Six months have passed since the brothers have went to their separate ways Luigi joining the police force and Mario decided to continue working as a plummer until he could find another job, but on the sixth month he got fired because he had to work on the same day his brother was graduating from the academy and not wanting to miss it he chose to go to the ceremony which made his brother happy but unfortunately after the ceremony was over when he and Luigi met up he got a call from his boss and told him that he was fired which he just hung up not wanting to hear the lecture, though Luigi heard the whole conversation and apologies to Mario for causing him to loose his job but his brother just shrugged and told him that it wasn't his fault and that he was planning on quitting anyways and Luigi nods and thanks him for coming to see him graduate
Eight months passed which around that time Luigi ran into his school crush Daisy and they started dating for about four years before they got married with Mario being the best man, sometime after the wedding Mario started dating for about a few months but after catching his girlfriend cheating on him with another guy they broke up, sometime after this he got a job as a teacher, which a new one was built years after the old one Mario and Luigi used to go to was torn down with new rules and regulations to follow to avoid the same thing from happening again, but after two years he realized that teaching wasn't his thing and realized that his dream wasn't to be a teacher or professor, even though he didn't like teaching it was the only job he was able to find as he's not going to work at any restaurant or work at a store and he's definitely not going back to working at a plummer after all the shit he had to go through
Now in the present a year later Mario was putting stuff away from today's lesson, after trying to find a job he was still stuck working at the school because the other jobs he was looking for were either not for him or required him to have a degree, after putting the supplies away he locked the room door and leaves the building and heads home, but on his way home it started raining making him wish that he took a taxi or had a car but fortunately he had a raincoat and umbrella, as he headed he passes by a hospital and stops and steps back before stopping in front of the hospital, lowering the umbrella and looks at the building as rain poured down, he stood there for a good forty minutes not caring that he was starting to get soaked or people passing by staring at him before taking a deep breath before walking inside. He stood at the entrance and takes a deep breath before walking inside and heads for the front desk and asked to apply for a job at the hospital which the receptionist looks at him before grabbing the application and hands it to him, after which he sits down and signs it answering the questions it had which took a few minutes before finishing and hands it to the receptionist who tells him that they'll let him know if he's been accepted and with that Mario thanks them and leaves the hospital heading home.
Once he got home Mario headed to the kitchen to make something to eat, on his way to the kitchen he started to get a painful feeling in his chest like someone just punched him there which caused him to let out a violent cough after collecting himself he continue to the kitchen, when he walked by the fridge and stops to look at the picture of when he and Luigi became Plummers it was on their first day of their job, a faint smile appear on his face remembering the good times they had before opening the fridge to grab some things for dinner, after making dinner which was pork chops and gravy. After dinner he cleaned up and went to bed, the next day he woke up and goes to make breakfast, since it was the weekend he didn't need to go to work he had the whole day to himself so he decided to go for a walk and so that's what he does, after cleaning and washing up he leaves the house and walks around the Mushroom Kingdom, during his walk he saw many crazy things: like a guy with a monitor for a head practicing police brutality on a green humanoid frog just for accidentally crossing the crosswalk on a green light, Mario knew about this guy through reputation as he's known for violently attacking people for the smallest offense and he wonders how the guy became a police officer, across the road a scientist was standing in the middle of the road for reasons unknown to anyone but him until he got tackled by the same guy with a monitor for a head who process to strangle him until other police officers tackle him and drag him away, shrugging Mario walks away getting a violent cough again and continues his walk through the kingdom, after a walking for about two hours his phone started to ring which he answers. Once he answered it was the hospital that called but they told him that he wasn't accepted to which he sighs before telling them that he understood and hangs up, no longer feeling like going for a walk he decides to head home disappointed. Once he got to his neighborhood he goes to his house and opens the door, once he gets inside the lights turn on and he sees Luigi, Daisy, his niece Rose, their parents, and some of their friends who they met during their time as plummers all yell "SURPRISE!!!" which almost gave him a heart attack and he sees a banner on the wall of the living room saying happy birthday Mario.
It took him a moment to recover from the surprised before he smiled and said "Thank you everyone I was so busy I almost forgot today was my birthday." Luigi walks up to Mario smiling and hands him a gift saying "Happy Birthday brother" and they hug each other joined by Daisy and Rose, after exchanges with the rest of the family and friends the party was underway they ate, Mario open gifts his friends and family got for him, and now were relaxing in different parts of the house chatting away Mario and Luigi were in the living room talking about what they've done for the past few years while Rose was watching the TV flipping through the channels
Luigi looks at his daughter before looking at Mario before saying "Ever since she turned fifteen she's been more focus on other things instead of hanging out with family" as he shakes his head before sighing "But that's to be expected with teens" Mario lightly chuckles "reminds me of how we were when we were her age" Luigi laughs a little "Tell me about it, if I remember correctly didn't you pull a prank on our science teacher, Ms what's her name?" he ask as he try to remember "Ms Puff" Mario told him as he and his brother laugh "Yeah her, man I have to admit that powder bomb was the funniest thing you've ever done" as he laughed "Yeah until I got in trouble for it when they found out who did it" Mario told him
After this Mario looks at his niece and asked "So Rose how have you been, how was school?" Rose looks away from the TV and says "I've been good uncle Mario just been hanging out with my friends and school is a pain in the ass" Luigi sighs "Rose language we talked about this, multiple times" she sighs and says "Yeah yeah I know dad no swearing until I'm an adult but it's true though" before she goes back to the TV flipping through the channels again until she crosses the News channel talking about a drug bust and saw his dad talking to a reporter on the broadcast and says "Hey dad you're on TV" Luigi looks at the TV and says "Oh yeah we busted a drug operation in that location recently" Mario looks at the TV before saying "that sounds dangerous but then again that's to be expected in law enforcement" Luigi nods "yeah it is I actually went to the hospital once during a shootout but don't worry just had a bullet hole in my chest barely missed my lung" Mario looks at him in shock as he wasn't told this and Luigi noticed this and says "I didn't tell you because I knew you would worry but you shouldn't have to because this is going to happen as a police officer" Mario nods but still worried that one day he'll end up watching his brother's burial, Luigi looks at Rose and tells her to be careful when she joins the force
Rose nods and looks at the TV watching her father on the news talking to the reporter about the drug bust and how it was the hard work and dedication of the MKLE (Mushroom Kingdom Law Enforcement) that made this bust possible, ever since she was little Rose wanted to follower her father's footsteps and join the law enforcement and her parents support her choice even though Daisy is worried that she might be killed on duty but supports her decision nonetheless, the three look at the TV Daisy walks to them placing her hands on her husband's shoulders and kisses his cheek she ask them what they're talking about to which Luigi he points at the TV which she looks at it and responded with "I see" and looks at Mario before asking "Did Luigi tell you about a birthday speech he made for you?" Luigi looks at her with the 'that was supposed to be a surprise' look which she responds with a smirk and Mario looks at him with a 'wait really' look
Luigi slumps his head in defeat and says "Eh what the hell" and gets up beer in hand "Everyone gather around" he said as everyone gather in or near the living room "I have a birthday speech for my amazing brother right here even though I was going to surprise him with but due to some unforeseen circumstances" he glares at Daisy who giggles "Might as well do it now" he inhales before starting "Mario ever since I left to join the force you have been through thick and thin and delt with hardship but no matter what you powered through and overcame everything life threw at you, let me tell you without him I wouldn't be where I am but most importantly I was there for him and we've always had each other's backs from when were kids to adults because of that I couldn't have wished for a better brother" he told his brother places his arm around his shoulders before continuing "no matter the mistakes or errors we made in the past he was there for me and I was there for him and nothing will break the bond we have" and raises his drink before saying "Happy Birthday bro" and everyone else says happy birthday to Mario who was touched by the speech and the two hug
After the speech most of their friends and family left and now it was just Mario, Luigi and his wife and daughter while Rose was watching the TV and Daisy was resting on the couch Mario and Luigi sitting down outside chilling beer in their hands and said nothing just enjoying the evening before Mario sighs and says to his brother "Luigi I just want to say thank you for that speech I couldn't have asked for a better brother even though we are now living our own separate lives now" Luigi smiles and says "your welcome brother, I've planning that speech ever since you gave me a birthday speech because I thought it was only fair to make one for you" Mario laughs "bro you didn't have to do that" he told his brother who just laughs saying "I know but I thought it would be a good idea to show you my appreciation" Mario smiles and lightly punches his brother's shoulder before looking into the sky sighing but Luigi knew something was on his mind and asked him in concern "you alright Mario?" he looks at him and sighs "I'm fine but I'm just worried that someday you won't return" he admitted to which Luigi closes his eyes sighing as he knew he would bring this up "Mario you shouldn't have to worry because no matter what happens I'll always make it back but even if the day comes where I don't return you got to stay strong for us especially my family as they'll need someone to look out for them and I want you to be there for them if anything is to happen to me" he told him and Mario nods and says "ok I'll be strong for them" although he still can't bare the thought of losing his brother but after hearing his brother say this he decided that he's going to help his Sister-in-law and niece if something happens to Luigi
After that it was silence as the two just stared at the sky for a while before Luigi breaks the silence saying "You know what" he started "If you want to I can take you for a ride along it'll almost be like old times, just give the word and I'll take you" Mario looks at him surprised by the suggestion before collecting himself and says "I'll think about it" after that the two get up and head inside just as Daisy and Rose were just about to clean up and so the two brothers jump in to help as well, after they finish cleaning up Luigi and his family say their goodbyes to Mario before heading home. Later that night Mario was sitting in the living room thinking about the conversation he and Luigi had earlier which he knew that Luigi was right so he needed to think of a way to help his family besides being emotional support, but after some time thinking he couldn't figure it out so he decided he's going to sleep it over so he got up headed to his room and sleeps
The next day
Mario was sound asleep as he was sleeping in since he didn't work today but that didn't stop his alarm from going off which resulted in him punching it for waking him up and tried to fall back to sleep but finds himself unable to sleep so he got up and went to the bathroom to wash up when he got that same painful feeling he had the other day and coughed again, after a minute of coughing he manages to collect himself before going to the bathroom and washes up, the rest of the morning would be the usual him having breakfast and the morning being uneventful but when he went to make breakfast he noticed that he was out of stuff to make breakfast so he decided to go to the store to get some food
an few minutes later
He gets to the store and grabs a basket before walking around looking for stuff to make and stops in the dairy section and looks through it when he gets that same painful feeling again but this time he felt like something heavy was on his chest, he tried to ignore it and continue his shopping but before he could he ended up collapsing onto the floor. He doesn't know what happened but when he woke up he was in a ambulance and he looked around in confusion as a paramedic checks on him but he thought he just had a episode and even told the paramedic that he was find it was probably just a episode and to just drop him off at a curb until the paramedic put on a stethoscope and puts it on Mario's back and ask him to breath which he does and does the same on his chest, Mario thinks he's good until the paramedic asked him
"Sir are you a smoker?" the paramedic asked which got Mario confused and says "No...why?"
At the hospital they put him in a PET scanner after the scan all Mario heard was ringing as the doctor explained his situation to him but he was too shocked and distracted to hear most of it and the doctor took noticed and asked
"Sir do you understand what I just said?" this pulls Mario out of his thoughts and looks at the doctor before saying "Yes, lung cancer, inoperable" the doctor nods and says "Now due to it being at stage 2 you'll only have two years to live at the most but with treatment you'll have a fighting change"
A few hours past and Mario was allowed to go home but he once he got home he just sat in his living room staring at the TV, though he never turned it on, the look of depression on his as he looks at the TV for a good while before he sighs and grabs his phone and calls Luigi who answered
"Hey Luigi" Mario said and Luigi responds and it sounded like he was tired "Hey Mario what's up?" Mario noticed this before saying "Sorry did I wake you?" Luigi shakes his head on his end and insisted "No no no you didn't" before asking "So what can I do for you?" Mario breathes slowly before saying "About that ride along"
the next day
in one of the neighborhoods in the Mushroom Kingdom in a undercover vehicle Luigi and his partner, a anthropomorphic fox wearing a green jumpsuit, with a white jacket , robotic legs, and a headset, were sitting in the front while Mario was sitting in the backseat all three were wearing bullet proof vests looking at a house a few houses away and Luigi points at the said house
"Now Mario you see that house right there?" he said before continuing "not the three story one the red one next to it, we were informed that there's a mushroom lab" Mario looks at the house he was talking about before asking "So what makes you think it's a Mushroom lab?" Luigi looks at him "Our snitch they said that someone Bluejay, they also said that they're a rather odd fellow but does a decent job in the lab adding something sweet to the mushrooms" the fox looks at Luigi before saying "Bluejay? Strange name if you ask me they probably have a obsession with that type of bird" Luigi looks at his partner "Well Fox that's one theory or they just think the name sounds cool" (A/N don't do drugs it'll lead to problems)
After the explanation a car with a family in it drive away and Luigi pulls out a walkie talkie and gives the raiding team the green light and the raid team drive to the house with Luigi driving behind them, once they get to the front of the house they stop Luigi stopping behind them and the raid team get out of the vehicles and head towards the house. Without looking at Mario Luigi explains how raids work and the precautions they take just in case things get heated, inside a big guy wearing a yellow shirt, purple overalls, and yellow hat with a W on it was sitting at a table in the middle of making mushrooms unaware of the raid team outside who get to the backdoor and wait as one of them get to the door with a battering ram, another one of the members gives the signal and the one with the ram breaks the door down getting the guy in the yellow shirt attention and tries to make a run for it as the team rushes inside after him, during the small chase the guy in the yellow shirt looks back and doesn't see a chair in the way and trips over it and the team get to him rather quickly because of it and put the cuffs on him
Outside in the car Luigi gets a call from one of the members of the team informing them that they got the suspect "Any ID on the suspect?" the team member looks for an ID and search the wallet before responding "Yes suspect name Wario" Luigi and Fox look at each other before Fox says "Speaking of strange names" causing Luigi to nod "Yeah but we've heard stranger" he told his partner and Mario looks at the house before asking him "Luigi is it possible for me to go inside and look at the lab?" Luigi looks at him surprised but says "Maybe but tell you what we'll go inside and look to see if it's safe"
With that the two unbuckle and leave the car to go inside leaving Mario behind who sat in the vehicle waiting patiently until he saw something from the corner of his eyes as he sees someone wearing a blue and white hoodie, brown khaki pants, white and blue socks, and flip flop like sandals that appeared to have been hastily put on climbing out a window on the second floor but they appear to be clumsy as they lose their footing and slips and lands onto the ground, the person gets up their left arm rubbing their back and it's revealed that their left arm was robotic, Mario looks at the person who he now noticed was a young woman almost in their mid twenties but he also noticed that she looked kinda familiar but couldn't remember why until realization hit him when he was in highschool he remembers seeing someone that looked like her and how she was called the innocent student, but seeing her coming out of a house that had a mushroom lab shocked him
He was so shocked that he ended up saying out loud in a whisper "Oh my God" this got her attention as she leaned against the wall and she looks to left and sees him, she drops her head as she was spotted by someone before looking at him finger over her mouth basically asking him not to give away her location before running to a green car ,a few feet from the car Mario is in as he looks at her direction, and gets in it as Mario gets out and goes to the vehicle as she drives off but he sees the license plate with the words Bluejay on it just as she speeds away as he watches in complete bafflement.
