Brennan allowed Alex to keep sleeping, it was nearly noon, and Brennan was in the kitchen making lunch for them both. She was making a salad and heard Alex's footsteps approaching and saw Alex enter the kitchen rubbing her eyes, "Hi sleepyhead. How are you feeling?" she asked as she approached Alex and felt her forehead. Alex placed her arms around her mom. "I feel better." Alex mumbled. Brennan led Alex towards the couch and sat her down. While Alex was sleeping Brennan was reading regarding the stigma adopted children felt. "I would like to talk to you about something." Brennan said as she stared into Alex's brown eyes. Alex nodded, "I'm not in trouble, right?" she asked. Brennan shook her head, "No, you're not in trouble, honey." She placed a kiss on Alex's forehead. Brennan smoothed her hair, "What's your name?" Brennan asked. Alex raised her left eyebrow, "Alexandra Brennan?" she said. Brennan laughed, "I'm not trying to confuse you. I promise." she said. Alex chuckled and Brennan continued, "The District of Columbia and the United States Government know that you belong to me. You are my daughter. It is a very sad fact that I did not bring you into this world. We do not have the same blood type. However, as you know many of your aunts and uncles, our family, is not biologically related. Different types of families exist. We all chose to create this family of ours. I chose you and you chose me. Do you understand what I'm trying to say?" Brennan asked Alex who began to sniffle. Alex nodded and had a small smile on her face. "Will you still love me the same…if and— when…you have a baby with Booth? That baby- will be yours and Booth's. Will I still be his princess?" she asked as the tears began to stream down her face. Brennan's heart broke at the question. She gave Alex a tight hug, "Oh, that won't happen for quite a long time." she squeezed her, and Alex continued to cry, "But, I can tell you this. When and if we have a child, I will love you just the same. My love for you won't fade, it'll only get stronger. You will always be Booth's princess, that's for sure. He'll do anything for you. You are irreplaceable, Alexandra." she said as she held Alex's face in her hands.
"I'll love you when you break curfew, I'll love you when you make mistakes, I'll still love you when you get mad at me. I'll love you through it all. That's what mothers do. You made me a mother." she continued as she played with Alex's dolphin ring on her finger. Alex nodded and responded, "I love you too, mommy." The pair ate their lunch and Brennan drew a bath for Alex. The thought of having a child with Booth was nerve wrecking for her but she continued to fantasize about the idea. She placed her hand on her stomach as she thought about the hypothetical child. But was disrupted by her phone ringing, it was Booth. "I was just thinking about you." she said as she answered. Booth laughed, "I was thinking about you and my princess. How is she?" he asked. Brennan sighed, "She's fine. But I believe something may be bothering her. I'll have to tell you about it when I see you tonight. How's work?" she asked. Booth groaned as he was at his desk, "Boring. When there are no bones there is no Bones. So, I have paperwork. I'm a desk monkey." he said while making chimp noises. Brennan laughed, "You are not a monkey, but you definitely make me bananas." she said. Causing Booth to laugh, "That was a good one, Bones! I'll see you later. I love you." he said. Brennan responded sweetly, "See you later. I love you." and hung up the phone.
Alex had finished her bath and got dressed. She retreated to her bedroom and took out a journal her Aunt Ange had given her. She took out a pencil and wrote out 'Courtney' she began to create a hypothesis regarding her peer's behavior. Alex had concluded that Courtney's mom is mean and that is why Courtney is too. Alex approached her situation with Courtney as her latest science experiment and remembered what her Uncle Sweet's said. The emotions and behaviors we are surrounded by, affect us.
She closed her notebook and ran to the living room where her mother was working on her laptop. "Mom is Uncle Sweets back from vacation yet?" she asked with her journal in her hands. Brennan studied her child, "No, not yet. Are you okay?" she asked. Alex smiled and nodded, "Yes. I just wanted to know when I would be seeing him." She said and immediately turned around to go back to her bedroom.
Booth returned from work that evening and Brennan welcomed him in with a big hug. Booth grounded as he picked her up, "You smell amazing." he said as he buried his face into her hair. She laughed, "Thank you. I showered." she said as she placed a kiss on his temple. He looked around the apartment for Alex, "Princess?! Where is my girl?" he asked loudly. Brennan laughed and they both heard Alex running down the hall. She had a big smile on her face. "Booth! You're back!" she said as she jumped into his arms. Booth kissed her cheek, "Are you feeling better?" he asked her, and she nodded. "Yes. Thank you." she replied. Brennan led Booth into the kitchen and handed him a beer while Alex went back to her room. Booth sat down at the counter and Brennan remained standing on the other side. "Today, Alex asked me…if when you and I have a baby… would we still love her. She asked if you would still think of her as your princess." she said while studying Booth's face. His eyes were wide. He studied his surroundings, "she said that? Why would she say that? She will always be my princess." he whispered. Brennan smiled and nodded in agreement. "I told her that, don't worry." she said as she placed her arms around his neck. "A baby, huh?" Booth said in amusement and Brennan playfully smacked his shoulder, "I said when and if Booth. You know I don't believe in absolutes." she said as she kissed him.
