Assassin's Creed Kamikaze - Prologue

Hsinking (Changchun) - March 1942

"I wonder why Grand Master Doihara summoned us," Senior Novice Nakata whispered to his other two colleagues. Clad in the classic Assassin robes, the trio made their way into the heart of the Assassin headquarters.

Traditionally, an Assassin Brotherhood headquarters would be unassuming to avoid detection by the Templars. However, this lifestyle did not suit Doihara's style. The headquarters was lavished with tapestry and expensive furniture.

It was not the only issue the Assassins had with their Grand Master. Dubbed the "Lawrence of Manchuria", Doihara ran a criminal empire in both Free and Occupied China. Controlling drug rings, gangsters and prostitution centres, he kept the will of the Chinese sedated and hampered Chinese resistance effort. Such behaviour ran contrary to the teachings of previous Master Assassins.

Hanzo, the Japanese Master Assassin during the Edo period advocated for a simplistic lifestyle. Ezio, the Italian Master Assassin and Mentor during the Renaissance, taught that innocents should not be harmed. None of their teaching mattered to Doihara. As long as he supported the Japanese efforts to control China, he and the Japanese Assassins had the support of the Imperial Japanese.

"We do not question the Grand Master," Veteran Fuga reminded his subordinate.

They entered the court of the Grand Master and they bowed routinely to him. Doihara gave the trio a quick, annoyed glance and looked away.

"The Imperial Japanese army has run into trouble in the Dutch East Indies. Some Allied commandos have been targeting the army officers. This is lowering the fighting ability of our countrymen. You are all task with taking out these jungle commandos."

First Rank Kawaguchi finally spoke. The officer had been quiet the entire journey after linking up with his other two colleagues. He questioned the importance of the mission. Surely this was an Imperial Japanese Army issue, not the business of the Assassins.

Doihara tried to hide his irritation at being questioned.

"I determine what is and is not Assassin business. As you all know, Japan is the only regional power that allows the existence of the Assassins. Japan's well-being is our well-being."

"Ryokai!" the trio responded as Doihara dismissed them. Doihara's aide then escorted the three to receive their written orders. They were to be placed under the jurisdiction of General Imamura. After exchanging details about the mission, the trio was set to go.

Author's note:

I understand the controversy of portraying the Imperial Japanese as the protagonists in this story. The Imperial Japanese were known for their numerous war crimes, including the Rape of Nanking and Operation Sook Ching. My grandparents were tortured during the Occupation of Singapore.

What interests me about this time period was the political intrigue of that time. There was bickering within the Imperial Japanese leadership. According to the Assassin's Creed wiki, the Americans, British, Soviets and Germans were all under control of the Templars. So I decided to mash the two storylines together and bring in an alien element.

This story will focus more on the power play between the Assassins and Templars. I will not be glorifying the Imperial Japanese soldiers.
