The following day, Carla registers Juan and Lita at the local school, and Lizzy is made an emergency contact, just in case.

"I don't want to go to the new school," is the first thing that Lita says when Lizzy tells her she can finally start in her new school. "I want to go to Harding with my friend Paige and all my other classmates."

Lizzy tells her it will be okay, she will make new friends, but this results into another argument with Lita about her not wanting to make new friends. The big sister hopes the class activities will keep her occupied enough so she doesn't think about her old school. When they drop Juan off at his side of the building, he stops to take a deep breath and then marches on. No complains, no arguments, but no signs of excitement either.

Once the kids are registered, Carla walks with Lizzy to the local high school and helps her get registered there as well. Lizzy starts classes after lunchtime, which just makes the whole process feel even more awkward. New school, new teachers, new classmates… all over again. But this is for the last time, right? Because she's finally with the only person in the world who loves her no matter what. This is going to work, she thinks as she makes her way through the run-down high school hallways. She's going to make it work.
