I had an idea for a series of one shots in which the various members of team avatar are turned into villains, but the other members of the team are otherwise the same. This means one each for Aang, Katara, Sokka, Suki and Toph, but not one for Zuko because he was already a villain in the first half of the show. This is the first one, Suki.
"She's too fast! I can't catch up to her!" Aang shouted, as they pursued Azula through the twisting corridors of the Fire Nation bunker.
Are you kidding me? Are you an airbender or not? Sokka thought, as Toph seemingly effortlessly incapacitated the Princess' Dai Li minion, but said nothing, for another, far more worrying, thought had soon replaced it.
"Wait! Stop attacking! She's trying to distract us! Don't you see what she's doing? She's not even trying to win this fight!"
Azula slowed to a stop in front of them and turned around.
"That's not true," she said. "I'm giving it my all."
Toph pointed in Azula's general direction accusingly.
"You're trying to keep us here and waste all our time!" She shouted angrily.
"Right, I think your friend just said that, genius," Azula replied, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"And since you can't see, just know that I'm rolling my eyes."
Toph did not take that well at all.
"I'll roll your whole head!" She snarled.
While Sokka would have paid money to see that happen, he knew that they had more important things to be focussing on.
"She's just baiting you again."
Aang turned to him, confused.
"Alright, then, what do we do? Just ignore her?"
"We don't have a choice. We just have to get out of here and find the Firelord on our own somehow."
With that, Sokka led the way as the three of them turned away from Azula and walked away from her.
"It's a trap, you know! Don't say I didn't warn you." Azula called after them.
Toph began to turn around, but Sokka held up his hand.
"Ignore!"
This worked, but Azula was soon shouting after them again, this time addressing Sokka directly.
"So, Sokka's your name, isn't it? My favourite prisoner used to mention you all the time."
Sokka stopped in his tracks, one word flashing through his head.
Suki.
"She was convinced you were going to come and rescue her. Of course, you never came, and she gave up on you."
No. That cannot be. She can't have done. Sokka felt a surge of sadness as he shut his eyes and get tears welling up.
But Azula clearly knows where she is, another part of his mind reasoned, and that knowledge turned Sokka's sorrow into rage.
He screamed in anger, turned, and charged at the Princess. She smiled grimly, and Sokka saw something shiny flick into her hand too late.
Fortunately, Toph was faster than either of them, and before Azula had a chance to stab him she had been thrown backwards against a wall, her hands pinned above her head. Sokka reached her and began screaming in her face.
"WHERE... IS... SUKI!" He bellowed, but Azula did not seem the least bit perturbed. She said nothing.
"Azula, where is she?"
Still nothing.
"Azula, I swear to all the spirits, if you do not tell me where she is I will take Space Sword and I will shove it-"
"Sokka!" Toph warned him, but he paid her no heed.
"Where is she?" He shouted desperately again.
"Sokka!" Toph shouted again, and this time she punched him on the arm.
"Ow! What was that for? I'm trying to interrogate this monster!"
"No, Sokka! What I'm trying to tell you is, well, look behind you."
Sokka turned completely away from Azula, and caught sight of a familiar figure standing a few metres behind them. The girl had auburn hair and wore the traditional uniform of a Kyoshi Warrior, but for one major difference.
The Kimono she wore underneath her armour was not green, but crimson.
"... Suki?"
"Sokka!" Suki replied, taking another step forward.
"Suki, thank goodness! Azula told me she had imprisoned you, that you had given up!"
Sokka couldn't help running towards her to embrace her, but before he got the chance he was screeching to a halt with a war-fan at his throat.
"... what's happening? And why are you wearing red?" Sokka was now confused, hurt, and had a sensation of dread settling in his stomach.
"It's lovely to see such a happy reunion," Azula declared behind them.
"I'm sorry, Sokka."
"Sorry? For what? You haven't done anything."
"... Azula, she came to my cell and she said, she said that either I worked for her or she would kill my warriors."
Sokka realised that there were tears in Suki's eyes, causing her face paint to run.
"Did she now." Sokka gripped Space Sword again. "Well, since you're standing in front of me I don't need Azula any more, so I can take care of that for you."
He moved to turn around and raise Space Sword at the Princess, only for Azula to laugh.
"Do you think I haven't thought of that? I've left orders that should I die, so do your precious friends. So do your duty, Suki."
Sokka turned to face Suki again, to plead with her, to reassure her, to say anything that might change this nightmare. Her expression was a mix of sorrow and anger, but a new emotion was now visible; determination.
"I'm sorry," she said again.
"Suki, no!" Sokka realised what was about to happen a second too late, as Space Sword was sent flying and he was sent crashing into a pillar. Suki moved too quickly for Toph or Aang, who were both too shocked to react, to do anything as she quickly freed Azula from her rock cuffs with a swipe of her fan.
"Suki, what are you doing?" Sokka pleaded, struggling to his feet again.
Azula merely sneered. "Deciding where her loyalty lies. Like I said, she gave up on you Sokka. She came to hate you for not coming, and in her despair the only person who offered her a way out was me."
Suki said nothing, presumably having been instructed not to contradict her, but from her position standing just behind Azula shook her head. The meaning was clear. She lies.
"Well, this has been fun, but we have places to be, a war to win, you know the deal. Oh, and don't worry, Sokka. I'll take very good care of your "girlfriend," for you."
And with that, the Fire Princess turned and ran away. Suki lingered a moment longer, sharing one last anguished look with Sokka, before she turned and followed her.
"What are we waiting for? We need to stop them!" Sokka shouted as soon as he had regained his thoughts.
The three of them took off after Azula and Suki, but the two had quite a head start and though Aang did now use his airbending to enhance his speed, their quarry was still eluding them.
And then, they turned a corner, into a large hallway, and were met by a blast of flame. Aang barely managed to block it with a blast of air.
Azula was standing in the centre of the room, her arm outstretched at them, and smirking.
Sokka's heart, which he had already thought was as low as it could go, somehow found a way to sink even lower. The firebending was back. They were too late.
"Oh no," Azula mocked them. "Looks like your plan has failed."
Toph stepped forward, cracking her knuckles. "We're still going to crush you," she snarled.
"No, you won't."
And the three benders came together in a flurry of rocks, fire and air. Sokka, meanwhile, manoeuvred around the Fire Princess, hoping to sneak up behind her and catch her unawares, but before he could he was intercepted by Suki, who levelled her fan at him. Memories of their first sparring session, on Kyoshi island, came back unbidden to his mind at this.
"I can't let you do this," the Kyoshi Warrior told him. "They'll kill my warriors."
Sokka considered for a second, and then he sheathed Space Sword.
"I'm not going to fight you, Suki."
"I know."
"We can get you out of here! We can fake capturing you! If we take you as our prisoner-"
"She'll probably still kill them," Suki finished for him. "It's the sort of thing that she would do."
"Not necessarily!" Sokka was grasping at straws, but he needed to make Suki see that coming with them was the best option. "She would be throwing away a bargaining chip if she did that!"
"She would be making good on a promise. I can't take that risk, not with the lives of my friends," Suki countered.
Sokka opened his mouth to counter but found he had no comeback to that.
"I'm sorry, Sokka. I never gave up on you, and I saw the way you were trying to get Azula to tell you where I was. But it's too late. I will do what I must to protect my warriors."
Sokka slumped his shoulders in resignation. "I understand."
"Suki!" Azula shouted over her shoulder, as she twirled to send a spiralling line of flame at Toph, who used a rock to block its path. "Why aren't you fighting him?"
Suki turned away, at that, and tensed up. Her fists clenched.
"Suki?" Sokka questioned her. He took a step closer, and went to put his hand on her shoulder.
Before he got the chance though,Suki swivelled and her fist made contact with his stomach. He doubled over, his world exploding into pain.
"I'm sorry," she repeated again, as she moved her fist back again, "but-"
"-you will do what you must, I know," Sokka interrupted. "I'm still not going to fight you."
"At that, the wind went out of Suki's sails and her second punch stopped in mid-air. Sokka looked up and met her eyes one last time before she was launched across the room by a rock.
"What was that for?" He demanded furiously.
"I'm sorry, should I have let you get beaten to death by your girlfriend?" Toph shouted back. "We need to get out of here! There's no point us staying any longer!"
"I agree with Toph!" Aang added. Sokka nodded and made to follow them. Azula remained where she was. As the three of them went to leave, Sokka turned to look at the scene once more, his eyes lingering on the figure of Suki with sadness, and then they were gone.
Azula watched them leave and then turned around. Suki had been knocked back against the wall, and as she struggled back to her feet Azula came walking up to her.
"You did well," the Princess said.
Suki did not reply. She didn't know what to say, and really didn't want to grace the vile person in front of her with a response anyway.
"We have them on the run. Their invasion will fail, and soon we shall achieve ultimate victory."
Azula turned and began to walk away from her, but she turned and looked back over her shoulder for one last Parthian shot before she left the room.
"And I just want you to know, we couldn't have done this without you."
Azula turned and walked out of the room, and Suki couldn't control her tears any more. She just sat down and cried.
That was by far the most angsty thing I've ever written. Please don't take this as an attack on Suki's character, for it really is not intended as such. The next thing I write will be nice and fluffy to make up for this.
