Baby Bing number two was due in two weeks. Monica was able to convince Chandler to travel ahead to Tulsa and stay there for a few days just to secure some things - a nice apartment, some basic things for their babies like a bed for Daniel, a crib for their coming son, changing table and many other things that Monica had included in a list.
Though hesitant to go, Chandler knew he wouldn't win. Her mere smile as always, easily softened his stance.
Honey! Monica excitedly lifted the phone. So sure that it was her husband calling.
No! This is you ex-boyfriend, Chandler! Don't tell your cute husband, Mr. Bing! Chandler replied changing his voice.
He could hear Monica laughing. Well, he knew he told a lot of jokes and sometimes they fell flat on their friends' ears but their reaction never really mattered to him. It was always Monica's reaction that meant the world. Some people may not understand it but making her laugh kind of gave him an assurance that his wife still found him cute and funny.
Oh, alright, so don't tell your wife that your ex-girlfriend, Monica, misses you!
She does?… Well, I miss you, too!… So, honey, I have done almost everything on your list, took photos for you to see so I will be coming back tomorrow. I saved one day, honey. See? I didn't need three days.
Wow, you are fast and efficient. Is it a really nice apartment? Why didn't you close the deal already?
Well, I wanted you to see it first.
Ahhh, so sweet but honey, I trust that you will be able to choose a nice one for us.
I know but since they agreed that we can make the decision there then if we like it, we can just give them a call, send them a cash transfer then we're good. We'll just sign the contract when we get here… Oh you'll love this place. It's near my office and there's a daycare nearby that we can check out for Daniel.
Wow, I must say I'm getting more excited than scared about moving… Thank you, honey! You just make it all seem easy. Monica tells Chandler rubbing her tummy.
I love you! was Chandler's reply.
I love you, too! she replied back.
I don't hear Daniel. Is he asleep?
He's not here. Joey and Phoebe borrowed Daniel. I think they're giving Daniel a treat. I mean, they've always wanted to do that.
Wow, I'm happy they've finally convinced him to join them without any of us there.
I know. That's good, right?
Yeah. Our son is growing up.
Then silence on the other line.
Mon, honey? Are you sill there?
Chandler could hear Monica breathing heavily.
I'm okay, honey. Monica finally said but Chandler knew her too well.
Honey, are you starting to have contractions? Chandler could hear Monica's breathing even if he knew she was trying to cover the mouthpiece.
Chandler started to breathe heavily also. Okay, hon, I'm gonna call Ross and I'm heading to the airport now. I'm gonna call you again.
Chandler stuffed everything in his bag while dialing Ross' phone number but he was constantly directed to the answering machine. He left a message each time.
Ross, Rachel, it's Chandler. Can you please go check on my wife. I think she's having contractions now. Call me ASAP.
Chandler knew Joey and Phoebe had Daniel and tried to call Phoebe's cell but was likewise directed to the voicemail and left a message anyway. His mind was traveling miles ahead and though the cab was moving faster than usual at his request, he felt like it was going very slow.
Then he thought about calling Jack and Judy. He just wanted to make sure someone would get to Monica then, whoever among his friends or Monica's parents, but he didn't want to alarm them so he just kept on redialing Ross' and Phoebe's phones until finally Ross answered.
Chandler. Sorry, I just came home. I'm heading to your apartment now. I will call you as soon as I get there. Don't worry. Monica will be fine.
I know, man. Thank you. Can you just get over there now?
Alright. Ross hung up the phone and left a note for Rachel in case she came with Emma after their week-long stay in Long Island.
Monica! Monica! Ross called frantically. He checked the rooms but there was no Monica there, checked the bathroom, too, still no Monica. Where could she be? Ross started to worry. Back in his apartment he was so confident his sister was just fine for after all, it was Monica, his freakishly strong sister.
Walking back to the kitchen he found a note that said -
Guys, I am heading to the hospital now. Please tell Chandler calmly. I don't want him to panic and then rush getting to me. Thanks. See you all later. - Monica
Phoebe, Joey and Daniel arrived shortly. Ross, where's Monica? We got about a hundred calls from Chandler.
Well, Monica left a note. She is heading to the hospital now. Ross replied.
Ross' cellphone rang. It was Chandler.
Hello? Ross, did you find Monica?
She's in the hospital now.
Can I talk to her?
No.
Why not?
Cause she went there on her own? Phoebe slapped Ross' shoulder mouthing 'why did you tell him?' then pointing to a part in Monica's note about telling Chandler calmly.
What? She went to the hospital alone?
But I'm heading there now.
Oh good. Man, please get there fast…. Look, we're boarding now. I am on my way back but I'll try to call if I can before the plane leaves. Thank you…. Oh, and are Phoebe and Joey there?… Please tell them they might need to stay with Daniel a little longer. Thank you, man.
At Beth Israel
Ross headed straight to the reception.
Good afternoon, Nurse. Ahmmm, I'd like to know if there is a Monica Geller admitted today.
The nurse searched for the name in her computer but returned nothing.
I'm sorry, Sir. There's no Monica Geller that came in today.
Can you try, Mrs. Monica Bing?
The nurse typed - Bing… Yes there's a Mrs. Bing. She's at 405. That's in the fourth floor, Sir.
Oh, thank you.
Ross came running to 405 and was relieved to see that his sister was there walking back and forth across the room. From the look on her face, he could tell she had been crying and was in pain but the moment he came through the door, it was like she turned on a switch and was trying to act like she was okay.
Oh, Ross. Thank you for coming.
Monica, I know you're strong and independent but you should've called me. I mean, I'm you're big brother. I wanna be there for you. Ross said as he puts his arm around her shoulder giving her a kiss on the cheek.
I'm sorry. I just don't wanna disrupt your lives. I mean you have your job, you have Emma and Ben… And besides I already know the drill.
It doesn't matter, Mon. I know you have Chandler now but as your brother, I still want to be part of every milestone in your life just like I want you to be part of mine, too… You know I love you, right?
Oh, I know. Monica was obviously touched by her brother's gesture.
Hey, I gotta call Chandler. He's freaked out I think I have about a hundred miss calls from him and about that much miss calls in Phoebe's phone, too.
Oh, can you call Phoebe and Joey, too? They will have to look after Daniel a while longer until Mom and Dad come.
Okay. Do you want me to call Mom and Dad, too?
Yes, please.
Monica's contractions were getting longer and closer together. She knew she could give birth any time. She knew the drill alright - the pain, the discomfort but one thing so different this time around was that, Chandler was not there beside her.
Mrs. Bing, we have to take you to the delivery room now. The nurse told her the second time.
But can we wait for my husband for a few minutes more? Monica pleaded the nurse then turned to her brother - Ross, is he anywhere near?
I think he is. He got a cab about 20 minutes ago. But you know how traffic gets really bad at this time of day… But, Mon, you gotta go. He'll catch up with you, don't worry.
You promise?
Promise! Ross told his sister but his fingers were crossed behind him. The last call he had with Chandler was when the plane was about to leave. Chandler's phone kept sending a lowbatt tone so Ross knew the conversation was cut because Chandler's phone died out.
