Chapter 7: Making Nice With Gordon
It had been a couple weeks since Batman brought Rupert Thorne to justice and he had quickly become the talk of the town, especially in the GCPD. Even though he has stopped many crimes in the past two weeks since he made his debut in the city, Police Commissioner Loeb still wanted him taken into custody. "I don't care how many crooks this guy has stopped, nobody in our city takes the law into their own hands! If anything, he's just as bad as the guys he beats to a pulp!", Loeb said. Most of the other cops in the precinct agreed with Loeb. There were a few however that kinda thought Batman might actually be good for Gotham. One of these cops was Captain Jim Gordon. "Uh, sir? If I may say, this Batman has done a lot of good for this city in the past couple weeks, including delivering us one of the city's biggest crime lords.", Gordon said. "I don't care if he gives us all presents on Christmas Eve, Gordon! I want this Batman found and arrested!", Loeb ordered. Later on that night, a couple of thugs were robbing a jewelry store and thought they were striking it big. "Oh, man! These diamonds must be worth a fortune! And their all ours!", one guy said with joy. "Yeah, but let's hurry up before the cops get here. Or worse, that Batman that everyone's talking about.", the other guy said. "Oh, screw him! I'm not afraid of some nutjob in a Halloween costume!", the first guy said. "It's not a Halloween costume. It's a symbol that's supposed to scare your kind.", Said Batman who appeared out of nowhere. "Holy shit! Shoot him!", one of the crooks said. But before the other guy could shoot, Batman used a batarang to knock the gun out of his hands. Batman then knocked him out with one kick. The other guy tried to run, but Batman used his batclaw to pull him back. He then took him out with one punch. As soon as he was done, the cops arrived at the scene because the crooks tripped the silent alarm. As soon as the cops got out of the car, they clearly saw Batman in the store and immediately called for backup. "All available units, we have eyes on Batman! Need backup asap!", one cop said. Batman walked out of the store and said, "Listen! I'm on your side!". "Hands where we can see them!", the other cop ordered. Batman then used a smoke pellet to get away. The cops were coughing and as soon as the smoke cleared away, Batman was gone. Batman had gotten up to the rooftops and started darting across from one to another. A couple more squad cars started rolling in and one of them had Gordon in them. Batman had gotten back down on level ground for a second, but then a car turned around the corner where he was at. Both Gordon and another officer got out and saw their target. "I got him!", the officer said. Gordon stopped him by saying, "Hold your fire!". Batman used this opportunity to get away. When he was gone, the officer asked, "Why did you let him get away, Captain?". "Because I personally believe he can do good for Gotham.", Gordon said. When they got back to the station, Loeb chastised Gordon for letting the Bat get away, but Gordon quickly shook it off and headed home to his family. Gordon had a wife and a daughter who were both named Barbara. After he got home, he went out for a breath of fresh air, while unknown to him, Batman was perched right above him. "Why didn't you let him take me in?", Batman asked. Gordon jumped at the sound of his voice, but then looked up. "Because I honestly think you're doing some good for this city. For too long, Gotham has belonged to scum and barely anybody has the courage to do anything about it anymore. Most of the other cops see you as just a freak in a mask, but I think you just wanna help. And I hope that is true on your end.", Gordon admitted. "It is true. I've been meaning to talk to you anyway. You're one of the few good cops left in the department. I believe that Gotham can once again be a prosperous and peaceful city and I want to help it get there, but I can't do it alone. I could use help from a good man like you. And Loeb will never have to know.", Batman said. "Tempting offer. I'll get back to you on that.", Gordon said. When he looked up again, he was gone without a trace. "Or maybe not.", he said.
