A/N
Finally an update. I lost my mojo for my WIP's for a while and decided to do some shorter prompts. Slowly getting back into things. This chapter got unexpectedly dark between Gina and Alice and I wasn't sure how I felt about it tbh. But there are also some beautiful moments that I hope you enjoy.
C.W implied child abuse, mentions of violence.
Magic abroad in the air
Alice looked at herself in the mirror, tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, and looked down at her swollen belly. She self-consciously smoothed the deep purple fabric of her dress over it and bit her lip. She was struggling to find new ways to hide her pregnancy and while she still wasn't ready for the news to be made public knowledge, some people had guessed. She'd taken to wearing looser fitting clothes at work and when she was out, but here, at home she felt free to show off her little bump. She was growing so quickly that Jean was having to make alterations to her wedding dress on a daily basis. She saw Matthew appear in the mirror behind her.
"Stop fidgeting sweetheart, you look beautiful." Matthew reached out a hand and enveloped Alice's trembling one in his own.
"What if she hates me?" Alice stared at their joined hands unwilling to meet Matthews eyes.
"She's your sister."
Alice pulled her hands out of Matthews gently, "Who I haven't seen in over 20 years, Matthew anything could happen!" She rubbed her neck anxiously. "We've never met as adults, the last time she saw me I was 13!"
Matthew immediately pressed a kiss to her neck where she had rubbed and lightly trailed his fingers along the line where his lips had touched. "Well did she say anything in your phone calls to give you any reason to believe she's unhappy with you?"
"No, but…"
He interrupted her gently, "Well there you go." He brought her hand up to his lips and kissed it gently. "I know you're nervous sweetheart, just try to breathe."
Alice looked at him in the reflection of the mirror and tried to steady her racing heartbeat.
"Whatever happens, just remember. This time tomorrow I will be your husband," he smiled at her.
Finally Alice turned to Matthew and looked him in the face. "And I will be your wife," she gave a quivering sigh as she shook her head in disbelief and smiled. "That still sounds so foreign."
Matthew smiled gently at her. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm equal parts terrified and excited. Do you think it was a bad idea asking them to stay here?" Before Matthew had a chance to answer her question there was a knock on the front door. Colour drained from her face and she clutched at Matthews hand. "They're here!"
Matthew squeezed her hand. "Are you ready?"
"As I'll ever be." Alice took a deep breath and let Matthew lead her out of the bedroom.
When they got to the door Alice took a deep shaky breath. Opening the door she gasped as a familiar stranger stared back at her. The same brown hair as Alice remembered, though it was cut shorter, the same kind blue eyes. She held a small girls hand and beside her stood a curly black-haired man holding a sleeping child.
"Ali?"
"Gina!"
The two sisters reached for each other at once, and enveloped in her sisters arms, Alice felt immediately loved.
"I can't believe it's really you!" Gina sobbed as tears ran freely down her cheeks.
Alice smiled through her own tears. "I never thought I'd see you again."
Alice had imagined this reunion in her mind multiple times and now, standing with her sisters arms around her, she knew there was no way she could have imagined this. Here she was, Awkward Alice, who didn't like to be touched, hugging this stranger. Only she wasn't a stranger, She was her own sister. It was familiar and foreign all at once, But above all, It felt like home. Not a home where they'd been mistreated and miserable, but one where they had the sort of childhood they should have had. One where they were loved, and wanted. Alice inhaled deeply and realised she even smelled familiar.
The girl on the ground who had been staring at them, pulled on her father's pants leg. "Daddy? Why is Mummy crying and hugging that strange lady?" she whispered, a little too loudly.
Georgina Hart wiped her eyes with the back of her free hand, the other firmly clasped Alice's. She looked at the child.
"Lou, This is mummy's sister, remember I told you about your Auntie Alice?" The child said nothing, but inched closer to her fathers leg, her suspicious eyes still glued to Alice. "Alice. This is my oldest, Louise. My husband Scott, and my other daughter Renee."
Alice looked at them with interest and reached her hand out and shook Scott's hand. He smiled and the smile reached his kind eyes. "I'm so pleased to meet you." She wrapped an arm around Matthews elbow, "Gina, Scott, This is Matthew, my fiancé." The two men shook hands, but Gina bypassed the hands and embraced Matthew in a surprise hug. "Thank you," she murmured, "Thank you a hundred times over. For reuniting us, and for loving Ali."
Matthew held back his own tears as Alice invited them inside.
Once they were all comfortably seated in the lounge room, Louise quietly playing with a puzzle, Matthew offered tea and biscuits.
"I'll come help," Scott offered as he passed the still sleeping child to his wife, "Two sugars George?"
Gina nodded. "Yes please. The early morning has exhausted me."
As the two men left for the kitchen Alice turned to her sister. "George?"
"That's what they're calling me these days," she smiled, "No one's called me Gina since we were kids."
Alice shifted nervously at the mention of their childhood, but no further reference to their parents was made. "Do you… want me to call you George then?"
"Ali, you can call me whatever you like, I'm just so happy to see you."
Alice smiled slightly. "No one ever called me Ali, but you. Matthew sometimes calls me Al, but never Ali."
The small dark-haired bundle shifted in Gina's arms restlessly as Renee opened her bleary eyes and looked at Alice. "Oh look who's woken up."
"Daddy?" the small voice questioned, rubbing her eyes.
Gina rolled her eyes at Alice, "I know where I rank." Turning her attention to the child on her lap she continued, "Daddy is in the kitchen."
Renee pointed at Alice and made an enquiring noise.
"This is your Auntie Alice."
Alice smiled nervously at the child. "Hello Renee."
Renee held out both arms to Alice. "Cuggles!"
Gina looked to Alice, "You want cuddles with Auntie Alice?"
The child nodded vehemently.
"What do you say?"
"Pees!"
Alice was mortified, "Gina, I don't know that…" but her protests were halted as, aided by Gina, Renee half crawled onto her lap where she sat back with a thump, stuck her thumb in her mouth and sighed happily.
Alice looked to her sister with a panicked expression, "What do I do?"
"What do you mean?"
"Do I have to hold her a certain way or something?"
Gina hid a smile. "Ali, have you never held a child before?"
"Not really. Children usually find me odd."
Gina shook her head with a smile. "All you really need to do is make sure she doesn't wriggle off your lap and fall."
Alice patted the child's head distractedly as Matthew and Scott came back from the kitchen, both hands holding mugs of hot tea. Matthew was quite amazed to see Alice's arm around her niece who was seated on her lap.
"Now Renee, are you going to stay still while Auntie Alice has a cup of tea? Or will you get down?"
"Stay," the girl said stubbornly.
"Well you know the rules about sitting on mummy's lap when she has a hot drink? They are the same with Auntie Alice. And you have to be extra careful with her."
"Hot," Renee repeated, and blew as if blowing on hot food.
"Clever girl!" Alice spoke to the child whose eyes lit up at the words of praise. She sat incredibly still as Matthew handed Alice a mug.
Louise had been watching them with interest, and at this, she climbed on to her mothers lap. She eyed Alice critically then turned back to her mother. "Mummy, Auntie Alice has a baby in her tummy."
Alice, who had just taken a sip of tea, almost choked on it.
Matthew grinned at Alice, 'how would she take this?' he wondered.
Alice wiped her face and looked at Gina in amazement.
Gina smiled at Alice's response and then looked to Louise. "She does. That baby will be your cousin."
"I'd like to have a cousin." Louise looked up at Alice who smiled slightly. "Can it be a boy? I want a baby brother, but mummy says I can't have one," she pouted.
Alice looked at Matthew, then back to Louise. "You're like your Uncle Matthew over there," she said to the child, indicating her grinning fiancé who was loving being referred to as 'Uncle Matthew', "He'd like the baby to be a boy too."
"Fat chance," Gina scoffed as she rolled her eyes at Alice. "Harvey's have girls."
"That's what I've been telling Matthew, But he's still convinced it's a boy."
Renee tapped Alice's arm to get her attention. "Me pees?" she pointed to herself.
"Sorry?" Alice blinked and shook her head, "I don't understand."
"She wants a sip of your tea." Gina rolled her eyes. "Scott let her do it once and now she thinks she can do it every time."
"Oh," Alice blinked again. "Too hot," she nodded down to her niece.
Renee's face fell, then she looked back up to Alice. "I blow?"
Alice was so surprised she held out the mug.
"Renee, don't forget, we blow them out like candles, no spitting," Gina cautioned her daughter who nodded solemnly and blew softly at the mug. Alice felt her heart melt.
"We're into spitting," Gina indicated Renee as Alice looked shocked that such behaviour would come from this little angel in her lap.
The front door slammed, and they heard voices in the hallway. Lucien and Jean had returned from doing the grocery shopping.
"We're in the lounge!" Alice called to them.
Jean entered the room, followed by Lucien, who's eyes almost bugged out of his head when he saw the young girl perched on Alice's lap. Jean elbowed him as he made a snorting sound.
"Gina, Scott, this is Jean and Lucien Blake who I told you about on the phone. This is their house."
Gina put her tea down and shuffled her daughter off her lap to stand. She embraced Jean as she had Matthew. "Thank you for letting us stay in your house."
Jean was slightly taken aback at the warm affection she was being shown by this stranger, but she smiled nonetheless. "Not a problem at all. We're so glad you could come,"
Moving to Lucien, Gina hugged him too. "Call me George," she offered as Jean shook Scott's hand.
After Lucien had shaken Scott's hand, he looked at the two children, "And who are these young ladies?"
Louise giggled at him. "I'm not a young lady, I'm a little girl!" she corrected him.
"Oh I do beg your pardon, but I thought you were a Princess!" Lucien swept in to a deep bow which made her giggle even more.
Alice rolled her eyes, "This is Louise."
Louise tipped her head to one side. "Are you my grandpa?"
Lucien was caught unawares by her question, "Uhh, that depends," he looked to Gina, who shrugged her shoulders, smiled and nodded.
"On what?"
"Whether you want me to be or not."
Louise held her arms out to him and he swept her up into his arms where she took his face in her chubby little hands and stared into his eyes, "I want you to be my Grandpa, you have smiley eyes."
"Very well then. I'm Grandpa Lucien."
Louise threw her arms around his neck, "I love you Grandpa Lucien!"
"And who is this?" Jean nodded to the child sucking on the edge of Alice's mug which lay forgotten in her hand.
"This is Renee," Alice provided.
"Well, if Lucien is Grandpa, I guess that makes me Nana Jean."
"Nana!" Renee echoed and held her arms up to Jean.
Scooping her up Jean turned to Gina. "You have the most affectionate children."
Gina smiled. "We've tried to raise them to be happy with anyone. I won't have a child clinging to my leg crying. But I must say, they don't usually take to new people so quickly."
Alice was relieved to have the child removed from her lap, but at the same time slightly disappointed. She felt her own child bump her from inside, and she covered her hand over the spot it had kicked. She sipped her cup of tea and watched the scene before her.
Gina sat back down next to her and put a hand on her knee. "This will be your child soon Ali."
Alice's face paled and she bit her lip worriedly. Lucien saw her behaviour change and nodded at Matthew that they should leave the two sisters alone.
Matthew got the hint thankfully. "Scott, how about we unpack the car and I'll show you where to put your things?"
Scott nodded, and they left to unpack the car.
Lucien looked at Louise who was still in his arms, rubbing her fat fingers through his beard. "How about we go and check out the garden?" he asked her, "Do you think we might find some fairies?"
Louise shrieked with excitement as Lucien put her down and off they ran towards the garden, hand in hand, followed by Jean, who carried Renee at a much more respectable pace.
"Gina…" Alice began, and then stopped unsure of whether she wanted to continue. In many ways her sister was a stranger, but she was her sister, and there was no one else she could have this conversation with. "How do I be a good mother?" she finished in a small voice. She looked to Gina, who saw tears in the corner of her eyes.
"Oh Ali"
"I'm so scared I'll be like…" she couldn't finish her sentence.
Gina reached for her hands and held them in her own "Alice, You will never be like our parents. You know how it felt to grow up unloved and unwanted." She reached a hand up to Alice's cheek and brushed a tear away with her thumb. "All you have to do is make sure your child never feels that way."
"That easy huh?" She looked down at where their hands were joined. "Have you, uh, heard anything about them?"
Gina shook her head. "Not a thing." She looked away stonily. "I hope they're dead."
Alice gasped and stared at her.
"Well don't you?"
"I haven't really thought about it."
"That policeman of yours, he could find out. If he found me he could find them."
"Gina, I'm not sure I want to know where they are, What would you do with the information if you found they were still alive?"
"Drive to their house and kill them myself." She spoke blankly without any emotion. She saw Alice's face and softened. "Alice you don't understand what it was like to not be able to protect your little sister from her own father's fists."
"Gina, I don't blame you for what happened. None of it was your fault."
"Ali, when they told me you had died, I felt so guilty. That you had survived the hell we went through, only to die when we were 'safe'." A tear escaped her eye and rolled down her cheek.
"Look at me Gina," Alice whispered. But Gina wouldn't, couldn't meet her eyes. "Hey," she murmered softly as she reached out a hand to grasp her sisters. "I'm right here. I'm not dead. We're both alive and happy. Gina, this is the best possible scenario either of us could have imagined. You've got a husband who loves you, and two beautiful daughters…"
Gina finally met her eyes with her own wet ones.
"And I'm about to marry the person I love the most, and we're having a baby. And we now have each other. Gina, I've put all that behind me. Forget about it, forget about them. They were useless parents, they're not worth our time. This, right here? This is my family. Matthew, Jean and Lucien. And now I have you, Scott and the girls."
"Oh Ali, I'm so sorry," Gina cried.
"Listen, didn't I just say there was nothing to be sorry for? Gina it wasn't your fault. The only one I hold any animosity to are our parents. And I'll be quite happy if I never see them again."
Gina sniffed and managed a watery smile, "How did you end up the sensible one?"
Alice just shrugged, "No idea" she smiled at her sister "It's still so surreal to have you here."
Gina leant forward and wrapped her arms around Alice and they embraced each other, full of emotion. "Surreal, but nice. I can't believe I can just hug you," Gina whispered into Alice's ear.
When they broke apart, both of them wiped their wet eyes and smiled through happy tears.
"Shall we go and see if Grandpa Lucien and Louise have found fairies?"
"Sorry about the whole grandpa thing, Lucien is very affectionate. And Jean doesn't see her granddaughter much, they live in Adelaide."
"Ali, I think it's great that they are happy to be substitute grandparents. It will make it all the nicer when we come up to see you. They're lovely people. I can see why you like them." Gina grabbed Alice's hand. "Come on, let's go see what they're up to."
As they watched Lucien chase little Louise around the backyard, Alice watched him. He really was just a big kid himself. She smiled as she felt her little one bump her again and wondered if Lucien would be like this with her child. She made a face as her energetic baby seemed to sit on her bladder, it was really moving about today, and excused herself to the bathroom.
Matthew watched her go and Gina didn't miss the way his eyes trailed after her.
"You really love Ali, don't you?" she murmered quietly to him.
"I do." Matthew nodded. "I loved her before I knew she was carrying our child, and somehow because of that, I love her even more."
"I'm so glad you two found each other." Gina rested her hand on his arm, "She needs someone like you in her life. I'm not sure how much she's told you, but we didn't get a whole lot of love growing up."
"She's not told me much outright, but I've put lots of the pieces together, over the years. She's a very private person."
Gina smiled. "Don't I know it! Strong willed, fiercely independent."
"Incredibly clever and kind," Matthew added in and smiled at Gina. "I think I'll just go and check she's alright."
"Matthew?" Gina called after him.
He turned and was surprised to see Gina fix her eyes on him seriously.
"If you hurt my little sister, I will come for you. Policeman or not. Got it?"
Matthew placed a hand on Gina's shoulder, "You don't have anything to worry about there."
Gina nodded, "Good," her smile returned to her face. "Now go see to my sister."
Alice looked at herself in the bathroom mirror as she washed her hands. The exhaustion had hit her and her feet felt heavy and hot. She stumbled out of the bathroom and sank into a lounge chair gratefully. She kicked her shoes off and closed her eyes. And felt two big hands cover her shoulders.
"Alice? Sweetheart?"
Alice smiled but didn't open her eyes. Matthews hands began to massage her shoulders.
"Are you alright?"
"Mmm. Just tired."
"Fair enough, It's been a big day for you."
"Tomorrows gonna be bigger."
Alice just smiled as she looked up at him and slipped her hand into his.
"In answer to your earlier question, no I don't think it was a bad idea asking them to stay." Matthew continued.
"You have no idea how incredibly odd it is to see her again, after all this time"
"She just threatened to come after me if I hurt you."
Alice smiled again. "Always the overprotective older sister." She exhaled loudly and her eyes began to droop once more.
Matthew saw her obvious tiredness. "Did you want to go have a lie down?"
"No," Alice closed her eyes.
"Are you sure?"
"I want to make the most of every second I have with my sister." She opened her eyes, "But if we're going to stay outside I might have to sit on the bench with my feet up. They're throbbing like mad."
"This we can do."
As Alice rose to her feet, Matthew brought her hands to his lips and kissed them both gently, one at a time. "I love you."
"Matthew." Alice said fondly as she kissed his lips, "We love you too." She felt an emphatic bump from within as if to agree with her words.
A little later as they watched the children in the garden, Matthew looked over to see Alice on the bench, fast asleep, with a smile still on her lips and a hand resting protectively on her stomach. As the autumn sun fell on her face, a soft breeze, ruffled her hair and Matthew couldn't help but smile, at the love of his life and mother of his child.
Gina saw this and her heart swelled. She knew Matthew would look after her little sister.
After an amazing dinner full of good food and laughter, they all adjourned to the lounge room. The children had brushed their teeth and changed into their night clothes. Gina was just finishing braiding Louise's hair when Renee, who had been spinning in circles in the middle of the room, stopped in front of where Alice sat on the couch.
"Up?" demanded Renee, stretching her arms up to Alice.
Alice picked up the girl gently and sat her on her lap, and Louise scrambled up to sit on the couch next to her. "Auntie Alice, will you read us a bedtime story?" She passed over a dogeared copy of 'The Little Red Caboose'.
"Oh. Um…"
Matthew saw her uncertainty and slid into the seat on the other side of Louise. "How about I help?"
Alice looked at him gratefully, as Louise clamoured on to his lap. Matthew winced as her small foot connected with his knee.
"Lou!" Gina admonished her "Watch your feet!"
Louise looked guilty "Sorry Uncle Matthew! Why do you have to walk with a stick? Do you have a sore leg?"
"Louise!" Gina hissed. "That's a personal question, you don't ask things like that!"
Matthew smiled down at his soon-to-be niece. "It's alright Louise, Natural curiosity. I had an accident at work and my leg doesn't work properly anymore."
"Mummy said you was a policeman. Did a bad guy shoot you?" Her eyes were wide.
Gina just put her head in her hands and shook her head in despaired amusement.
Matthew laughed. "Actually, I was marooned on a dessert island by pirates!" he whispered to her conspiratorially. "They made me walk the plank and swim to shore, and my leg was bitten by a shark!" He winked at Alice. "But don't tell your mum that. If she thinks that's the kind of company I keep she'll never let me marry Auntie Alice."
Louise regarded him quizzically, then burst out laughing. "You're funny Uncle Matthew!"
Alice rolled her eyes. "I think maybe Uncle Matthew has been learning how to tell silly stories from Grandpa Lucien."
Lucien grinned at Matthew and Alice as together, they read the requested story. Renee leant back into Alice, snuck her thumb into her mouth and curled a finger into her hair, and Louise was engrossed in the pictures of the train in the book. He heard a soft knock at the door and frowned. Who on earth was calling on them this late? He rose and left to answer the door.
Lucien returned moments later, grinning, followed by a brown-haired girl, who was astounded by the sight that greeted her. Matthew and Alice sat on the sofa with two children perched on their laps as they read them a story.
Jean caught sight of her out of the corner of her eye. "Mattie!" She shot out of her seat and wrapped her arms around the girl in a hug.
Alice looked up in surprise and met Mattie's eyes.
"Surprise!"
Jean wiped her wet eyes and let go of Mattie.
"What are you doing here?" Alice asked dumbly.
"Surprising you, you idiot, duh," Mattie grinned.
"I told you, you didn't have to come."
"I know. I wanted to."
"Why?"
"Ali!"
"Cos I'm your friend! Jeez!" Mattie rolled her eyes with a smile and then looked to the woman who had admonished Alice. "I didn't realise you had company. Sorry," She reached her hand out, "I'm Mattie O'Brien."
Jean interjected, "Mattie used to board with us."
Gina nodded at Jean and took Mattie's hand in her own, "Georgina, But most people call me George. Alice's sister."
Mattie shot a shocked look at Alice.
Gina saw the look and smiled at Mattie, "We've not seen each other for a number of years. We lost touch."
Alice finally stood and perching a drowsy Renee on her hip, put her arm around Mattie's neck to hug her. "I can't believe you're here."
As Matthew looked up, his heart gave a leap as he saw how natural Alice looked with a child at her waist. That would be their child soon. He smiled as introductions were made.
Alice tossed and turned in her bed. She kicked her legs madly. Ugh. She needed to get a good nights sleep. But her body, having had a nap earlier, had now decided she wasn't tired. She stared into the blank darkness above her as her very awake baby moved around particularly enthusiastically. She threw her blanket off, swung her legs over the side of the bed and sat up. She'd go and have a glass of water, go to the bathroom, and then, maybe then she would be able to get to sleep. Switching the bedside lamp on, she saw the time and groaned inwardly. 10.30. She'd only been in bed for 45 minutes. It felt like she'd been trying to get to sleep for two hours. After a quick trip to the bathroom she padded softly down the stairs, trying not to wake anyone up, very aware that the house was full of extra people. Gina and Scott were in Mattie's old room. Louise and Renee were in Lucien's old room and Mattie was asleep on the couch. She sipped her glass of water as the moonlight flooded the kitchen with a calm blue light. She turned, leant back against the counter and sighed as her stomach churned. She wondered if Matthew was having trouble sleeping too. She smiled to herself. Probably not. He was always the first to fall asleep. Usually within minutes of his head hitting the pillow. Any normal night she would have crept into his room and snuggled against him. But this wasn't a normal night. She tipped her head to the side and thought. Surely a good sleep, with Matthew beside her, was better than no sleep at all, alone? She crept down the hallway and pressed an ear to his door. Hearing nothing she pushed the door open a crack. As she had expected light breathing came from the bed where Matthew lay on his side. Eyes closed. Alice smiled and hesitated at the doorway.
"Either come in or go back to bed. Standing in the doorway like that, people will talk" came a sleepy voice.
A soft smile appeared on Alice's face. Matthew was awake. "I think we're well past caring about people talking," she slipped through the door closing it behind her.
Matthew chuckled sleepily, then cleared his throat. "Can't sleep?"
"Your child doesn't seem to want to settle."
"Our child." Matthew corrected as he turned to lay on his back. "It's half you, you know. And you're the night owl so whatever it does after dark, that's on you," he joked. "Are you gonna stand against the door all night or are you coming to bed?"
Alice crossed to the bed and slid in under the covers. "I wasn't sure if you would be alright with my being here. I know traditionally it's not the way things are done." She inched closer to his side and rested her hand on his chest.
"Traditionally you wouldn't be carrying our child, traditionally we wouldn't even be in the same house, let alone the same bed." He pressed a kiss to the side of her head. "Forget traditions sweetheart, we do things our way. And if this means you get some sleep tonight, it's no one else's business.
Alice felt their baby move as if it was agreeing to his words and she smiled. "We're getting married tomorrow," she uttered.
"We are indeed. So let's see if we can get some sleep shall we? Don't want you falling asleep before the 'I do's'."
Alice flopped onto her back. "It's not me you need to convince." She rolled her eyes as their child seemed to turn somersaults.
"Come on little one. Let your mummy sleep, hey?"
Alice shook her head with a smile as the movement stilled. "Not even born yet and it already listens to you more than me."
"I am a policeman. I have a naturally authoritative tone," Matthew teased as he kissed her nose, then moved his lips to meet hers.
Alice closed her eyes and relaxed into his kiss. She sighed.
"Goodnight sweetheart."
"Night" she whispered.
Minutes passed and Alice heard Matthew's breathing change. She had just closed her eyes and relaxed, when her baby bumped her again. Her hand instinctively reached for it, But this time, she didn't just feel the movement internally. There was a very definite shift beneath her hand. Her eyes went wide. She felt around, wanting to feel the contact with her hand again and was rewarded with another movement.
"Matthew?" she whispered urgently as she shook his arm "Matthew wake up!"
"What? What is it?" Matthew forced his eyes awake. "Are you alright?"
"Matthew! I'm more than alright," she took his hand in hers and placed it on her stomach.
"Whha?" Matthew was confused.
"Give it a moment," Alice cajoled him.
Matthew turned a frustrated face towards her, but was stopped as he felt the movement underneath his hand. His eyes shot down to where his hand met her belly and then lifted them back up to meet Alice's rapt eyes.
"Is that…?" Matthew couldn't finish the sentence as his voice cracked.
"Well it's not Jean's roast beef," Alice chuckled softly.
Matthews eyes were wide, "Amazing!" His wet eyes met Alice's blue ones and they shared a joyous smile. "You and I, we made that." He wriggled and shifted to lay on his side facing Alice.
Alice closed her eyes once again and this time, they both fell asleep, Matthews hand entwined in her own, resting on the proof of their love.
A/N
Louise and Renee are my two best friends middle names :)
Also. Excuse the mouthful that is Gina and Jean... didn't think that through and didn't want to change it by the time I realised.
Also. Yes I HAD to use the 'surreal but nice' line from Notting Hill.
