A monster
As soon as they saw the man Murilo and Danilo pointed their rifles at him, André had stuck the gun in the back of his pants to go through the papers.
- Drop the weapon, you're outnumbered. - Murilo said.
- Calm down cowboy, I'm just here for these documents.
- Why did you do this? Do you have any idea how many people died?! - Amanda asked.
- I already explained to you the importance of sacrifices Miss Amanda, how many wars do you know that were won without any deaths?
- War? This is a pandemic, and your priority was to hide information and let thousands of people die to do experiments?! - André didn't believe in what that man had done.
- Of course it is a war, one where the very amount or lack of information is the weapon. - The lieutenant began to approach slowly. - You think it's just here? The dead are coming back all over the world. If we get a cure first, every other country would buy it, and we would finally have money, knowledge, and respect. We would be proud to be Brazilian.
- Proud to be Brazilian… - Isa said as she stood up with Guilherme's help, surprising everyone. - It's because of people like you that we don't feel that way! You're nothing but a murdering thug.
- I did it for my country! And I would do as many times as necessary, now give me those papers! - Roche said extending his hand and getting closer to André.
- What do you want this for? It's of no use to you unless… let me guess, are you going to use one of the ships to escape? - The brunette said staying away from the man.
- Of course I am, this city is lost, but if we use the ship's hostages for more experiences…
Roche held back a laugh. It was hilarious, really. A bunch of kids wanting to be little angels and be responsible, wanting to teach him, a lieutenant, how to act. They were stronger than they looked, he admitted, but not knowing how to unlock the safety switch on a gun was enough to make him want to laugh until he cried. Poor things, they think they have the upper hand but actually it's the other way around. Or at least that's what he thought. He could just kill them and take the documents from the cold, dead hands of the leader without any resistance, but since it cost him several soldiers and the best scientists in town, he had a better idea.
- …we could find the cure in the blink of - Nobody noticed how close the man was to Ana, she didn't expect that either. - eyes!
The lieutenant pulled the girl by the neck and, with his arm around her throat, pointed the gun at her head. André felt his body go cold at the same time that a huge anger erupted.
- LET HER GO! - He screamed.
- Of course I will, as soon as you give me these documents. - The man said tightening his arm around her throat.
- A-and-dr-é… - The words came out with difficulty because of the squeeze.
- If you hurt her we-
- What? You are gonna shoot me? - The lieutenant asked the blue-haired boy. - You can try, but it's better to just give me the documents soon or I blow her head off. - He said forcing the gun against the girl's temple.
- Please, I… - André was ready to hand over the papers, but the look Ana gave him… told him not to.
- I'm losing my patience! 3... 2...
It may sound strange, but the whole situation was familiar to Ana. She grew up with two older brothers and a cousin who lived in the apartment next door. When they weren't messing up her clothes or stealing her books, they forced the girl to play "fight". Obviously there was nothing fair about that: three boys stronger and at least 4 years older than her, the game always ended in crying. Until one day she got tired of being their punching bag. Thanks to her aunt, she learned to defend herself, especially when one of them gave her that shit of a sleeper hold. At that moment it was as if Ana was back at her house, running from her brother and as soon as he caught up with her, he always caught up with her, she prepared to get out.
Ana clenched her fist and punched the hand that was pointing the gun at her head, making it go up and aim at the ceiling, and then she brought her hand down with all her might on the man's groin. No man can maintain his composure when feeling that pain, not even a lieutenant. His face contorted in pain and the arm around Ana's neck lost its strength. The girl broke away from the man leaving him exposed to anything. André's eyes met the Lieutenant's and he was now very angry. Enough rage to want to shoot each of them. André couldn't let that happen, his own anger was still strong at seeing that gun pointed at his girlfriend's head. He dropped the papers, reached into the back of his pants, feeling for the butt of the gun. He saw the man slowly gather himself and turn the gun toward him. There was no more time.
He pulled the gun, aimed, and pulled the trigger.
Everything looked the same the first time he fired, there on the first floor. The noise popping his eardrums was the same, the pain in the hand due to the kick was the same too… but the target was quite different. The Lieutenant dropped his weapon to the ground to bring both hands to his chest where a red stain appeared. He was looking wide-eyed at the boy. That… kid was smarter than him. He! Joaquim Roche! Killed by a kid who doesn't even know how to hold a gun. He wanted to curse the boy, curse his fifteen generations, but the blood rose in his throat making it difficult to say anything. His legs gave out and as he dropped to her knees she felt her vision blur. While he could, he looked once more at the boy who had killed him, his wide eyes staring back at him.
Eyes full of fear.
Excellent.
Something he gained from that situation. After all, he himself remembers how it felt to kill his first victim.
A monster.
He allowed himself to laugh once more as his body dropped to the ground and everything went dark.
