Chapter 1
Bilbo Narrating: "My dear Frodo, you asked me once if I had told you everything there was to know about my adventures. And while I can honestly say I have told you the truth, I may not have told you all of it. I am old now Frodo. I'm not the same hobbit I once was. I think it's time for you to know what really happened.
Bilbo begins to write his adventures when we see amap of Middle-Earth stretching far to the east.
Bilbos voice over: "It began long ago in aland far away to the East. The likes of which you will not find in the world today."
The map reveals the city of Dale full of people ridingrides and trading in the market.
"There was the city of Dale. Its markets known far and wide, full of thebounties of vine and vale, peaceful and prosperous. For this city lay before the doors of the greatest kingdom in Middle-Earth, Erebor.
Cut to a solitary mountain with alarge gate with two gigantic dwarfstatues outside asif they were protecting the mountain from invaders.
On the inside were dwarven soldiers standing erect for their king as he passed them by.
"Stronghold of Thror, king under the mountain. The mightiest of the dwarf lords. Thror rules with utter surety, never doubting his house would endure, for his line lay secure in the lives of his son and grandson."
Thror sits upon his throne in a hall with dwarfstatues overlooking the throne room as Thrors son and grandson walked to meet and bow to their king.
"Ah,Frodo. Erebor. Built deep within the mountain itself, the beauty of this fortress city was legend. Itswealthlay in the earth, in precious gems hewn from rock, and in great streams of gold running like rivers through stone."
The dwarves of Erebor worked inforgesmine shafts gem deposits crafting objects of the precious metals and jewels they found.
"The skill of the dwarves was unequaled. Fashioning objects of great beauty, out of diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire. Ever they delved deeper into the dark.
One dwarf miner dug into the mountain and unearthed a white gem that was glowing bright and sounded like it was singing.
"And that is where they found it. The heart of the mountain, the Arkenstone.
The arkenstone was put on display above Thrors throne with Thrain and Thorin by Thrors side as the Elf king Thranduil of the greenwood visited Erebor.
"Thror named it the king's jewel. He took it as a sign that his right to rule was divine. All would pay homage to him. Even the great Elven king, Thranduil. But the years of peace and plenty were not to last. Slowly the days turned sour, and the watchful nights closed in."
The Sun set on Erebor as the darkness came. Torches were lit on the walls and gate.
"Thror's love of gold had grown too fierce. A sickness had begun to grow within him. It was a sickness of the mind. And where sickness thrives bad things will follow."
Thror was in the royal treasure room clasping to the gold in his hands. Thorin was at the door helplessly watching as Thror's greed began to consume him.
In Dale a strong began to blow with kites in the air one looking like a dragon.
"The first they heard was a noise like a hurricane, coming down from the North. The pines creaked and cracked in the hot dry wind."
Thorin looked outside and realized the cause of the wind.
"Balin, sound the alarm. Call out the guards, do it now!" said Thorin.
"What is it" asked Balin
"Dragon"said Thorin
Thorin turned inside to warn his people of the impending doom that was upon them.
"DRAGON"!!!
Bilbos voice over: " He was a Firedrake from the north."
The attacks the city of Dale, the heralds blew the trumpets warning the citizens as they were panicking and running for cover. Some made it while others burned
Bilbos voice over: "Smaug had come! Such want on Death was dealt that day, for this city of men was nothing to Smaug. His eye was on another prize. For dragons covet gold with a dark and fierce desire.
As Smaug starts to attack Erebor, Thror makes his way to the throne room, grabs the Arkenstone. When he sees Smaug in the golden room he drops the jewel into the treasure as Smaug was settling into his plunder losing the Arkenstone forever.
"No!" Thror said as he was trying to go after it but Thorin grabbed pulled him back with his sword pointed at the dragon.
Bilbos voice over: "Erebor was lost. For a dragon will guard his plunder for as long as he lives."
Thorin helped his people out of the mountain "Run for your lives!" He looked and saw the elves coming with Thranduil on his stag marching toward Erebor. " Help us!" Thorin called to the Elves, but Thranduil stopped them and does nothing. Leaving the dwarves to fend for themselves and went home.
Bilbos voice over: "Thranduil would not risk the lives of his people. No help came from the Elves that day. Nor any day since. Robbed of their homeland, the dwarves of Erebor wandered the wilderness. The once mighty people brought low. The young dwarf prince took work where he could find it, laboring in the villages of men. But always he remembered the mountain smoke beneath the moon, the trees like torches blazing bright, where he had seen dragon fire in the sky, and a city turn to ash. And he never forgave, and he never forgot.
Back at Bag End in the Shire Bilbo continues to write his story and lives with his nephew Frodo.
Bilbos voice over: "That my dear Frodo, is where I come in. For quite by chance, the will of a wizard, and with the help from the most unlikely of creatures, fate decided I would become part of this tale. It began...well it began as you might expect. In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty wet hole full of worms and oozy smells. This was a hobbit hole. And that means good food, a warm hearth, and all the comforts of home."
Frodo walk into the room with letters in his hands and handed them to Bilbo as he was still writing his adventures down.
"Thank you" said Bilbo.
"What's this" Frodo asked? Referring to the picture of Bilbo when he was young with a mouse on his shoulders. "Is that mouse wearing a cape and an amulet?" Frodo asked again.
"That is private. Keep your sticky paws off!" said Bilbo.
Frodo tried to sneak a peek at the book but Bilbo closes it.
"It's not ready yet"said Bilbo.
"For what"? Frodo asked.
"Reading. What on earth are these?" asked Bilbo.
"Replies to the party invitations"Frodo answered.
"Ah! Good gracious! Is it today?" Bilbo asked.
"They all say they're coming, except for the Sackville-Bagginses, who are demanding you ask them in person" said Frodo.
"Are they indeed.Over my dead body"said Bilbo.
"They'd probably find that quite agreeable. They seem to think you have tunnels overflowing with gold." said Frodo.
"It was one small chest, hardly overflowing. And it still smells of troll. Bilbo said.
Suddenly Bilbo got up, ran to the kitchen, and started to stuff all his silverware and cutlery into his pocket and hides all his other expensive items.
"What on earth are you doing?" Frodo asked curiously.
"Taking precautions. You know I caught her making off with my silverware once." said Bilbo.
"Who"asked Frodo?
"Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. She had all my spoons in her pockets. Dreadful woman. Make sure you keep an eye on her after I'm...When I'm...When" Bilbo said hesitantly.
"When you're...what?" Frodo asked.
"It's nothing. Nothing." Bilbo said reassuringly
"You know some people are begging to wonder about you uncle. They think you're becoming odd." said Frodo.
"Odd"? asked Bilbo.
"Well unsociable" said Frodo.
"Unsociable, me? Nonsense. Be a good lad and put that on the gate." Bilbo said as he gave him a sign that read: No admittance, except for party business.
Frodo nails the sign to the gate as Bilbo steps out of Bag End.
"Do you think he'll come?" Frodo asked.
"Who?" asked Bilbo.
"Gandalf." said Frodo.
"Oh he wouldn't miss a chance to let off his whiz poppers. He'll give us quite a show, you'll see." said Bilbo.
"Right then. I am off." said Frodo.
"Off to where?" Bilbo asked.
"Eastfarthing woods. I'm going to surprise him." said Frodo.
"Well, go on then. You don't want to be late." said Bilbo.
Bilbo sits on his bench, pulls out his pipe, and starts to smoke and reminisce about his younger days.
Bilbo voice over: "He doesn't approve being late. Not that I ever was. In those days, I was always on time. I was entirely respectable, and nothing unexpected...ever happened.
