Kate walked around the clean hotel room. She couldn't believe she had switched rooms. She couldn't believe she had switched hotels. She couldn't believe Jack had turned on her so quickly.
On the island, she'd offered him the truth. If he hadn't stopped her, she would have gladly spilled every secret, every trauma. But he told her that it didn't matter; he told her it was a fresh start.
Would her entire life require her to be punished for past mistakes?
She checked her phone again, finding nothing she tossed it on the bed before taking a long, hot bath.
Jack ran his hands through his hair, struggling to think. Where would she have gone? Then it hit him. Aaron. Impulsively, he grabbed everything, checked out of the hotel and hopped the first flight back home. He hoped he wouldn't be more than a few hours behind her. Maybe they'd wind up on the same flight. At least on a plane she couldn't run from him.
Kate stood over her phone in only a towel. Her brow furrowed when she realized Jack still hadn't contacted her. He hadn't calmed down. He hadn't apologized. He hadn't even asked where she was. He didn't even care to talk to her at all.
In a huff she began packing up items she had just unpacked. Halfway through she stopped and caught a breath, trying to come back to her senses.
Kate had worked very hard on not running anymore. Her case being dropped, escaping the island, Jack and Aaron had motivated her to face things head on, especially when it came to Jack.
She slipped into a simple yellow sundress and grabbed her purse as she headed to Jack's hotel room. They could always get her suitcase later on, but she needed to get to him as quickly as she could. If he wouldn't come to her, she was going to him.
Kate raced down the hall as soon as the elevator doors opened. She couldn't lose Jack. Not like this.
She turned the corner and lifted her hand to knock on the door but stopped in her tracks. The door was wide open and two maids cleaned the room.
"Can I help you?" The older maid asked.
"There… there's a man staying in that room…"
"The man who was in this room checked out early. There's no one in this room anymore," she said sadly. Kate hated the looks of pity on their faces. They were all women, they knew what this was. Kate offered a hazy nod; her mind was racing so fast that she felt dizzy.
As she headed to the elevator she grabbed her cell. "Cassidy! Hey! No, not yet but I'm getting ready to book my ticket now … He's actually already on the way home... I was actually wondering if you could get Aaron from Margo's? … Jack? You just let me deal with Jack."
