in Spanish with you, I don't want to forget it." Alex spoke softly in Marisol's direction. "I know what you mean, but you know you can speak it at home, right?" Marisol said with a confused look on her face. Alex raised her eyebrows, "Huh?" the inaudible noise escaped her lips. Marisol giggled, "Your mom, Dr. Brennan speaks about 7 different languages. One of them being Spanish." Alex had felt some relief but also some sadness because she was reminded that she didnt know everything about her mom. Reminded that she did not share the blood running through her mothers veins. Marisol could tell Alex was sad, "Oye, don't get sad. You have time to get to know your mamá. You are getting adopted this weekend!" she spoke with conviction….with hope. Alex was reminded about her wonderful family, the family that chose her and she began to feel the butterflies in her stomach. She was happy to become Alexandra Brennan and somewhat relieved to leave Alexandra Vargas and all her trauma behind. She shivered as she remembered the life she used to live, a life before her mother.
