Chapter 2- Over The Moon
Carmen Lockhart was just trying to enjoy her Saturday. She was laying in bed, had a musical theater playlist on, and level grinding in Final Fantasy XX. And right as she was getting to the level she needed to be in order to take on the next boss, she got a phone call. Groaning, she paused her game.
"This better be important, I'm vibing right now." Carmen asked, exasperated.
"It's really important! The card shop just got a new shipment of Super Fusion God, and they're going fast!" Amir explained, his voice hectic. Carmen almost dropped her phone as she rushed to get ready. She slammed her laptop shut and grabbed her shoes, heading out the door.
Super Fusion God was the latest booster pack from Industrial Illusions. Not only did it contain support for popular Fusion based archetypes like E Heroes, Invoked and Thunder Dragons, it had reprints of powerful Fusion support cards. And everyone in House Fusion would be clamoring to get their hands on a pack.
"Shit shit shit shit!" Carmen swore, putting on her favorite pink jacket. It wasn't a school day, so she didn't feel like wearing her uniform. She actually much preferred white and pink, and lacey clothes, over the simple black and purple school uniform.
A few minutes later, Carmen pushed through the doors of West Academy's card shop, practically tripping over her high heels. "I'm here! Are there any cards left?!" She quickly ran her hands through her hair, making sure her braids were in place.
"Um... we certainly have cards." Cecil, the sole employee of the card shop, responded. They were in the middle of cleaning their pet turtle, Pete, who usually wandered around the store, acting as an unofficial mascot. He had a bright red balloon tied to his shell so he didn't get lost. "The new ones are right over there..."
The Fusion duelist looked over to the display, where there was only one new pack left. And another girl was already walking towards it. A girl Carmen knew very well, unfortunately. "Oh, Carmen. Looks like you missed out this time." Ivy smirked.
Ivy Silverstein was a fellow House Fusion student, and for some reason, she considered Carmen her arch rival. Maybe it was the fact that they sat next to each other in most of their classes, maybe it was because they both used attribute focused decks, or maybe it was just that Ivy was super competitive and most of the other girls didn't take her seriously. Who could say?
"I'll duel you for it!" Carmen said, out of breath. She held up her hand, asking for a pause, and knelt over, inhaling deeply. "Oh God, I think I broke something running here. Why did I wear heels?!" She finally caught her breath, and strapped on her Duel Disk. It was one of the three things Carmen never left home without (the other two being pepper spray and her phone).
Ivy looked at the Super Fusion God booster pack, then at Carmen. She grabbed her carrot red hair in frustration, and activated her Duel Disk. "Agh, fine! You're on!"
(Ivy LP 8000) - (Carmen LP 8000)
"I'm taking the first move!" Ivy drew a sixth card. "I set a monster and two more cards. That's all." A reversed card appeared in front of her, along with two others in the backrow.
"Don't tell me you're getting soft, Ives, you're usually so much flashier than that." Carmen snarked. "Let me show you how to make an impression. I summon Lunalight Emerald Bird!" A surprisingly pretty monster appeared in front of her. It was a young girl with pale green skin, wearing a bright orange and blue onepiece, and a feathery green cape. She had short orange hair, and a crescent moon shaped mask over one eye. (ATK 1200)
"When I do that, I can discard 1 Lunalight card and draw again!" She slid a card into her discard slot, and drew once more. "And because the monster I discarded was my Yellow Marten, I get to search out a Lunalight spell or trap from my deck!" A card shot out of her deck, and she quickly snatched it up.
"Let me guess, Luna Light Perfume?" Ivy raised an eyebrow. She'd dueled Carmen enough to know her strategy inside and out. The two girls had practically memorized each other's decks.
"Not this time! I activate Lunalight Foxtrot!" Carmen's next card was a Continuous Spell, with artwork depicting Akz the Pumer dancing with Lunalight Crimson Fox. "I just got this one recently, I haven't even had a chance to use it in a duel yet! It lets me draw one card every time I fusion summon a Lunalight monster."
"But first, I use Yellow Marten's effect! By returning a Lunalight card to my hand, I can special summon her from my graveyard!" Foxtrot vanished, and another Beast Warrior joined Emerald Bird on the field. This one was yellow with blonde hair, wearing a frilly pink outfit, and had a long bushy tail. (DEF 2000) "Of course, she's banished if she leaves the field. I also get to search out a Lunalight spell or trap card from my deck, but I'll play that one later."
"I reactivate Foxtrot, and then I play Fusion Substitute!" The Fusion vortex opened up above the duel field, sucking in Marten and Bird. "By combining the claws of a fierce nighttime huntress and the feathers of a graceful dancer, I can create a new lunar legend! Fusion Summon! Lunalight Cat Dancer!"
The fusion monster was a humanoid woman with pink skin and long wine-red hair, wearing flowing robes over a skintight catsuit, a golden crescent moon mask, and what looked like a Mayan crown. She had cat ears and a tail, but they were easy to miss. (ATK 2400) "I also get to draw once due to Foxtrot's effect."
"Go ahead and attack." Ivy put her hand on her hip. "You might destroy my monster, but my life points are safe."
"Wait to take all the fun out of it!" Carmen pointed her finger, ordering Cat Dancer to attack. The Beast Warrior drew two daggers from her nonexistent pockets, and charged forward. Ivy's facedown card flipped up, revealing... a turtle. A turtle with a shell made out of a sparkling green gemstone, but still. (DEF 2000)
"Thanks for flipping Gem-Turtle! Now I get to add Gem-Knight Fusion from my deck to my hand!" Ivy explained, as a card shot out of her Duel Disk. Before she could say anything else, Lunalight Cat Dancer leaned over, lightly scratching her with a dagger. "Ouch, I forgot about the burn damage!"
"I set two cards and end my turn." Carmen nodded, feeling confident that the Super Fusion God pack would be hers.
(ILP 7900) - (CLP 8000)
"Alright, I'm gonna start out with a couple traps." Ivy hit a couple of buttons on her Duel Disk. "Reckless Greed lets me get my next two Draw Phases in advance, and Back To The Front brings Gem-Turtle back in defense mode." She drew twice, bringing her hand up to 7 cards, and then the turtle monster reappeared.
"I summon Gem-Knight Sardonyx!" A rocky warrior in orange and white armor joined the field, swinging around a mace made from its namesake gemstone. (ATK 1800)
"I can't believe you're still running that thing." Carmen teased. "Don't you know Geminis are the worst mechanic in the game?"
Ivy fumed. "Shut up, they work for my deck! And Sardonyx isn't sticking around much longer, because I'm going to Link Summon!" The Link Circuit appeared above the dueling field, and Ivy's monsters began to glow. "Open, the circuit of hopes and dreams! Link Arrows authorized! The summoning conditions are two Gem monsters!"
The two Gems turned into bright light and hit the circuit, causing two of the arrows to turn red. "I set Gem-Turtle and Gem-Knight Sardonyx in the Link Arrows! Link the Circuit! Gem-Knight Phantom Quartz!" Out of the circuit descended a holy looking warrior in white armor, with huge wings and flowing blonde hair. Unlike most Gem-Knights, you could actually see what was underneath Phantom Quartz's armor. In this case, it was glowing, almost transparent skin made of crystal. (ATK 1450)
"Wow... I never get over how pretty that one is." Carmen sighed, almost forgetting whose side she was on. "So, what are you gonna summon next?"
"You'll see~" Ivy winked. "Phantom Quartz lets me search out a Gem-Knight card. But I think I'll play Gem-Knight Fusion first. I fuse Gem-Knights Amber and Lapis!" The Fusion vortex opened up, sucking in two new knights. The first was small and feminine looking, with no real armor. The second was pale blue, and wore slimmer armor when compared to Sardonyx or Phantom Quartz. "Two gems sparkle together, illuminating a new stone! Fusion Summon! Gem-Knight Lady Rose Quartz!"
The monster that appeared was clearly female. She was bright pink, and her armor seemed to incorporate a skirt, albeit one that was open in the front. She carried a massive lance that she somehow carried with one hand. (ATK 2100)
Carmen took a step back. "When the heck did you get that?! I thought I'd seen every card in your deck at this point!" She was shocked! Betrayed, even!
"I pulled it out of a booster pack!" Ivy bragged. "This isn't the first Super Fusion God pack I've bought, I got here earlier when they were fresh. I just wanted to make sure I got another one before the school ran out."
Carmen balled her free hand into a fist, more determined than ever to get that pack. "She's still weaker than my Cat Dancer!"
"For now." Ivy quickly played another card. "Ledger of Legerdemain banishes three cards from the top of my deck face down, and adds them to my hand in three turns. I originally put this card in my deck to make up for the lost draws from Reckless Greed, but now I have another use!"
Rose Quartz was surrounded by a glittering aura, as her ATK increased to 3000! "She gains 300 attack and defense for each of my banished cards! But before we get to the fun part, I activate Gem-Knight Valor!" A continuous spell appeared on her field. "Now my Gem Knight fusions can't be destroyed outside of battle, and you can't chain to their attacks! Go, Lance of Luxury!"
Gem-Knight Lady Rose Quartz lunged forward, striking Lunalight Cat Dancer with her weapon. The Beast Warrior hissed as she shattered into pixels. "I should also mention that Rose Quartz negates the effects of attack position monsters she attacks. Whoops~" Ivy teased.
"Yeah, well, I chain Lunalight Reincarnation Dance!" One of Carmen's set cards lifted. "I get to add two Lunalight cards to my hand now, and I choose my Crimson Fox and Velvet Mouse!"
"Like those will help! Phantom Quartz, attack directly with Soul Force!" The Link Monster didn't have a weapon, so it simply punched Carmen in the stomach. She bent over, not used to taking direct blows like that. "That'll end my turn. Your move, worstie."
Carmen grumbled about outdated memes and drew a card. "You're not the only one who picked up another summoning method! I load the Pendulum Scale with my Scale 1 Lunalight Wolf and my Scale 6 Lunalight Velvet Mouse!"
Like Chad before her, two pillars of light containing new monsters appeared on Carmen's field. The first was a curvy woman in a purple bodysuit with very long black hair, wearing an orange moon-shaped mask that covered her entire face. The second looked like a young girl, with pink skin and a red costume; like her name suggested, she had big rodent ears and a long tail. "I Pendulum Summon Lunalight Blue Cat and Crimson Fox!"
Carmen's next monsters looked pretty much how you would expect. Blue Cat was a feminine Beast Warrior in tights with blue hair, cat ears and a tail. (ATK 1600) Crimson Fox wore a dark red outfit with long boots, and had a bushy fox tail. (ATK 1800) They both wore crescent moon shaped masks.
"Unless you can somehow use those two to summon Leo Dancer, there's no way you can defeat my Rose Quartz this turn." Ivy put a hand on her hip.
"I can do better! I've got new cards too, Ives~" Carmen responded. "I activate Lunalight Fusion! This special fusion spell can only be used for Lunalights, but since you have a fusion of your own on the field, I get to use one monster in my extra deck as fusion material!"
The Fusion Vortex opened up for a third time, only now it was pale pink and pastel blue. "I fuse Blue Cat, Crimson Fox and Panther Dancer!" The two beautiful Beast Warriors were briefly joined by a third, one with dark brown skin and purple clothing, before they vanished. A brand new monster descended onto the field, and the lights faded.
"Meet Lunalight Sabre Dancer!" Sabre Dancer had purple skin and a mane of wild blonde hair, and for some reason she was barefoot, showing off clawed feet. She wore a flowing pink shirt and tight black top underneath golden armor, and carried a sword in each hand. (ATK 3000)
"Jesus, who designed this thing?" Ivy snarked. "FurAffinity? Doesn't Industrial Illusions have any female employees?"
"I don't know, Elemental HERO Neos was pretty thicc..." Carmen tapped her chin.
"Neos was designed by Jaden Yuki, who is a guy!" Ivy reminded her.
"What are we even fighting about?" Carmen sighed. "Back to the duel. My Sabre Dancer gains 200 ATK for every Lunalight monster in my graveyard or that's been banished." The feminine Beast Warrior flashed her weapons as her score increase to 4200. "And I play Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy your Gem Knight Valor card!" The continuous spell was caught up in a tornado and shattered.
"I should also mention that Crimson Fox's effect drops a monster's attack points to zero?" A phantasmal version of Crimson Fox appeared, before leaping into the chest of Gem-Knight Lady Rose Quartz, causing the Rock's armor to become dull and colorless. (ATK 3000 - 0)
"Well... shit." was all Ivy had to say.
Sabre Dancer raised her twin swords and charged, slicing Rose Quartz in two. Ivy grimaced as her life points dropped to 3700. "I'm still in this, Carm! You won't beat me that easily!"
"All I know is, I'm really glad I slept in today!" Carmen laughed, running her fingers through her hair. "God, Ives, I never get tired of kicking your ass. I set two cards face down and activate Lunalight Velvet Mouse's pendulum effect. By paying 800 life points, I can add my banished Yellow Marten to my hand."
A card slid out of Carmen's duel disk, and she snatched it up. "That ends my turn. It's your move!"
(ILP 3700) - (CLP 5150)
"I gotta skip my draw phase due to Reckless Greed." Ivy grumbled. "But I've still got cards! I play Fusion Recovery to get back Gem-Knight Fusion and Gem-Knight Lapis. Then I play Gem-Knight Fusion to fuse Lapis and Amber!" The fusion vortex opened for a fourth time. A yellow armored knight wielding two daggers appeared alongside Lapis, and vanished. "Meet Gem-Knight Opal!"
This Gem-Knight was powder blue in color, and his armor was very simple. Sleek, shiny, smooth, barely any details. He carried a crossbow that seemed to be made of pure blue crystal. (ATK 2000)
"Another new monster?" Carmen asked. She'd definitely never seen this one before, and Ivy was constantly changing the contents of her Extra Deck. "I swear, you've got the whole cast of Steven Universe in your deck."
"First off, you and I both loved that show." Ivy replied. "And second, Opal's not a new card, they released this guy last year. I just haven't used him yet. He's a little situational. When he's summoned, he cuts the ATK of one of your monsters in half, and steals it for himself!"
Opal raised his crossbow and pointed it at Sabre Dancer. She began to give off a glowing red aura, which leaped from her body onto the enemy monster. (Opal ATK 2000 - 4000) (Sabre ATK 4000 - 2000)
"So what? I can take 3900 points of damage." Carmen had a strategy, and so far everything was going according to plan.
Ivy just laughed. "It's gonna be more than that! You're forgetting about Phantom Quartz here. He can fusion summon a Gem Knight by shuffling cards from my graveyard back into the deck, as long as I pay 1000 life points."
"So I'll take one part Lapis and one part Sardonyx, and mix them together... Two gems sparkle together, illuminating a new stone! Fusion Summon, Gem-Knight Lady Lapis Lazuli!" This monster, Carmen was familiar with. She, there was no doubting the monster was female, was much more humanoid than the other Gem Knights. She looked more like a statue of a woman wearing a dress than any knight. Her hair and clothes were both brilliant blue, while the rest was pale white. (ATK 2400)
"Can't say I'm surprised to see her. Have you ever taken her out of your Deck?" Carmen asked. Ivy shook her head. "Thought so."
"Well if you remember her so well, I guess I don't need to explain her effect!" Ivy took Gem-Knight Zirconia from her Extra Deck and quickly discarded it. Lapis Lazuli raised her arms and fired a blast of pure white light at Carmen, knocking her onto her feet.
"I activate my face down card, Lunalight Breakdance!" One of Carmen's set cards lifted up. "I just have to send Sabre Dancer to the graveyard, and I can special summon two non-Fusion Lunalights from my graveyard! And I don't take any damage when they're destroyed!"
Sabre Dancer growled and vanished, replaced by Emerald Bird and Blue Cat, both crouching in defense mode. Phantom Quartz and Lapis Lazuli destroyed them without Ivy even saying a word.
"Opal, it's time to end this duel. Attack directly with Bountiful Bow!" An arrow made of pure energy appeared in the knight's crossbow, and it aimed for Carmen's heart. She quickly activated her other set card, Damage Diet. The arrow reached her, but it was reduce in size by half. "Damn it!" Ivy cursed.
Carmen got to her feet and drew a card. "Start ringing up that booster pack, Cecil, because I'm about to win this duel!" She laughed. "I activate Lunalight Wolf's pendulum effect! I banish Panther Dancer, Crimson Fox and Blue Cat from my graveyard to fusion summon! Meet the majestic, the mighty, the masterful Lunalight Leo Dancer!"
The Beast Warrior made her grand entrance, leaping out of the fusion vortex and landing on one knee. She was a purple skinned humanoid with pale blue hair tied into a very long ponytail, wearing what could best be described as a bikini with a flowing trail attached that did nothing to cover her body. Leo Dancer carried a sword in one hand, and wore the same crescent moon mask as the other Lunalight monsters. She smiled, revealing cat-like fangs. (ATK 3500)
"I was gonna make a joke about wanting her to step on me, but I'm sure you've heard it before." Ivy half joked. Carmen ignored her.
"Attack with Lunar Lunge!" Leo Dancer took her sword in both hands and cleaved Gem-Knight Phantom Quartz in half, horizontally. The monster seemed to groan slightly before being destroyed. The fusion turned to Ivy's other two monsters and licked her lips.
"I'm sure you remember, after Leo Dancer attacks, all special summoned monsters you control are destroyed." Carmen snapped her fingers, and both Lapis Lazuli and Opal shattered into thousands of pixels. Leo Dancer wasted no time in attacking Ivy, slicing her with her sword. "And that's game!"
(ILP 0) - (CLP 1150)
Ivy groaned, collapsed on the ground. "Alright, Carm, you win. Enjoy your cards, you lucky bitch." She didn't bother to sit up, instead rolling over to make sure none of her cards had landed on the floor.
Carmen immediately grabbed the booster pack and slammed it on the counter, handing the money over to Cecil. "Keep the change, I gotta open this bad boy up right now!" She squeed.
Ripping open the Super Fusion God pack, Carmen looked over the six cards excitedly. "Synchro Fusionist, Fusion Recycling Plant, Final Fusion, Double Fusion, Predaplant Verte Anaconda, and..." Carmen gasped. The final card was a Lunalight monster. A fusion monster, on top of that, and one she'd never seen before. "Ives, you are not going to believe this!"

Sorry this chapter was so short! I promise the next one will last longer, I mostly wanted to have fun with some beatdown cards.
Next time, it's Ben's time to shine! The chapter is gonna be called "Space Jam", and it's gonna be chaotic!
