Eddie and Jamie Reagan ended up working together because Eddie's regular partner Stephanie's son had a doctor's appointment and she would be picking up a overnight shift because her parents agreed to watch her two kids for the night. Jamie smiled, it had been a long time since he and Eddie worked side by side in a police car. Eddie smiled back at her husband of 4 years. She knew this might be one of their last times riding together if she passed the detective's exam. It was 1 week before Thanksgiving , and 5 weeks before Christmas.

"Do you want to do our grocery shopping after work or do it tomorrow? "Eddie ask her husband.

Jamie says "Does it really make difference?"

Eddie continues to drive. "We need to go tonight babe, we don't have much of anything in the refrigerator."

Jamie nods. They didn't have much of anything in cabinets either, they had been so busy ,they hadn't time to go the grocery store. They had been eating take out for the last 3 days. And they had even finished off the last of the ice cream last night.

Eddie then said "We don't even have ice cream." Jamie looked over at his wife, and smiled ,remembering their late night ,the night before. Jamie had come home late after having a beer with Danny. Jamie walked in the door and found Eddie fast asleep on the couch. Jamie picked her up and carried her into their bedroom. Once he laid in her in the bed, he started to undress her, she woke up in the middle of it and hugged her husband. That hug lead to a night of awesome and late night sex. Then they had shared the last of the pint of cookies and cream ice cream.

The couple continued to talk about what they wanted in a house. They were living in a two bedroom apartment with a den, big living room , small dining room and full bathroom. They had been living there for almost 2 years. They were house hunting.

The two were talking when a call came over the radio from dispatcher.

"Assistance needed at 7709 Caldwell Ave. "

Eddie sighed. Then said "21 David responding."

Dispatch then says "Showing 21 David , responding."

Jamie looked over at Eddie , he was confused. Did she know this address? Had she responded to the house before?

Before Jamie could ask her. Eddie said." Steph and I have been to this house 4 times, all 4 domestic calls. The lady Leslie Roarke that lives there has a very abusive boyfriend ,Her boyfriend Slade Bennett likes to beats her up, She also abuses prescription pills. She has two children."

Jamie then ask "Social Services has never been called?"

Eddie told Jamie . "Yeah but the case worker can't prove the children have been hurt. The most she can ever prove is small signs of neglect. They made her take parenting classes and said he couldn't be around the children."

Jamie just shook his head in disbelief.

Shortly they pulled up to the scene. Eddie and Jamie went up to the 1st officer. It was Officer Jackson from their district.

Hey Sarge, When me and Williamson arrived, the neighbor's grandson was flagging us down. When we got here the paramedics were also pulling up. We got into the house. We found the victim Leslie Roarke on the floor, face down. We felt for a pulse but their wasn't one. She was pronounced dead by the paramedics. It looks like she was beat up and strangled." Officer Jackson told the couple.

"The neighbor heard the kids was banging on the door. When the mother didn't answer the door. The neighbor took the kids into her apartment and had her grandson try and see if she was home. He saw her from the window and called the police. " The officer continued. "The children is still with the neighbor."

"Okay, thanks Jackson" Jamie said.

The couple go into the apartment. They look around, the house was a mess. There is trash all over the place. Eddie checks the cabinets and the refrigerator for food. There is nothing, the only food she sees is some raisin brand, crackers, there's not even milk. Eddie shakes her head. These children were more then slightly neglected. Jamie meanwhile was checking out the children room. There wasn't much in the room at all. Not many clothes or toys. There were just two beat up mattresses. Jamie was in shock. Why haven't these children been put in foster care yet. They both walked out the apartment appalled at what they had just seen. They both then look out at the scene.

Then Officer Jackson shows them to the neighbor's apartment. Eddie and Jamie knocked on the neighbor's door. The elderly woman came to door. "Hi, I'm officer Janko and this is officer Reagan. Eddie told her.

"Hi I'm Sylvia Washington, the neighbor." The neighbor replied

Can you tell us what happened?" Jamie said

"I was sitting in living room. I heard Liam banging on the door. He was banging on the door for at least 15 minutes, so I got up and brought the kids over here because its cold. Then I spent my grandson Tyler over to check on a. Then he came running back over yelling call 911. So I did." Sylvia told the pair of officers.

Eddie and Jamie finished talking to the neighbor. Eddie then asked if they could see the kids. The woman said of course, that Eddie could see Liam.

Eddie walked into the foyer and glanced into the living room. She only saw 4 year old Liam, another child. But she didn't see 20 month-old Carter. Eddie was thinking who is this other child and where was little Carter.

Before Eddie could say anything, she was tackled by a little body. Eddie looked down at the little boy. The sandy brown boy was hugging Eddie so tight. Eddie picked up Liam. She rubbed his back. "Liam , are you okay?" The little boy nodded his head slowly. Then he looked at Jamie.

"Are you a policeman too?" Liam asked Jamie.

"Yes, I am. I'm officer Jamie Reagan" Jamie said.

"How old are you Liam?" Jamie then asked.

"Five." Liam said holding up five fingers.

Then Liam looked back at Eddie. "Officer Eddie, do you know where my mommy is? Is she gone, she open the door for me. "

Eddie didn't know what to say. She didn't want to tell this little boy his mother was dead.

"We'll talk about later little man okay." Eddie just told him.

"Liam, where is Carter?" Eddie asked the boy.

"I dunno know. He was there when I went to school." Liam told her. Then Eddie asked Ms. Sylvia if she knew where Carter was. The woman said no she didn't know where the little boy was. A look of Panic came across Eddie's face. Eddie quickly sat Liam down. "Liam, I will be right back. I promise okay." Liam looked like he was about to cry. "No, officer Eddie please don't go." Liam then grabbed a hold of Eddie's leg.

Jamie looked outside and saw Officer Kara Walsh. He stepped outside for a second and called her over. Officer Kara Walsh came over. Jamie then said something to her, and she followed him inside.

Jamie then got down on Liam's level. "Liam buddy this is officer Walsh , she is going to stay here with you for a minute okay. The boy hesitated then nodded okay. Kara took the little boy's hand and started talking to him. Eddie and Jamie rushed out of the apartment. They ran into Leslie's apartment. They searched all over the place for the 20 month old child. They even had some other patrol cops to help search for him. After about 10 minutes they had accepted the fact the boy was missing.

Jamie immediately got on his phone and called his brother. With in minutes Danny Reagan and his partner Maria Baez drove up.

Jamie and Eddie rushed over to Danny and explain the situation to him. Then Jamie called his captain as much as he wanted to call a amber alert for little Carter, they needed to make sure he wasn't anywhere around the neighborhood or with a friend of Leslie's. No one knew where baby Carter was at this point. The little boy was vulnerable.

A neighbor came up and said "I saw Carter, with Slade."

Eddie said "how long ago was that?"

The neighbor replied. "About an hour and half ago. He was driving his black suv."

Danny and Baez looked at each other. Danny directed another officer to try and get a plate on the car registered in Slade Bennett's name.

Eddie said "I'll call Carmen Ruiz, she's Leslie social worker."

Eddie stepped away from them to make the phone call. After speaking for a few minutes , Eddie came back and said Carmen is going to meet us at the precinct . I think we should take Liam to the station until Leslie gets there."

Jamie nodded his head. "You take Liam back to station, I'm going to stay here and see if I can figure where Slade might have taken Carter. "

Eddie nodded. She walked back over to Ms. Washington's apartment.

Eddie walked back to Liam and Kara. Eddie watched as Kara talked to Liam. She noticed Liam clothes. Liam was wearing a short sleeve shirt blue that was fraying at the sleeves and that was very worn out and very worn jeans. His sneakers were very scuffed up. They were also had holes in them. It was way to cold outside for him to be outside like that.

Eddie kneeled down to Liam's level.

"Hey Liam, I'm going to take you with me to police station." Eddie told the little boy.

Liam was scared but he like officer Eddie. "Is my mama coming too?"

Eddie replied. "No buddy."

Liam then scrunched up his little face. "Is Carter coming?" The little boy didn't see his brother.

"truth?"

Liam shook his head. Yes he wanted to know the truth.

"Right now Carter isn't coming with us. He wasn't at your house. As soon as Carter is back though , he will be there with you okay."

Liam nodded. Eddie picked the boy , she grabbed the boy's little jacket. Again Eddie was shocked to see all the boy had was this thin jacket. Eddie took the young boy to her patrol car. Eddie fastened him in. Eddie quickly turned on the car and then turned on the heat. She then she got in the driver's side and drove to toward the station.
