Chapter five:
*Ring!*
'I thought it would never end,' Kenjin exhaled and quickly packing up. He needed to leave quickly before his fan club could surround him. They were honestly getting worse, going from infatuation to smothering him with attention. Hopefully, they'd get the message that he wasn't interested. His thoughts soon shifted and went into a mental debate on what to cook later for dinner. 'Pasta or seafood' too invested in his thoughts. He didn't notice Issei turn the corner at the same time.
"Oof" grunting in mild pain looking down he saw Issei flat on his butt. "My bad, Issei," Extending a hand to help him up while scratching his neck sheepishly.
"It's cool" Isse waved it off with a smile. "It's actually a stroke of luck I ran into you. Buchan wanted to speak with you about the church incident." Kenjin nodded and followed behind as Issei lead them to the clubroom. Quickly noticing they were taking the long way.
"I wanted to thank you for saving me," Isse said, frustrated. "I was an idiot rushing in like that. If you didn't warn me, I wouldn't be here. For helping both Asia and me thank you," he said, bowing towards Kenjin.
"Issei, we all have our terrible moments. I too with off the rails and was almost punished for it," Kenjin replied, eyes gazing off into the distance. He shook himself out of such depressing thoughts when he saw Issei's concerned look. "Just remember this moment and strive to be better. While keeping in mind you have people to help you," he added.
. Issei seems to take the words to heart, thanking him once more. Before resuming their walk to the club. It didn't take too long after that. Arriving at the front of the building, Kejin had mixed thoughts about the building.
'Looks rundown maybe the inside's different?' he pondered. Soon proven correct once they entered. The inside was well kept and decorated with fine furniture. 'Could be brighter in here though,' chalking up to devil antics. They soon arrived at a pair of twin doors. Issei stopped in front of them and softly knocked twice before entering.
"Buchan I brought him," Issei announced, ushering him into the room. Inside were several people currently sitting and sipping tea. On the couch to the left sat Kiba, Koneko, and Asia. Rias sat at the desk in the back, Akeno at her side. It was the people sitting on the right couch that caused him to freeze. Sitting there looking none too pleased was Sona, flanked by Tsubaki and Saji.
"S-Sona, it's good to see you. You're looking nice this evening," Kenjin said. Sweating heavily, hoping his compliment would quell her anger. It in fact did not. What it accomplished was turning her glare up to eleven.
"Why thank you for the compliment. Now, is there anything you want to tell me?" She stated, crossing her arms. While sending him the most intense glare that would freeze the wildest beast.
"Nothing I can think of at the moment," he uttered lamely. It was the wrong answer, for as soon as he gave it, the aura surrounding her became pitch black. Making him pale and sweat even more than he was.
"is that so? Then let's start with your confrontation with the Fallen. If not that, how about you being part of the supernatural community?" She exclaimed in frustration and disappointment. "Were you even going to tell me?" she demanded, her tone low and barely audible.
He froze, unable to give a decent excuse or reason at the moment. Unable to meet her gaze, he turned away.
"I see. Rias thank you for including me in this meeting. I've gotten what I desired from this, thank you," she said in an even tone. Giving a quick farewell to the others and not even sparing him a glance as she and her subordinates left the room.
The room sat in silence after her departure. Koneko still eating her sweets but shooting a glance every so often. Kiba looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here. Asia and Issei were sending him concerned looks. Rias looked a little sheepish, and Akeno had a large smirk.
Rias soon broke the awkward silence, gesturing him to take a seat on the now unoccupied couch.
"She just needs time. Sona doesn't like to be kept out of the loop," she said delicately.
He just nodded, not really paying attention. His mind was swimming, realizing he messed up big time. While trying to come up with ways to apologize.
"Now, for the reason, I called you here. I first wanted to state my utmost thanks for saving my servants," she said nodding his way. He waved it off, like he stated with Issei it was an even effort.
"The next issue is with you," she stated, and seeing the confusion on his face, continued. "As you know, the supernatural is made of many groups. The top three being the Devils, The Fallen, and Angel faction. Now while I know you are unaffiliated your actions at the church. Could be viewed as an associate to the devil faction."
Which made sense. His interfering could wind him in hot water with the other factions.
"Usually we'd do a full investigation to make sure you can be trusted. But we can wave that with an endorsement from me. Unfortunately, this would bind you to the Devil faction, limiting your options. Last, I would like to propose an alliance between my group and yourself. Sona and her's would be included due to us working together." She finished taking a sip of her tea.
She gave him a moment to think it over. It would help him by opening new avenues. "I can agree to an alliance, but first what are the terms," he asked.
She summoned a contract via magi and handed it over for him to read. It was pretty basic. Basically, both he and the devil faction would-be allies from henceforth. Protecting him while also binding him with several rules.
First was no attacking of their assets and people. Be they lower devils or those of higher status.
Second, it provided him with free movement in many devil holds. So long as he obeyed the laws.
Third, both sides would share any intel gained that pertained to the safety of the underworld and devils.
Forth he was exempt from becoming a servant unless his consent was issued. While also going further by saying he had to be in the right state of mind. If they forced him to join under a spell or a concoction, the Devil responsible would be imprisoned. With the trial overseen by the four satans. With compensation decided at a later date.
Five, they could issue him missions such as stray eradication. If the local devils in his area were occupied with other matters.
Six, a discount could be awarded if his services proved to be beneficial to them. The elder council would issue the amount depending on his feats.
Seven, he was to avoid any Fallen or Angel holdings, to avoid any international incidents. While also stating he could leave the agreement. So long as he didn't know any high-value secrets or possess any artifacts given to him by the devils.
He read it over slowly. This was very beneficial for him in terms. Likely due to him being essentially a disposable piece for them to use. That they could deny all knowledge of. Honestly, he had little choice nodding to Rias he quickly signed the paper. She smiled and sent it to be officially be recognized by the council.
For the next two hours, he conversed with Rias and her peerage. Kiba was nice but a little distant. Koneko seemed to warm up to him quickly. Asia was already a surrogate little sister to him, and Issei was a friend. Rias was not as serious as she appeared. While Akeno was just a huge tease with her attempt to make him blush. Soon he had to leave so they could perform their evening duties.
Two days later:
Kenjin found himself in front of Sona's door at her house. He'd gone to the student council room only to be denied entry. She was still angry, so he let it sit. He eventually went to Rias on ways to apologize. Informing him, to be honest, and upfront. She also told him Sona had a liking for cinnamon buns. While also giving him her home address if she kept dodging him.
So here he was with a bag of cinnamon buns, staring in awe. 'She never told me it was a mansion,' he mentally exclaimed. Deciding it was now or never, he knocked. Only waiting a few moments before the door opened and Momo peeked out.
"Kenjin, what are you doing here?" she asked in confusion.
"I, um, need to talk with Sona," he returned, unable to meet her gaze.
She nodded, guiding him inside and escorting him to the study. Turning to leave, she gave him quick good luck. He knocked softly on the door and entering when a voice told him.
Entering, he saw Sona finishing some paperwork at her desk. Looking up, her gaze turned icy as soon as it met his. He gulped and quickly gathered his courage.
"So what brings you to my home Mr. Akai" she inquired in a bitter tone making him wince.
"I came to explain my actions and seek your forgiveness. I came to Kuoh because I lost my family to the Fallen years ago. So when I heard the Fallen were going to hurt a friend I lost it." He paused, allowing him to calm down. Sona's glare had reduced, and seeing it, he continued. "I also was afraid of ruining our friendship as I know the factions look down on rogue mages. In the end, I was an idiot and I'm sorry can you forgive me?"
He waited for judgment with bated breath. Eventually, she let out a long sigh. "I also wish to apologize. I overrated it's just when I heard how close you came to dying I was afraid of losing you. It also made me feel you couldn't trust me to help." she finished out of breath.
"So we're both idiots?" he asked, earning a small laugh from her. "I also brought Cinnamon buns I heard they were your favorite," he added. Nearly busting out in laughter at how her eyes instantly zeroed in on the treat.
For the following hours, they traded stories about their families. Easing the tension between them, neither notice how close they were sitting to the other.
