Chapter 3
Lizzy's screen returned to show just herself and John as Virgil disconnected from the call.
"I'm so sorry John, I didn't mean…I mean I didn't think…." she started feeling awfully guilty for being so silly and causing so much trouble.
"Honey it's ok, what's happened has happened. We need to focus on getting you help and getting you better." John replied. There would be time for a proper discussion later, but now wasn't the right time. He looked up at the screen above him and could see the two dots of his brothers tracker chips in their watches moving out of the main residential building. "I'm just checking Lizzy, and Scott and Virgil are in the jungle now. They won't be long now."
Lizzy didn't give a reply and John noted she was starting to zone out. He quickly replayed this to Virgil and tried to keep his sister engaged while her rescue arrived. "…She's 400m to your 12'oclock."
"Lizzy, they are really close now" John said to his sister, "Can you hear them yet?"
She shook her head, but kept listened intently while John kept her talking until she caught a few sounds of movement in the jungle. "I can hear them." She said gratefully.
In just over a minute, Scott and Virgil came into view, "They're here John, I can see them coming."
"You've done so well honey, they'll have you home in no time." John reassured.
Scott and Virgil hurried over and set their kit bags down before kneeling on either side of her. Lizzy was unsurprisingly mightily relieved to see them.
"Hello honey, what have you been up to, swan diving off the balcony, honestly you'll give us both grey hair before we're 35." Lizzy couldn't quite manage a smile at Virgil's humour, but grasped tightly the hand he held out to her, while he pushed back some of her platinum blonde hair which had fallen across her eyes. Scott meanwhile hovered on her other side and taking her phone propped it up against a small rock so she could see John as well.
"I'm so sorry", she replied, her voice working its way back up to tears, but Virgil was anxious to keep his patient as calm as possible.
"Hey, hey, it's ok. We'll get you all sorted, accidents happen. Can you tell me how you came to fall?"
"I was sitting on the railings and spilt some of my drink, my legs slipped back, and I lost my balance."
Virgil nodded and looked over his right shoulder at the balcony above, visually assessing the fall. "How did you land?"
"On my side". She replied, indicating to her right.
Virgil looked her over and noted the abnormal shape of her wrist. "Did you hit your head when you landed?"
"A little."
"Have you lost consciousness at all?"
"No."
"Have you got any pain in your neck or back?" he asked as he reached across to the back of her neck and gently began to run his hands down the bones. "Nothing when I'm pressing along here?" Virgil was pleased when she replied no. Just to be sure he pulled the small scanning devise Brains had designed for his medical kit. Handheld in size and utilising an adapted version of sounds waves, the ingenious piece of kit could quickly identify bone fractures. It had proved invaluable on rescues, especially when time was of the essence. He was relieved when the devise picked up no issues along her neck and spine, or across her pelvis.
"Any pain in your tummy?" Virgil continued as he lifted her top a little so he could have a look and press around the area. Again, Lizzy reported no discomfort and Virgil breathed a mental sigh of relief that there appeared to be no immediate indicators of internal bleeding. "That's good. Can you tell me where the pain is?"
"My wrist really hurts, as do my ribs." Virgil looked down at afore mentioned wrist and Lizzy watched him closely.
"I've broken it haven't I?"
Virgil winced and nodded, "For sure Lizzy, I don't need an x-ray to tell me that, but I will need one to tell me in what way it's broken. Can you move your fingers at all?" Lizzy shook her head.
Scott reached into his bag for a splint and began to set it out. In the meantime, Virgil ghosted his fingers across the limb and checked the cap refill on her fingers was unaffected. There was an obvious fracture, as the bony protuberance on the outside of her wrist was just not there. He hoped it was not complex or unstable fracture, otherwise he was going to be on the family jet, with Lizzy, to the mainland, for orthopaedic surgery by the end of the afternoon. Fingers crossed the fix was only going to need a light sedation and manual manipulation to put the bones back into place. Not something he particularly relished doing, bone re-sighting was a delicate and not to mentioned painful procedure for the patient.
"Ready when you are Virg." Scott added and the medic looked up to see the splint was ready to go.
"Lizzy I need to immobilise your wrist until we get you back to the infirmary. It will be uncomfortable while I move it, but I'll give you some pain killers first which will help." As he said this he was already digging into his medical bag and quickly selecting the items he needed to put a cannula in her left hand. "Little bit of a sharp scratch coming up." He informed her after he cleaned the area.
Virgil noted she was watching what he was doing and didn't flinch as the device was sighted. At least she hadn't picked up some of her older brother's dislike for needles, he thought. When the cannula was in place, he dextrously flushed it before drawing up a syringe of analgesia and slowly pushed the liquid through the injection port. "This should start to work quite quickly." He added and Lizzy nodded as she felt a cool sensation trickle up her arm for a few seconds.
Virgil continued to watch her closely while he checked her pupil reactions. They were equal and reactive and carefully he felt around her head. On the side he felt a small, raised area, it was a little tender to his touch, but the skin wasn't broken. Adeptly, he noted the medication and observation on the pad attached to the inside of his med bag.
"How's the pain Lizzy?" Scott asked, looking worriedly at his youngest sibling.
"It's better, it's dull now rather than sharp." Scott gave her a warm smile. He hated seeing any of his siblings hurt, but when it was his little sister, he hated it even more.
Virgil didn't want to break up the tender moment between the oldest and youngest sibling, but he needed Lizzy in the med bay. "Let's get your wrist strapped up, then I'll check your ribs before we get you back inside."
Lizzy nodded reluctantly and Scott reached for the splint ready to move it under her arm as Virgil lifted it. He had helped with this so many times on rescues that words weren't necessary between the two. Scott knew what Virgil needed him to do, and more importantly, how it needed to be done.
As gently as possible Virgil slid his hands under his sister's forearm and wrist to take the weight. Lizzy flinched and gave a sudden pained sharp intake of breath at the slight movement. As he carefully raised her arm, she let out a cry and curled her legs up a few inches towards her chest in response.
"You're being so brave Lizzy. You are doing so well", came John's encouragement through the phone at her obvious discomfort. Never had the distance from TB5 to earth felt so far.
Scott swiftly laid the padded splint and Virgil slowly lowered her broken arm into it. Securing the straps, Virgil looked across to his sister whose eyes were distinctly glassy with tears. "Well done Lizzy, I know that's not nice". He noted her bottom lip was starting to quiver and a slight shiver ran over her body. Shock was starting to make itself apparent.
"Virg can I sit up please?"
He nodded and reaching for a blanket he passed it to Scott, "Of course you can, let me take your weight as we do so though."
Nodding, she carefully put her good arm across to hold her ribs, knowing it was going to hurt. Being careful again, Virgil lifted her up and rested her back against Scott. When she was settled, her eyes were tightly closed and she was breathing in a purposefully shallow and controlled manner. Scott wrapped the blanket around her shoulders as she was leant against him and he placed a soft kiss into the crown of her head, whispering comforting words as he did so.
"I just need to have a quick look and then we can get you inside." With practiced efficiency Virgil felt across her ribs on the right side, they were already looking bruised and unsurprisingly tender. An X-ray was going to be needed for sure. Listening in with his stethoscope her lungs sounded nice and clear, which was a relief as well.
Lizzy's phone started making some alarming beeping noises and a warning message came up on screen. "John, I think Lizzy's phone is about to give up the ghost, I'll call you as soon as we get her settled in the med bay". John's reply was half cut off as the screen went black and Virgil pocketed the now stricken device just in case some of the hard drive could be salvaged later.
Virgil looked at Scott as he packed up the med kit. "Are you going to be ok to carry her back to the house?"
Scott gave him a perplexed look, "Do you even have to ask Virg?"
Virgil lightly shook his head and checked the splint was tight enough on Lizzy's arm.
"Come on honey", Scott said as Virgil helped him stand as smoothly as possible to reduce the jolting. "Let's get you to the med bay."
Seeing that Lizzy was as comfortable as she could be, Virgil slung the two med bags over his shoulder and led the way out of the jungle.
