Sunday came around and I was preparing for my meeting with Marylin, not entirely sure what we'd be talking about in all fairness. I barely remembered the conversation I had with her assistant a while back. I decided on going business casual, seeing that it was Sunday and I figured my meeting wouldn't require a suit through and through.
Marylin was ahead of time when I got the call in my office from the front desk. I had decided on tackling a file or two from my desk until my guest would arrive, and was surprised I was almost as far now as I had been when I sat down behind my desk.
"Show her up to the conference room," I asked Binkie and made my way towards the conference room a moment later. I took my laptop with me and a notepad with a pen, not sure what I would need and what this would be about really.
"Beautiful," Lester greeted me when he stepped of the elevator, coming from a workout session. "What are you doing here on a Sunday?" he asked, pulling me in a soft hug.
"Meeting," I said as only explanation at which he drew up both his eyebrows.
"On a Sunday?"
"Was the only day that really worked," I shrugged and saw Binkie coming up with Marylin a second later. He seemed surprised to meet me already in front of the elevator, literally welcoming him. But his surprise was nothing compared to Lester's once he saw who Binkie was with.
"I'll be with you in a second," I just said to Marylin, who nodded and smiled at me before being guided towards the direction of the conference rooms from Binkie.
"Is that…was that…?" Lester asked, seeming perplexed for a moment.
"Jupp," I just said, setting myself in motion toward where Binkie and Marylin had walked off to. And before Lester could come back from his stupor and offer to sit in on my meeting I increased my speed and was a second later at my destination. I closed the door as well as the blinds partially, knowing that thanks to Lester it wouldn't take too long for a small crowd to assemble magically in front of the room. Maybe RangeMan hadn't been the best of ideas come to think of it.
"I realized too late that maybe I should have offered a meeting over lunch or the likes, at Pino's or Sal's – that would have maybe been a better option," I admitted after both of us had sat down.
Marilyn only laughed at my remark and shock her head. "I actually like this meeting option a lot more. In a restaurant I usually end up getting noticed too much for us to actually have a meeting and discuss what we're about to discuss. Here it is quiet and normal and no one is waltzing in every few moments."
I understood her reasoning all too well and had never seen it from that point really. It was hard enough when you were the Bombshell Bounty Hunter with people always finding the time for some comment during the heights of my bounty hunter career. Imagine that a hundred times worse with a lot more requests when being a Hollywood star.
"I need to be honest, I don't remember an awful lot in regards of the conversation I had with your assistant a while back. I remember her saying something in regards of a job that we could maybe help you with, but… we never really got down to the specifics of what it was you needed."
"I'm in the market for a new security team really. Well, technically just really one guy I suppose, but even he will want to take a few days off occasionally I assume. Normally everything in regards of that gets handled by my assistant or management team really, but since their last two options didn't leave me impressed – to put it mildly – I figured, since it's about me, I could look into this by myself. Plus, I read this really impressive article about you – well, several ones actually – in the papers and thought that you seem to be one of very, very few women in this business, maybe you'll have a better handle on things."
"You want RangeMan to handle your security while in Trenton?" I asked professionally, making notes on my pad as she talked.
"Well, I'll be in Trenton only for a few more weeks and I was actually thinking more in regards of my security once I'm back home in LA. Like, my general everyday security."
At that I dropped my pen for a moment, not entirely sure what to think. This was… unusual. And unexpected.
"We don't have an office in LA or its vicinity," I said, thinking how far out Helena and Denver were away from LA. Judging by her expression she had done her research and was aware of that fact. Though, she seemed embarrassingly taken aback about my statement.
"I wasn't…I mean, I'm sorry if I hadn't really thought this through. I just thought…," Marylin almost stammered and seemed embarrassed.
"I… I'm sorry, I didn't mean to state it that obvious or make it sound like this wouldn't be an amazing idea or opportunity for us. I just would need a bit of time in regards of thinking this through and possible logistics. I'm certain it won't be much of a problem and I was thinking of adding another location to the network. California had made the top 3 on my list, but I hadn't actually made it any further. Maybe if you could tell me what it is that you need – and more importantly what it was that made you feel not good about the last two options – I'll gladly look into things and get back at you with possibilities?" I offered and saw her momentarily relax.
"You don't have female employees by any chance, do you?" she asked, smiling a second later.
"Not really. I'm pretty much the only girl in the entire operation," I shrugged, noting with a big fat exclamation mark on my paper that I definitely needed to look into that, seeing that this could probably open quiet a few options for RangeMan in regards of business that wasn't reached by now.
"How does it feel being the only girl in charge of all this testosterone?"
I laughed at her question for a while, knowing how odd this must seem from the outside.
"You'd be surprised how in touch some of these guys are with their feminine side," I laughed some more and saw her joining. "But I get how it must seem strange, especially with all of these guys looking like the toughest SOB out there. But all of them are actually really great to work with and pull in a lot of hard work, but also don't seem to intimidated by a woman running the show."
"That's good and seems to be the opposite to my previous experiences. Not sure whether it's the LA component or just the job in general, but with my previous security I always felt… uneasy. I was never able to fully relax. It wasn't like they did an awful lot, but I always felt… odd. I'm not expecting to become best friends with my bodyguards, but feeling like an obligation in a way and not a good way was not helpful either."
"You mentioned being in Trenton for a while, so maybe we can try a few options in regards of people and see how you feel with them. I'm almost certain there will be a longer list of volunteers to guard you if you agree. We'll see what you are comfortable with and what works or doesn't work for you and we'll take it from there. Once we figured out what it is that you'd like we can take it from there. By then I'll most likely have come up with an idea and a few options in regards of LA," I suggested and saw her looking at me warily for a moment.
"This sounds like a really good idea to be honest. And I'm surprised how quickly you came up with it," she admitted and I laughed.
"While I take that compliment, it wasn't the hardest solution. It would have been different if you'd said you'll leave for LA tomorrow and require a plan."
We went over her idea what she felt she wanted or rather needed and I put up a list of MerryMan I technically could see in her idea. It was a long meeting, longer than I initially had anticipated. When I got up to get us coffee, water and maybe a few snacks from the breakroom I was surprised to still find quite a few guys outside the room or on the floor in general. Sundays were usually really slow and there wasn't a lot of activity on the floor itself. Mainly monitors was occupied but that was it. So seeing all these guys had me guessing Lester really must have talked. Or Binkie. It could of course have been someone completely random as well – there were after all quite a few people in the building who could have just randomly crossed paths with my guest – but in the end it wasn't really a problem. They didn't bother us and seemed just curious. I knew there would be questions – and probably quiet soon as well – and was not surprised when I found Lester as well as Bobby and Ramos in the break room.
I raided the kitchen for coffee and water, grabbed a few piece of fruit as well as other things I could offer my guest and enjoyed the suspension in the air. I could feel all three men were keen on asking a lot of questions, but it seemed they either waited for me to break the ice or didn't know how to approach things. Despite the fact that RangeMan had quite an impressive portfolio and a long list of loyal clients that made the company a lot of money, I think I don't remember one instance of a celebrity client.
Our kitchen meeting ended with all of us just looking at each other, a smile playing at my lips, wondering how long they could keep this up. In the end it was Lester who would break first.
"You are not ging to tell us anything?" he asked, sounding a cute mix between annoyed and surprised.
"What's there to tell?" I asked amused and grabbed another apple just for good measure.
"Well, I mean… that is Marylin Swanson with you in that conference room and… we might be just curious what this is all about?" Bobby asked careful, with Ramos nodding next to him excessivly.
"When there is something to talk about I'll let you know. She just stopped by for… personal reasons. Seeing we went to the same school back in High School and were the same year and met again at the reunion all these months ago, she just felt like checking in again," I lied. There was no need to tell them what was exactly going on when I myself wasn't sure whether this would pan out and what to exactly do in regards of her request.
All three seemed surprised and in a way disappointed, so I took that as my sign to leave and get back to Marylin.
"So, tell me how it is to run a company like this being the only girl? In the profile I read in the papers a while back there wasn't a lot of focus on you being a girl in a rather male industry."
I laughed at her question and answered all the questions she seemed to have, finding it curious that she was the celebrity and I should be asking all these questions about male colleagues and film projects past and future and yet, here she was, seeming to be more of a fan of me than I was of her.
When Marylin eventually left I was surprised to realize that it had been almost three hours since she arrived. I think I never had a three-hour meeting before, unless it was a budget meeting or in regards of finances and these were by now down to more or less ninety minutes.
I retreated from the conference room to my office, noting that the floor was almost empty again. Guess the guys didn't have patience to stick around for three hours in the end. I finished what I had started before Marylin had arrived and started afterwards on my notes from the meeting. It was yet unclear what I could do in all regards and wasn't sure how to actually start working on every single issue her request entailed. It started with people and who of the Merry Man was working out best for this job and span all the way to the question of logistics and how to technically handle this once in LA. It was a question of what to actually charge and how go from there and what the costs should entail should we really consider an LA based client.
Marylin had given me at the end of our meeting three days' time to get back to her with a decision and maybe some options of what I had thought about and I knew I would need these days. I needed to think things through and not get blinded by the idea of a movie star on our clientele list. As much as having her as a client would raise our profile, set us a bit apart from the rest and also generate probably a healthy climb in our clients in general, I also knew that technically we didn't need any of it. We made good money and business was blooming so my decision thankfully didn't rely on a monetary aspect and a need to thrive.
Figuring that the 'right now' situation should be tackled first, I went through my list of possible Merry Man, the roster for the next few weeks and a few of the things Marylin had mentioned were important for her. I crossed of a few names of my list when I realized they had things that couldn't be postponed, had requested for leave or vacation and ended up with a list of four candidates: Lester, Ram, Hector and Manny. Hector was the wild card in this. On one hand would it go perfectly well since he wasn't very talkative and spoke little English, making the issue about possible gossiping almost non-existing – not that any of the Merry Man would actually gossip during a job, but Hector wouldn't even allow that argument to arise – but due to his tattoos he was less blending in. I sent emails to all four of them, requesting individual meetings come Monday and went on in regards of money as well as a general idea what could make LA happen. I wanted to keep this under wraps until I had figured what could or couldn't work and was writing down ideas until I could barely keep my eyes open. Just then did I close my laptop, took my notes and called it a day, impressed with how productive the last few hour actually had been. Maybe this wasn't going to be as much of an issue as I had initially thought.
