Sorry, this one took so long, I made it extra long just to make up for it!
If you can read and review please do! Gives me a gauge for how things are going and if people are liking it.
Also, I don't own the originals, TVD, just the characters I create myself.
In the early hours, just before the sun rose over Mystic Falls, Caroline woke up to the strong yet soothing heartbeat of Klaus Mikaelson. This morning every inch of his solid and impenetrable skin touched hers. Klaus ran hot, and that heat settled her into a precious serene sleep. In the past three weeks since she had called for his help, most of their mornings started like this. A quiet calm before the day flooded in. Usually, he would come in after midnight and hold her. Other nights he was with her all night, and they weren't sleeping for most of it.
They had no label or titles for what they were. Klaus didn't think they needed any, but if it gave her peace, then she was his. It was neither a demand nor request; it just was. He said with such confidence it delighted something primal in Caroline. When she asked him if that went both ways, the wolfish grin he responded with sent shivers up and down her spine. It was a look that told her, 'You're not ready for me yet, love.' It left her to wonder what it would be like to call Klaus hers.
Klaus needed both of them to be sure this is what they wanted before claiming her as his mate. Once he did, he would be relentless. The need of her and the overwhelm of their connection. Both of them being so connected they could sense each other's emotions and talk to each other mentally. What he had now with Caroline was beautiful but delicate. It needed to be handled with care.
It wasn't lost on her that their entire relationship, or whatever they were, was on her terms and at her speed. He knew how big control was to her. It was in everything she did and even infected her personality as a vampire. She didn't know the parents that made her or where she was made. She had no family, no connection to what helped create her. Caroline shook those thoughts away from her head. That didn't matter right this second. All she wanted to focus on was the toned arm draped across her back, holding her to Klaus. She wanted to savor the scent of his skin still kissed with a light touch his cologne. Savor, what a word. That is precisely what she wanted to do. She tried to remain perfectly still and take in everything she could.
Perhaps, Klaus had the same idea, or his fingers had a mind of their own. She could feel his index finger lightly tracing designs on her lower back. It tickled and tingled at the same time. Caroline looked up at Klaus's face and found his eyes still closed and his signature smirk on his lips. Had he fallen asleep like that? With a victor's smile on his lips. Had he won her? Was she a prize to be won? As a feminist, no. But, as a girl who was never anyone's first choice, she did enjoy being coveted more than she was willing to admit. He said she was his. She belonged with him. It should've irritated her.
Instead, it settled a deep need she had to be wanted. Liz tried to do that for her when she adopted her, but Caroline always felt like it was because she couldn't have kids of her own. Liz had to settle. But Klaus, who could have had anyone of his choosing over the span of 1000 years, chose her. Yeah, so sue her it did something to her lady bits.
Caroline's hand rested on Klaus's face, her thumb caressing his cheek. When he was around, she could feel this bubble of protection around them. Like she was untouchable. It felt like nothing she'd ever experienced, not even close. Caroline slid up slowly, softly placing her lips on his. He tasted like her mixed with the heat of summer. His arms soon shifted, wrapping themselves around her, and he turned her over, trapping her with his weight. His arms explored up and down her body. The conscious world drifted away, and the two lost themselves in each other all over again.
They wouldn't come to till a few hours later to the smell of coffee and voices coming from the kitchen. Klaus motioned for Caroline to be still and quiet. Both were using their hearing to detect who had entered her house without them noticing.
"It's 10:30 am! How much longer are they going to be asleep?" Katherine groaned, serving herself and Nyx a cup of coffee. Nyx served each one of them donuts she had brought. She wasn't going to stay long. Hopefully, they wouldn't know she was here at all. The Forbes Clan had been quiet in three weeks since they first showed up, and Caroline was basically permanently glued to Klaus. The donuts were to celebrate the win. It looked like they had got the message, and they would leave her alone. All worries gone for three weeks! That needed to be celebrated with fresh donuts, but it was short lived.
Katherine came to talk to Caroline, and a severed head greeted her on the doorstep. It was now on the back porch in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box. Nyx was called to dispose of it and insisted on bringing donuts. She shouldn't be there. Sure, Katherine wanted them to meet finally; they were sisters! But she didn't want Klaus to be around. Once he figured out what she could do, his power-hungry side would use her for all she was worth.
Nyx, for her part, was adamant to "not exist." Katherine worried about what would happen to her once all this was over. Assuming there was a happy ending where Klaus made Caroline happy, and he even gave up his vendetta against her. When Nyx's mission in life was over, what would she have to live for?
Nyx's hushed laugh still carried upstairs. At this point, they were so honed in they could hear a pin drop. Klaus was contemplating rushing downstairs to rip the intruder apart, but Caroline's hand on his shoulder held him there with her. "Give them a break, young love, and all that Jazz," Nyx said, taking a sip of her coffee. "You were young once."
"He's older than dirt! Besides, yes, I was stupid once, and look where that got me! Young love my ass! Speaking of which, you better get out of here if he sees you..." Katherine doesn't finish her sentence. An eye roll can be felt in the air. "Yeah, I know, you've told me a million times. Klaus would murder me with the wrath of 1000 suns. I got it. I got it." Nyx waved a hand in the air.
Klaus and Caroline look at each other. Without words, Klaus looked at Caroline, asking if she recognizes the voice. Caroline shakes her head no. "Her friend?" Caroline mouthed. It was the only person she could think of. Katherine had mentioned her more than a few times; she was supposed to be helping Katherine gather information. Caroline and Klaus had never met or even seen her. "Why is she here?" Klaus mouthed back? Caroline shrugged. She would talk about it with Katherine if Klaus didn't get to her first. It's not that she minded the company of people she trusted, but she couldn't afford strangers with things being as they are.
"Dude, chill. I'll be gone before the steam clears off their windows. I'm just here to bring breakfast, and you know, get rid of the head. You gonna tell them that the hunters left a message?" Nyx said, and Caroline's eyes widened from horror. Klaus didn't flinch. Severed heads made great messages, done right. He had used them himself many a time.
"First, eww. Second, Duh. Especially with how it looked like Matt Donovan. He was her boyfriend ages ago, but I think they were still friends. The least I can do is get it out of here, so she doesn't have to see it." Katherine says. Caroline buries her face in Klaus's neck. He holds her there, placing a kiss on the top of her forehead. He stills, focusing on the conversation downstairs.
"They're definitely trying to scare her, make her act without thinking. This act is loud and bold. It's been three weeks, right? It just doesn't make sense to wait three weeks before making a move. They could have been scaring her with things this whole time, made her react sooner." Nyx ponders. "I'm more concerned that they did it when Klaus was here," Katherine responds. "Have you found out anything else?" She asks.
"Of the hunters, maybe, but I won't know till later. I'm on it. In the meantime, I've also been watching her friends, you know, in case one of them is a traitor. No proof yet, but I see potential in a few. That Lockwood kid is definitely weak stock, he'd turn over in a heartbeat. Also, I sense a mutiny in the future." Nyx says with mild amusement. "What do you mean?" Katherine questioned, "That Elena chick is going bonkers. She goes to visit witches and asks for mortality potions. She went to see a dark witch not too long ago." Nyx says. Katherine doesn't connect the dots.
"Yeah, the idiot is looking to become human again; why would that cause a mutiny?" She asks.
"Because while she's looking for a magical cure, her friend and her kinda boyfriend are sneaking off into the woods to do the horizontal cha-cha. With Caroline on Team Klaus, all Elena has is that Stefan dude you like and maybe the teacher that can help her. We both know the clearance sale hybrid can't do anything. Speaking of which, the hatred he has for Klaus is eating him alive. He flip flops from Caroline being the victim and forced with Klaus, to her being his willing concubine. That boy is dumb; he can go, he can die." Nyx got up from her seat, finishing her coffee.
"What did I tell you? Wait. Bonnie and Damon, no! He is infatuated with Elena. Are you sure it was them?" Nyx nodded for the first time in months. Katherine saw Nyx come alive.
"That dude doesn't give two shits about Elena. Last Sunday, they were at the day fair, and she interrupted Bonnie. When I tell you, he glared at the back of her head so hard she tripped. It was hilarious!" Nyx chuckled. "They're my new favorite soap opera." She adds, taking a bite of her sugar twist donut. "Elena's annoying that doesn't prove anything." Katherine dismisses. Nyx grins.
"I caught them red-handed in the woods when I was looking for hunters. She was all like, 'oh, Damon, we can't do this to Elena. It's not right.' And he was all like," Nyx made her voice lower when voicing Damon.
"'What do you want me to do, stay with her? Keep pretending I'm all in? Sleep with her with the image of you in my head because, newsflash Bonnie, she doesn't do it for me anymore! You do.' And then he pulled her in all close and let me tell you when they kissed Kat when they kissed. That was not a first kiss type of kiss their mouths have met before; they were well acquainted." Nyx paused to bite her donut, and Katherine stayed wide eyed and open mouthed.
Nyx continued. "When they broke apart, she was all breathless like ' Damon...' and he was all hungry like 'Bonnie.' So anyway, he tells her that the only way they all win is to get Elena the cure. Which I think is a waste because he could just leave her. Who cares? Bonnie said she wanted to try to make a cure on her own, but he forbade it. I agree, btw, that's stupid. Bonnie tried to fight him on it, but he went all, 'look at me, I am the captain now,' on her, and she stopped. He would not even let her finish her sentence, and it wasn't long before they moved on to more forbidden things. I mean, I didn't stay, but when shirts came off. It was hot." Katherine could not believe the scandal.
"I don't know, Katherine that sexy bad boy love is in the air; you might get your happy ending yet. Stefan looks mighty single out here...all by his lonesome." Nyx teases, wiggling her eyebrows, and she gets rewarded with a pillow. She chokes down a laugh. None of this was of importance to Klaus. He was rather annoyed that they had wasted any time on this at all. He needed Caroline safe. He could go back to her friends and whip them into shape after to find a cure so he could get his hybrids. Caroline remained in his arms, shocked. It was too much to process at once. Matt…, but also she needed to talk to Bonnie, ASAP.
"I'm going to go. I'll keep you posted." Katherine nodded.
"See if you can find out what this means. Why a head?" Nyx nods. "There has to be a note somewhere. They wouldn't leave it with the head in case it got stained or lost. Maybe the mailbox or under the rug." Nyx slipped out the back porch. Katherine replayed the conversation in her head. Nyx was too calm, not even surprised at all by the severed head; was she hiding something. But why? Why would she hide something from her? They told each other everything.
Katherine checked the mailbox, and there was a note. She walked back inside. Klaus thundered down the stairs, Caroline right behind him.
"Where's the note." He demands before Katherine can even see it. She hands it over to him, worried about how much they heard. She'd assumed they were still asleep or … distracted. Clearly not the case.
Klaus reads it. "To the happy couple, may there never be trouble in paradise." It didn't make sense to any of them. They would have to figure out the details of the missing head later. The pair had bigger fish to fry.
"Katherine," Caroline says seriously.
"You know who's after us don't you?" Caroline asks, staring into her eyes. Katherine nods. There is nothing she can do. She has to say something. Klaus will be able to smell her lying, and he'll kill her on the spot. Nyx would not get another chance with Caroline, and Caroline would be very screwed.
"I know that they are after you, yes." Katherine stands strong but remains cautious.
Klaus grabbed Katherine by the throat, his vampire face coming out with rage. "Who are they?" He growls. "Klaus, let her go, let her speak, and then we can decide if that's necessary," Caroline said there was a hint of a threat. Deep down, she didn't want to do this to Katherine, but she couldn't ignore the red flags.
"They're hunters outside of New Orleans. They are known as the Forbes clan. It appears to be your mother's relatives. They're supernatural hunters; we're still working out the details." Caroline rejected the news right away, but the more it processed, the more she could see it filling in answers to questions she had. Caroline thought back to her mother's letter and wondered if she had mentioned it. Growing up, her mother taught her about always having silver and iron weapons handy to protect herself. Her hatred of vampires at first. All things Caroline assumed she would have learned here. But then when her father came to kill her…
Tears ran down Caroline's face.
"There's more, right? Why do they think I'm married to Klaus?" She forced out.
"I don't know how this came to be, but she told them that you were with Klaus to scare them into leaving you alone. When she died, he kickstarted something. Now they are here. That's what I know." She says. Caroline stayed shocked for a few minutes before the rage took over.
"Why wouldn't you just tell me all this! Why hide it! I trusted you!" She yelled.
Klaus punched the table, resolve on his mind. He smelled the air singling out the scent he needed. "Klaus, where are you going?" Caroline asks. Katherine gets a sinking feeling in her stomach.
"She's not telling us everything. The girl you were with knows a hell of a lot more than someone who just came to help you. She's quite comfortable with Caroline's home, her friends, her life. I'm going to find her, and you already know what comes after I find her." He threatens.
"No! Caroline, please stop him he'll torture her! She's innocent!"
Caroline took a step back, shaking her head.
"No." Caroline says, looking at her dead in the face. She turns to him. "Happy hunting." Klaus smiles the devil's grin, kissing her on the lips. Her hand rests on his cheek. Their eyes connect, and she sends him a silent message to be careful. He answers back with a look of the same cockiness he always has before he leaves. He's the Alpha, the original hybrid.
"Caroline, what did you do? You sent him after her!" Katherine grabbed her phone. Caroline didn't move to stop her. She didn't need to help. Klaus would get to her before Katherine did.
"You forced my hand when you lied." She answers calmly. Her tone, cold. "Who is she, really?"
"Important Caroline, she's important."
With that, Katherine speed off.
