A/N: I OWN NOTHING!
Prologue
You probably heard about me, but then again, probably not.
I'm a Detective. Not really high on the scale like with Holmes, Murdoch, Schindler or Magnum. But I've made a name for myself over the many years I've lived.
The Fairytale Detective.
Don't laugh! You'll understand in a minute.
The agency I work for works in the... Unusual activity of the world. There are Three different divisions: The Paranormal Division (called Mystery Case Files or MCF for short) works with Vengeful Ghosts, Modern Evil, Revenants, Madmen with an Immortal Complex(*cough*Charles Dalimar*cough*), that kind of thing. There's what most jokingly call the "Scooby-Doo" Division that work on cases that you would find in the classic "Scooby-Doo! Where are You?" show, Monsters that are actually Men in Masks (Most of the cases in the Scooby-Doo series were real cases solved by this agency. The only changes made were the names of all involved). Finally, there's the Mystical Division, Fairy Tales that went wrong, Folk Lore curses that came to life because of a curious souls foolishness, or, most often, Tales that were what really happened but were changed to be more child friendly and give someone a quick buck on stories they 'Made Up' (Sorry Misters Grimm and Mister Disney. Love your work!).
I was actually pretty young when I was recruited. I had always loved reading mystery novels, folk lore and watching too many episodes of 'Murder, She Wrote'. Those were what inspired me to want to be a Detective. My first case was small and had to do with a missing SAT Answer book that was found, not in the Bad Boy's locker like was suspected, the Nerd's or the Library Mouse's but the P.E. Teacher's. Turns out he never graduated and had stolen the book, not only to give him the answers for him to copy so he can take the test and graduate, but also sell cheat sheets to the highest bidder in the school.
I was approached after I left the Principal's office, where I had given my findings to the Police, and was given a card by a man in one of those old fashion trench coats. "If you're interested in real Sleuthing, call that number. We'll help you get to where you want."
Apparently one of their agents went to the same school and always kept an eye out for potential recruits.
And so, at age fourteen, I had a job as an intern at the agency in the Mystical Division. It was only after four years of juggling school work, coffee runs, paperwork organizing for my superiors and a Triple Dog Dare Mailing Mishap (don't ask, it was Mingi's fault in the first place) that I had my first case at eighteen after my superior went missing on a case and I snuck out to go after him.
It involved three Pigs, that were actually Boars, that were really the kidnapped Princes from a nearby kingdom. Their Kidnapper was their father's advisor who was really a Wizard/Werewolf and I was so happy I wasn't bitten or scratched. To make a long story short, I had saved the Princes, broke the spell, stopped the bad guy and gave the Princes and their Father a Happily Ever After.
I also got marriage proposals from all three Princes but had to turn them down when they started arguing over who's proposal I would take.
If you looked closely at that case, you'll see it seems to resemble something. A hint: Three Pigs. A Big Bad Werewolf.
Now you know why I am called the Fairytale Detective.
But that was only the first case and I wasn't even legal! Of course, nothing really kicked off til I was older.
After those cases, my name became known far and wide!
Not my real name, of course not. No one knows my name except my boss and roommates. I don't give it unless something is dire is happening. And no, I won't tell you my name... Yet.
Now! I do believe it's time for me to begin my story.
It starts in the Agency. About three days after my 21st birthday...
"This is possibly the worst condition I've seen you come back in!"
"Come on, now Jagiya! It's not like I knew I was going to drive in the middle of a Blizzard and a case!"
I shook my head at my Coworker from the Paranormal Division, Master Detective Jung Yunho, as he stood in his muddy outfit of a black shirt, pants, boots, gloves, trench coat, scarf and black and brown fedora. From the tears and burns in his coat and his frostbitten fingers and lips, he seemed to have found a case immediately after Ravenhearst burned down.
I turned to look at Kang Yeosang, mine and Yunho's coworker whose job it was find homes for victims we free/find on our cases, and he looked at me. We simultaneously sighed and he shook his head before walking away. "I'll go inform the boss he's back."
After he disappeared around the corner, I grabbed Yunho by the back of his coat and dragged him to my office.
"Hey!"
I walked past the office of the "Scooby Doo" Division Level Four Detective Choi San and seeing me drag his friend/roommate/coworker to my office made him curious. He stood up from his paperwork and followed behind.
"It took me a month to sew that coat back up and you return with it in partial tatters!" I pushed open the door and pulled the coat off of him before pushing him into the chair in front of my desk. San came in and closed the door behind him. He took the blanket laying on an old-fashioned couch I kept in the corner of my office and wrapped it around his friend's shoulders.
"I'm sorry! It's not my fault! It's not as if I knew I would stumble on a Banshee in Celtic Ruins! I didn't even know Alison would ask for an interview for her presentation!' he paused and leaned back in the chair with a smirk, tossing his hat onto my desk. 'Though, I gotta say, she was quite pretty."
I snorted.
"No surprise you would find her attractive, you don't interact with most people hyung...' San said sitting on the chairs arm. He watched as I sat behind my desk, placing the coat in my bag to sew up later, and started clearing the piles of papers in front of me. 'and most of your Division are Men anyways. Unless there is something you're not telling us?" he asked raising an eyebrow at him as I lifted his hat off my desk.
Yunho sputtered for a minute looking between both a smirking San and me. He laughed taking his hat from me. "As if! Seonghwa-hyung would have a fit if I kept a secret from you guys.' He tossed his hat behind him and I watched in amusement as it landed perfectly on the hat rack. He suddenly placed his elbows on his knees, leaned forward, and became serious. 'Have you gotten any sleep lately?"
San's head snapped to me and his eyes narrowed on my face. Seeing as himself, Yunho, Yeosang, Seonghwa, myself and four other coworkers lived on the same loft apartment building, it was a given that everyone had a key to everyone else's apartment in case of emergencies and/or nightmares. San had been the one to wake me from the dream I had last night and had stayed over after to make sure I was alright.
I winced over the fact he noticed the dark circles under my eyes. "Not really, Yunho-ssi."
I pulled out the notebook I had written my dreams in since they started and handed it to him. "I had just finished writing down the latest dream when you came back."
He took the book and flipped to last night's date. "'The fog lifted, and I saw a child with tan skin and reddish-brown hair surrounded by a bassinet of green Ivy Leaves on a lake.' Your too young to have kids."
"I get that. I'm not even married."
"True,' San said. 'though I think Hongjoong-hyung would offer if he wasn't married to his desk."
"Don't you mean 'Married to Seonghwa-Eomma'?" I smirked and we laughed, seeing as the eldest two in our group of friends acted a lot like our parents most of the time. It was a running joke to call Hongjoong Dad or Appa and Seonghwa Mom or Eomma when we all were eating dinner together every Friday night.
When Yunho calmed down he continued reading. "'The blanket the child wore was embodied with small crowns and toads.'"
"They were Frogs."
"Then why did you write 'toads'? 'In the hands of the child was a ball of gold. The child tossed the ball up and down five times. The first four times when the ball was in the air, four tiaras appeared, circling the ball. All fading too fast for me to tell what they looked like. On the fifth time, the ball fell into the lake. The child suddenly disappeared, and I was suddenly surrounded by a circle of glowing eyed frogs.' Glowing how exactly?"
"Glowing as in like a lightbulb."
San, obviously growing tired of Yunho's questions, took the book, used it to smack the elder's head before he began reading. "'A frog of enormous size then jumped out of the water and landed in front of me. In its mouth was a golden arrow. The Arrow was dropped at my feet, and the frog became a Man in a white shirt, blue trousers, brown leather boots and a dark green cloak with a gold, frog-shaped clasp.' He gave me a look before going back to reading. 'His blue eyes glowed for a second before turning red, his hand lifted, reaching out to me.'"
And that was it.
He lowered the book and looked up at me. "And all your dreams have been like that since Young-Min seonbae died?"
I nodded, taking the book back from him. "Yes. Every night since then. The only constant things in all the dreams are the Frogs, the Tiaras and the Man.' I sighed picking up the last of the papers on my desk. 'I've talked to Jaehyun-ssi to see if the resident Fortune Teller knew something, but he said he saw nothing."
Yunho sighed and lowered his head. "It's times like this where I wish I had been able to prevent Madame Fate's death by Charles. She would have made sense of your dreams I have absolutely no doubt."
I picked up the folder I had put all the papers in and got up to place it in a filing cabinet. "I agree. And you only got onto that case by accident, not to mention you somehow managed to call the Queen of England in Buckingham Palace via a payphone."
I turned around and was about to say more when I saw something on my desk. The two men, seeing it too, sat bolt upright and looked straight at it. In the center of my cleared desk was a small Journal Book and an old Tape Recorder. On top of it all was a note with two words.
