Another long one settle in.
Ch. 27 It's a Dark Road We're Heading Down
(DAMON)
"Dammit!" I growl when I try calling Clare for the third time that hour and she doesn't answer. I let the first two go as them having sex, Clare would not answer during that, but Klaus might just to piss me off. At this point though she should have answered and I'm getting angry but mostly worried. I call Klaus, and he doesn't answer, so I decide it's time to go over there. "Stefan get in the car," I call to my brother.
"What's wrong?" He asks coming down the stairs.
"I've called Clare three times in the last hour and she hasn't answered. I just called Klaus and he didn't answer either, we're going to his place."
"Didn't you say she said they were going out?" Stefan asks even though he follows me to the car.
"Yes."
"So, they probably aren't there, out usually means out of town for them," Stefan comments as I start the car.
"I know, but I'll feel better going over there," I reply.
We drive to Klaus' in silence but Stefan does text Ric to tell him. When I get to the house Klaus' car is gone. I park and get out of the car going to the door, it's not locked and I go in.
"Damon they aren't here, who knows when they'll be back. You can call her again in…" Stefan is saying but stops suddenly running over to pick something up.
"What?" I question and Stefan turns to show me her phone. "Fuck! They could be anywhere and she doesn't have her phone."
"I'll call Klaus," Stefan says, getting out his phone. "No answer, let's go home, I'll call Ric on the way," Stefan comments. I growl but get back in the car and start driving home. As soon as I'm driving Stefan calls Ric.
"What's going on?" Ric asks.
"Klaus and Clare are gone, her phone is here, we have no idea where they are," Stefan tells him.
"That can't be good, how's Damon?"
"I'm fucking peachy," I say loud enough for Ric to hear me.
"Should I come over?" Ric offers.
"Not yet, I'll call if we need you."
Ric says okay and Stefan hangs up. As soon as we're home I pour myself a drink, swallow it down and pour myself another one. I stay up drinking all night and Stefan stays up with me. A little before dawn my phone rings and it's Klaus.
"Klaus where the he…"
"It's Clare," she says, cutting me off, "Klaus left my phone at the house."
"I know, we went there and found your phone. Where the hell are you?"
"I'm fine," she says quietly.
"Not what I asked, and you don't sound fine," I reply.
"Klaus doesn't want me to tell you where we are."
"Clare wh…"
"If she tells you where we are, you'll come spoil the fun. She'll see you Monday Salvatore," Klaus says and hangs up on me. "I'm going to kill him," I growl tossing my glass at the wall.
"Could you hear anything to tell you where they were?" Stefan asks.
"Just the squeak of bed springs."
Stefan brings me some blood and makes some coffee. Ric shows up later in the morning, not sure if Stefan called him or Ric just decided to come over. He's there all day, and Clare never calls me again, Stefan and Ric drag me to The Grill that evening in a poor attempt to distract me from thoughts of killing Klaus.
"Hey," Jeremy says, joining us at our table, "Clare called."
"Did she say where she was?" I question.
"No, she wouldn't tell me, only that she was fine and would see me Monday," Jeremy replies.
"Maybe she told Adam," Stefan says. I should have thought of Adam sooner but I was too busy thinking of ways to kill Klaus.
"I'll call him," Jeremy and I say at the same time. We both get out our phones but I move faster than he does and dial Adam first.
"Hi Damon," Adam answers and I can hear voices in the background including Drew and Dallas and a few other noises.
"Have you heard from Clare at all?"
"Yeah, she called a couple hours ago, said she was out of town with Klaus and wouldn't tell me where. Swore she was fine though, and that she'd spoken to you earlier."
"She did, and she gave me as much information as she gave you."
"Did she tell you Klaus purposely left her phone at the house?"
"Yeah, he taunted me about it, doesn't want me to come find them which has me really worried."
"Yeah, me too. Somehow when she's with Klaus and she tells me she's fine I don't believe it."
"Agreed. If you hear from her, call me back," I request.
"I will, she promised to video chat tomorrow, maybe I can see where they are."
"Thanks Adam," I reply and hang up.
"What'd he say?" Jeremy asks.
"She said she was fine but wouldn't tell him where they were. She promised to video chat with him tomorrow, he may be able to see where they are and if he does I'm going."
Clare calls me again from Klaus' phone the next morning but says the same thing. She's fine, and she'll see me after school Monday. She calls Jeremy and tells him the same, then she video chats with Adam. He calls me after to say she did it from the washroom and all he could see was white tile. It's a very very long Sunday and by that night Stefan and I drive back to Klaus' house to wait. We wait for hours and it's not until the sun is coming up that I hear his car approaching.
"You're awfully impatient Salvatore," Klaus says with a smug grin as he gets out of the car.
"What did you do to her?" I growl seeing Clare slumped over in the front seat.
"She's asleep," Klaus spits at me as I open the door. When the door opens Clare opens her eyes.
"Damon? What are you doing here?" She questions as I help her out of the car.
"Taking you home," I tell her softly and then look at Klaus, "Her things, now," I demand.
"Do I look like a bellboy?" Klaus questions with his teeth clenched.
"I'll get them," Stefan says, running into the house.
Clare has Klaus' coat over her and I take it off of her. I can't help but rove my eyes over her in the tight black minidress. It goes to her knees with a slit up to her hip bone on the right side. It's strapless with a slit down her cleavage that shows far too much of her breasts.
"I bought it for her, she needed an appropriate wardrobe for Atlantic City," Klaus smiles.
I grit my teeth, I should have known they were in Atlantic City, it's just the kind of place Klaus loves. I sneer at Klaus but Stefan comes out of the house with Clare's backpack and phone. I get Clare in our car and Stefan hops in as I begin driving.
"I'm going to rip that thing off you as soon as we get home," I tell Clare.
"I have to get to school, we don't have time for that," she replies.
"Are you alright? What happened this weekend?" Stefan asks.
Clare pauses and bites her lip looking out the window. It's the fact that she's not answering that has me worried.
"What happens every weekend I'm with Klaus, we ate, he paraded us around as if we were the greatest people in town, because in his mind we are, and, we had lots and lots of sex," she replies with an annoyed tone, yet it sounds like she's holding back. "That's all we ever do, I don't know why you all keep asking. I kept in touch with you, Adam and Jeremy this weekend."
"Yeah, and you told us all the same thing, and you didn't sound fine. You wouldn't tell us where you were," I point out.
"Klaus didn't want me to, he didn't want you to find us," she says, still looking out the window.
"I don't give a fuck what Klaus wants, you could h…" I stop as something occurs to me, "did he compel you not to tell us?"
"Like I said, he didn't want you to find us."
"SO, HE COMPELLED YOU NOT TO TELL US!"
"Damon it's too early for yelling," Clare says as I pull up to the house and she jumps out of the car. "I'm going to go change for school," she says before running into the house.
"If he compelled her not to tell us he's probably compelled her before," I rumble.
"Yeah, I know," Stefan replies patting my back as he gets Clare's backpack in his car. Then he runs into the house for his own backpack.
"He could have compelled her to do anything and I don't believe for a second she's fine when she's with him. I'm taking her away again this weekend, anything to keep her from him again."
Stefan gives me a look just as Clare comes out of the house. She says she's ready to go and starts walking for the car when I grab her hand. I pull her into my arms and take her lips for a salacious kiss.
"I'll see you at lunch," I tell her when I pull away.
"See you at lunch," she grins.
I watch her drive off with Stefan and go into the house. It's early for them to be leaving for school, but I'm sure she didn't want to be at the house where I could ask her questions. They'll stop and get coffee, and probably hang out in Ric's classroom, maybe even go to the Gilbert house. I'm meeting with Liz but not until later, as much as I'd like to drive to Klaus' and beat the crap out of him I know it won't end well. I take a shower and drink some blood, and leave for Liz's early.
"Something to be worried about?" Tyler asks when I get out of my car. He's clearly here to pick up Caroline.
"Generally, yes but just here for my usual check in with Liz."
"I thought you'd be waiting for Clare's return," Tyler says.
"Did that, she's home, she says she's fine, she's at the school with Stefan. How was Pennsylvania?"
"Great," Tyler smiles, "Klaus might be an evil smug son of a bitch but the pack was great. I'm going out again, during a full moon next time."
"Hey Damon, you can go in," Caroline chirps as she skips down the stairs.
"You are way too happy to have your wolfman back," I comment.
She just smiles and leaps onto Tyler giving him a passionate kiss while I go inside the house. I spend about half an hour with Liz, but there's no new threats she's heard about and as far as she knows no one new in town. When I return home I check in with my witches, but they have no new information and are still looking for a way to kill Klaus. There is the dagger that the siren had, but I don't know what happened to it after Nathan was killed. When it's getting close to lunch time I leave for the high school.
"Hi," Clare smiles when she sees me waiting at the door, "let's eat alone."
"Fine by me," I grin, taking the lunch box from Stefan and we go to my car.
"Klaus called," Clare says as she begins sipping her blood bag and I stiffen.
"What did he want?"
"He's going out of town and isn't sure he'll be back this weekend. He said he'd come get me if he was back before Sunday," she tells me.
I clench my teeth, I'm sure that Klaus going out of town is a bad thing. I also don't like the way he told her he'd come get her, as though she's a package.
"I don't suppose he told you where he was going or what he was doing?"
"No, he wouldn't tell me anything."
"Has he compelled you to do other things?"
"Damon," she snaps.
"It's a legitimate question."
"Yes, and he's compelled me not to tell you so I can't," she replies and I growl. "Will you stop thinking about Klaus? I'm not hurt, I returned alive and we're probably better off not knowing what he's up to this weekend."
"You're a vampire now, even if he had hurt you this weekend you'd be healed by now. I prefer to know what trouble Klaus is up to because it often comes back to bite us."
"Like me?" She questions.
"There's an exception to every rule," I grin leaning over to kiss her neck, "though you do bite."
She smiles and leans over extending her fangs and slowly sinking them into my neck. She takes a couple of sips and then licks my neck. When she's done she sets herself in my lap and takes my lips. She kisses me until it's almost time for the bell to ring.
"So, without Klaus what would you like to do this weekend?"
"I'm pretty sure you already know the answer to that question," she responds, running her fingers over my crotch as she gets off my lap. "I'll see you after school," she says, getting out of my car.
I watch her run back into school and start my car, only I don't go home. I drive to Klaus' and he's waiting near the door when I park.
"You dropping by is getting to be a nasty habit Salvatore," Klaus says.
"Where are you going this weekend?"
"As I told Clare I have some business to attend to and I don't know how long I'll be away. I don't leave until Wednesday, I told Clare she should spend the next couple of nights with me. She refused, I'll just have to make up time with her next weekend, take her somewhere else nice."
"What else have you compelled her to do?" I bark, running forward and pushing him into the side of the house.
Klaus growls, baring his fangs and his eyes darken, he shoves me away with all his strength. I go flying back and hit a tree, I feel bones breaking and healing almost instantly.
"Back off Salvatore, if it wouldn't cause such a problem I'd kill you right now," Klaus says with his arm against my neck. "Clare would never forgive me if I killed you, but I am a lot stronger than you. Now get back in your car and off my property."
He runs back into the house and I'm too sore to follow him. It wouldn't do any good anyway, we'd fight and break some of his stuff, he'd win because he's stronger and I have no way of truly killing him. There's a good possibility that in the fight though he could kill me. I pull myself off the tree and drive home, drinking four bags of blood to help me heal. I'm still a little sore when I pick up Clare from school.
"We're going home and I'm going to call Adam, drink a blood bag and then I'm going to tear off all your clothes," Clare says after greeting me with a kiss.
"Sounds like a perfect afternoon to me."
(JEREMY)
"Elena, you gonna sleep all day?" I question knocking on her door. It's after ten Saturday morning and usually my sister is up by now. I haven't heard or seen her all morning though. "Elena?" I call knocking on the door as I open it. Her bed is unmade, her window open.
Looks like she left very early but usually Elena makes her bed before leaving. I shrug and go downstairs, no evidence that Elena had breakfast. The house is quiet, Ric is already gone, and as usual I'm the last one awake. I almost make breakfast, but then decide I'd rather eat with my girlfriend or at least be with her if she's already eaten. I get my shoes on, grab my wallet and keys going out the front door, stopping when I see Elena's car still in the driveway. I get out my phone and call her but it goes straight to voicemail. I call Stefan next, she's most likely to be with him or Bonnie.
"Hi Jeremy."
"I don't suppose you dropped by really early and picked up Elena?"
"No, she's not there?"
"No, but her car is, her bed isn't made either. I didn't hear her get up though, she's not very quiet in the morning."
"I'm on my way," Stefan says and hangs up. I call Ric next, there's a possibility she left early with him.
"Hi Jeremy."
"I don't suppose Elena is with you?"
"No," he says slowly, "I'm at The Grill and she's not here. When I left she was still sleeping."
"No, her car is still here but her room is empty and her bed is unmade. I called Stefan, he's on his way and she's not with him. I'll try Bonnie, but I don't have a good feeling."
"I'm coming," Ric tells me and hangs up.
I call Bonnie but she doesn't answer so I leave a voicemail asking if she's seen Elena. Finally I call Caroline, she's with Tyler and says Damon already called and they haven't seen Elena. Caroline says she and Tyler are looking and so is her mom, and they'll call if they find anything. Just as I'm hanging up with Caroline Stefan pulls up with Clare and Damon in the car.
"Anything?" Stefan asks getting out of the car.
"Ric hasn't seen her but he's on his way home and Bonnie didn't answer."
"You didn't hear anything last night?" Damon asks me.
"Nothing, neither did Ric, I have no idea when she left," I tell them as we go back in the house. As soon as we're inside the vampires run up the stairs to Elena's room. I follow them to find them looking around the room.
"What's this?" Clare questions looking at the window sill. She reaches her hand out to touch something and Damon runs over grabbing her hand before she can.
"Do not touch strange substances," Damon warns her.
I go over and look at the window sill, a substance that looks like slimy ash is on Elena's window sill. It makes this awful streak all the way out the open window. I'd say nothing could take her out that way, but I know the vampires can get in that way.
"Something took her," I exhale.
"We don't know that yet Jeremy," Stefan says with a hand on my shoulder. We all hear the door open and we go out to see if it's Elena, but it's Ric.
"Anything?" He asks.
"Some odd substance on the windowsill," Clare tells him.
"Well, that can't be good," Ric comments. He comes up the stairs and we show him the windowsill. He looks at it, runs downstairs and returns with a jar and knife from the kitchen, scraping some of it up. "I've never seen anything like this before, I can take it to the school, try and figure out what it is, but I'm not sure that will help us find Elena," Ric comments looking at the substance.
"If we know what it is it might," Stefan comments and we all jump a little when my phone rings.
"It's Bonnie," I tell them, pulling the phone from my pocket before answering.
"Did you find her?" Bonnie asks.
"No, just some weird slimy ash on her windowsill, Ric was going to take it to the school and try to figure out what it is."
"There's something I can try, I'll call you back," Bonnie says and hangs up.
"Jeremy go to Bonnie's and see what she's thinking, call us when you get there," Stefan says to me.
"Clare go with him, we'll go to the school," Damon says.
I take Clare's hand and we go down to my car, driving to Bonnie's house in silence. When we arrive Clare calls Damon to say that we're here. We get out of the car and I knock, but there's no answer. I try the door and it's unlocked so we go in. It's a good thing Clare has been to Bonnie's before and already been invited in. Otherwise Clare would be stuck at the threshold.
"Bonnie, it's me and Clare," I call into the house. She doesn't respond but we can hear faint chanting coming from her room. The chanting stops before we get there, Bonnie's door is slightly open. I don't hear anything and I push the door open slowly, "Bonnie?"
I open the door and Bonnie's lying on her bed, it looks like she's sleeping. I rush over and see her nose bleeding, grabbing a tissue from her bedside I wipe her nose.
"Is she okay?" Clare asks.
"Magic, it takes it out of her," I tell Clare as Bonnie opens her eyes.
"Call Stefan," Bonnie says weakly, "I know where Elena is."
I get out my phone and call Stefan immediately, "Bonnie says she knows where Elena is."
"Under the school, she's under the school. Old tunnel," Bonnie says weakly.
"Under the…" I start relaying when Stefan cuts me off.
"I heard her, I think I know what she's talking about. We'll go down, you three stay there."
"They have to go now, Elena is alone," Bonnie tells me.
"We're going," Stefan says and hangs up.
"I'll get you some water," Clare comments leaving Bonnie's room.
"Are you okay? You were passed out again, I hate when you do that," I scold her.
"I'm okay Jeremy," Bonnie smiles, "but I'll be better when I know Elena is safe."
"You and me both," I comment just as Clare zips in with some water.
"I love vampiric speed," Clare grins, handing the glass to Bonnie.
"Last time we used a locator spell to find Elena you needed my blood and the best you could do was narrow it down to a town. So, how did you get it down to something as specific as an old tunnel under the school?"
"I found a new spell in the grimoire," Bonnie says, setting the now empty glass on the nightstand.
"A locator spell?" I question.
"Something like that," Bonnie replies.
"Do you need anything else?" I ask her.
"No, just to rest and know that Elena's okay," Bonnie replies.
She lies back and closes her eyes, taking my hand. Clare starts idlily looking around Bonnie's room while something on the floor catches my eye. An old book, but it doesn't look like the grimoire I've seen.
"What's this?" I inquire, picking up the book.
"It's the grimoire," Bonnie says, snatching it out of my hand and putting it under her pillow. "You know, I'm hungry, could you make me a sandwich Jeremy?" Bonnie requests.
"Yeah, sure, stay with her Clare?"
"Of course," Clare nods.
I go to the kitchen and make Bonnie a sandwich, bringing it to her with a glass of juice. When Bonnie is nearly done eating my phone rings, I pull it from my pocket and see that it's Stefan.
"Hey Stefan, did you find her?"
"It's me Jer," Elena says and I feel a weight come off my chest.
"Elena, thank goodness, are you okay?" I question. I'm sure Clare already heard Elena's voice and when I say Elena's name Bonnie smiles with relief.
"I'm fine, we're going home," Elena says.
"We're still at Bonnie's, we'll meet you there," I tell her.
"Damon is calling Caroline but I don't think they're coming over."
I say okay and hang up with Elena, Bonnie puts her plate down and gets on her shoes, I drive us back to my house. Stefan's car is already here and I run in followed by Bonnie and Clare. Elena is at the table and Ric is making her some breakfast. She hops up when she sees me hugging me tightly. After hugging me she hugs Bonnie.
"What happened?" Bonnie asks when Elena lets her go.
"I wish I knew, I was sleeping and then I felt a hand over my mouth. I couldn't scream, couldn't fight, I was being taken out my window. Whatever it was it wasn't vampire or werewolf, it was…I don't know. I couldn't really see it, when we hit the ground I was sprayed with something and I passed out. I woke up tied up in the dark, no idea where I was until Stefan, Ric and Damon came in and got me out. How did you know where I was?"
"Bonnie tried a new spell," I answer for her.
"It's a good thing you did, I don't know that I would have been found," Elena smiles at Bonnie.
"I'm just really glad it worked," Bonnie smiles.
"We got you out, but someone is still after you," Stefan says while Ric puts a plate of eggs and sausage in front of Elena.
"Klaus or Katherine?" I question.
"Klaus has kidnapped you before?" Clare asks.
"When something bad happens it's usually Klaus or Katherine, or one of Klaus' siblings," Elena clarifies.
"Siblings?" Clare queries.
"Has Klaus told you anything in all the time you've spent together?" I question her.
"Apparently not enough," she says, "Klaus is out of town it seems odd that he'd do anything to Elena now."
"It could also just be well orchestrated by Klaus, but I don't disagree. Katherine is more often than not the issue. Elena being her doppelganger usually means Katherine is trying to kill her or kidnap her," Stefan remarks.
"So, how do we find out who's after Elena now and why?" I speak up.
"If they know Elena is gone they will try again, maybe you should stay with us for the rest of the weekend, all three of you," Stefan offers.
"Stefan's right they already took you from your room they could be back. They also took you to the school, so if we don't figure out who it was by Monday then I don't think you should be alone at the school. I don't think Klaus had anything to do with this but I'll call him," Clare says.
"You think he would tell you? Seems like going out of town presents him with a perfect alibi," I remark.
"I think he would have taken me with him, he'd know that I would want to help Elena and if he thought there was a danger to me he wouldn't have left me here. I know Klaus is not an angel and he's done many awful things, but I'm fairly certain he'll be truthful with me if I ask him."
"I don't like Klaus, but I do agree with Clare. If he were going to cause something that was a potential danger to her he would have taken her with him," Damon says.
"I'll go call him," Clare tells us, running outside.
"Ruling Klaus out doesn't really help us, we still don't know who took me or why," Elena remarks.
"You three should definitely sleep at Stefan and Damon's tonight. I can put some wards on your house to keep out anyone unwanted while you're gone. I need to go home and get my grimoire though," Bonnie comments.
"I can run you home to pick it up," I offer.
"No, you need to pack and I don't live that far, besides it will work better if you guys aren't here when I put up the wards," Bonnie replies. "Be safe, I'll call you later," Bonnie says, kissing me softly. She hugs Elena and then leaves, Clare comes in right after Bonnie leaves.
"Klaus said he has nothing to do with it, and he doesn't have any use for the doppelganger currently. He did say that others might, but aside from Katherine didn't know of anyone specifically. He didn't give me his exact location, but given that everyone around him had British accents, I'm thinking somewhere in England. I saw Bonnie leaving as I came in." Clare tells us.
"She went home to get her grimoire, to put wards up at the house. I offered to drive her but she said it would work better if we weren't here," I inform Clare.
"Putting up wards is probably a good idea," Clare nods.
"I'll start packing, we should set up some traps and warning systems around your place as well, just in case this thing can track Elena," Ric comments.
"I'm gonna shower before I pack," Elena says finishing her food. "Come up and stay with me?" Elena requests pulling at Stefan's hand.
"Of course," he grins.
I follow them upstairs going into my room to pack, Alaric does the same. It doesn't take me long to pack, but I take enough for two nights just to be safe. When I leave my room and go downstairs Alaric and Damon are packing up weapons. We take three cars back to the Salvatore house, Elena rides with Stefan in his car. Damon asks me to take Clare in my car so he and Alaric can discuss weapons and traps. Clare doesn't look happy about it, but she does come with me in my car.
Elena spends all afternoon in Stefan's room with him. I don't want to know what they're doing, but Clare assures me they aren't having sex. Damon and Ric spend all afternoon setting out early warning systems and traps in case whatever it was comes back for Elena. Leaving Clare and I to entertain ourselves for the afternoon.
"I'm going to video chat with Adam, you want to join me?" Clare asks.
"Sure," I smile.
I follow her upstairs to her room, she takes her laptop from the desk and brings it over to her bed. She sets the laptop in front of her and I sit next to her. She brings up the video chat program and clicks on Adam's name.
"Hey Clare, hey Jeremy," Adam grins when he answers and then his face changes, "something wrong? Why are you both calling?"
"Elena was kidnapped some time last night but we got her back. Elena, Jeremy and Ric are all sleeping here tonight, maybe tomorrow. We still don't know what took her or why," Clare explains.
"I so wish I didn't know there were "whats" to worry about," Adam responds.
"Yeah, me too," I agree.
We spend about an hour talking with Adam, we finish about the same time as Damon and Ric. Elena and Stefan are still in his room, but when I call that we're going to The Grill to eat they come out of his room. Caroline and Tyler meet us there, I try calling Bonnie but get a voicemail again. I leave a message telling her we're all at The Grill if she wants to come down and meet us. I never hear from Bonnie, but the rest of us eat. Well, the vampires don't eat but they do have coffee or alcohol. I try calling Bonnie again when we get back to the Salvatore house but still no answer. I'm not sure if she's at our house putting up wards, or just tired after the spells. I spend a fairly restless night at The Salvatore house worried about my sister and my girlfriend. Just after two in the morning I get a call and it's Bonnie.
"Bonnie? What's wrong?"
"You don't have to worry about Elena being safe at the house anymore Jeremy I fixed it."
"What?" I question sitting up. "What do you mean you fixed it Bonnie?"
"I took care of it, I need to rest now," Bonnie says and hangs up.
I try calling back but there's no answer. Worried about Bonnie I get dressed and get my shoes on. I grab my phone and my keys trying to exit the house as quietly as I can but I'm in a house with vampires.
"Where the hell do you think you're going Jeremy?" Damon asks, appearing on the steps as I'm trying to go down them.
"Bonnie called, she said she fixed it, that we don't have to worry about Elena at the house anymore. Then the line went dead, I'm going over to check on her," I say in a whisper but I know Damon heard me.
"Call when you get there," Damon says. Clare comes out of his room, I was sleeping in hers, wearing one of Damon's shirts and nothing else.
"Do you want me to go with you?" Clare questions.
"No, I just want to make sure she's okay, I'll call when I get there," I assure them.
"Fine, if I don't hear from you in twenty minutes I'm coming after you Jeremy," Damon says.
I nod and leave the house quietly, getting in my car and driving straight to Bonnie's. I call Clare's phone to tell them I'm here when I park at Bonnie's house. Only I don't see Bonnie's car, and if I knock I'll wake her dad. Her room is dark and when I try calling her she doesn't answer. I'm still worried but I can't see Bonnie and she's not answering her phone, and I don't want to wake her dad, so I call Damon back.
"How's the witch?" Damon asks.
"I don't know, her room is dark, I can't see in, her car isn't here and she's not answering her phone."
"Did you try your house Jeremy?" Clare asks, she must have taken the phone from him. "She said she was going to put up wards at your house, maybe she was there."
"Right, of course, I should have thought of that," I reply slapping my forehead. "I'll go to our house and call you when I get there."
I hang up and get back in my car making the short drive to my house. The lights are out but Bonnie's car is here. I get out and go through the front door, I call out to Bonnie but get no answer. When I turn on the light though I find Bonnie asleep on our sofa.
"Bonnie," I say, shaking her gently, "Bonnie wake up."
"Jeremy? What are you doing in my room?" She yawns.
"You're at my house, you fell asleep on the sofa. You should get home, let me take you home," I tell her.
"Guess I was tired after putting up the wards. I can drive myself home, the wards are pretty powerful, but we still shouldn't stay here," Bonnie says as she stretches and gets up. We both jump when my phone rings, it's Damon.
"She's here, just tired, I'm going to follow her home, make sure she makes it okay and I'll be back," I tell him.
"Okay, if you see anything call," Damon says before hanging up.
"Come on, I'll follow you home," I tell Bonnie, putting my arm around her and taking her outside.
I lock the house again while Bonnie gets into her car. I follow her back to her house and wait until she's inside before driving off. Clare and Damon are up and dressed in the living room. I wave to them and go up to bed, I sleep until almost one on Sunday when Elena forces me out of bed. I still feel tired, I call Bonnie after I eat, she says she's fine, but there's something she has to do today and she'll see me tomorrow at school. We stay the night at the Salvatore's again, nothing happens, though I'm sure whoever or whatever is after Elena hasn't given up. After all they took her to the school, which means the greatest danger may be waiting for her at school tomorrow.
