GrrraceUnderfire just posted a challenge to use one-word prompts to write a series of drabbles or mini snapshots. My first thought was "What? Hohoho. Write a story with only 100 words? Impossible." But that's because I like to talk. And talk. And talk. Brevity is not one of my strong suits.
But, you know, that just means there's an opportunity for me to improve myself.
So, this is not an answer to that challenge (which, as stated, is intended to be fulfilled this upcoming December). It is a chance for me to practice my writing and burn off a little creative energy.
These prompts come for the 2016 Inktober.
And now that this introduction is probably longer than the actual story, on with the show!
FAST
They ran through the forest like their feet had wings. In the distance, they could hear the rumble of an explosion. And, much closer, the shouts of angry men, hot on their heels.
One dry twig had blown their cover. But home was not very far. They could make it if they kept running.
And then, another terrible sound. The crack of a rifle made time slow down. He looked back and saw a burst of red. And then time snapped back as his comrade fell.
Kneeling beside his lifeless friend, he was shocked that the end came so fast.
