"Wow, I thought these were all rumors." A woman said in awe as she walked towards the agents in the basement.
"I'm sorry?" Jack asked, turning around from staring at the hidden doorway.
"There's an age-old rumor around campus that there were hidden rooms and passageways in all the old buildings, they were used to hold refugees, oh, about 200 years ago.. I thought it was just a made-up story, until today. This is the first passageway that has been found." The woman explained.
"Wow, that's amazing. Who are you exactly?" Bobby asked.
The woman slightly chuckled. Sorry, I was so engrossed in the awe of finding the cave, I forgot to introduce myself! I'm Dean Maria Cortez."
"Nice to meet you." Jack replied. "Do you know who would have access to knowledge of these passageways?"
She laughed. "Oh, everyone who ever went to this school, their friends. It's common knowledge, often the brunt of a Halloween prank. I for sure didn't think it was real, until today. We have done several improvements and remodels in many other buildings, including the library, and no one had found anything. I just thought it was the product of someone's imagination. I can see I was wrong. Can I see inside?" She asked, curious.
"I'm sorry." Jack said, stepping in front of her. "It's a crime scene right now. But when it gets released, you're free to go inside." He said, then looked at Bobby. "Come with me?"
Bobby nodded, following Jack inside the passageway, into a particular room. "Where do you think he took them?"
Jack shook his head, his eyes not being able to look away from the blood stained message on the wall that read; 'D and Donna were here'. "Wherever it is, I don't think it's good."
"But they're smart, right? They led us here."
He nodded in reply. "Yes, they did."
?-?
"Hep! Help us please!" D exclaimed as he waved his arms when he heard a car nearby. It was the first one since they got there, and he knew they'd been there a while, he could feel the tolerable air get cooler. The sun was going down. He heard the car pass by, so he regretfully knelt next to his wife again. "We'll get the next one, I promise." He whispered to her. She moaned in reply. "I just hope it's not too late." He whispered to himself.
Just as he was preparing himself for freezing to death that night, he heard a car slowly driving in reverse. Encouraged by the sound, D unseeingly looked around, hopeful.
"What happened?" A woman yelled from inside the car.
"My wife and I were kidnapped, then left to die here in the woods, these sacks cinched up over our heads, unable to come off. Please, help us, my wife is sick, she needs a hospital." D pleaded. "I'm a retired FBI agent, I have identification that proves this," He said, patting his pockets, not able to find his wallet. "I might've forgotten to put it in my pocket yesterday, or he took it." He embarrassedly replied. Seconds passed, and were it not for the low hum of the still car, he would've thought the woman drove away.
"D?" Donna whispered. "Are we home? I can't see."
"Soon, honey, soon." He replied, comforting her.
"Alright." The woman finally said, seeing the exchange. "Get in."
"Thank you!" D gratefully replied, picking up his wife.
"But, I'm not taking off those sacks until we get to the nearest hospital, you hear?"
"He nodded. "Completely understand. I wouldn't want our daughter driving some strange people just as much as you don't want to, but I appreciate your compassion."
"Yeah." She replied. "There's a blanket in the trunk. Let me get it, and you can lay her on it in the backseat." She said, getting out of the running car to go in the trunk, then laying the blanket across the seats in the back. Once she finished, D placed Donna in the back, and he got in the front seat.
"Thank you again." D said to the woman as she started driving.
"Yeah." She replied, focusing on the road ahead.
?-?
"Forensics and a call to D and Donna's doctor confirm that the bloody message was written in Donna's blood, the type matches, hers, not D's." Sarah said, getting off the phone that evening.
"What could he have done to them that she was bleeding that much?" Jack asked, his eyes nearly glazed over from being up for over 48 hours straight.
"Or she could've done it herself. They did find that bloody rusty nail." Bobby suggested.
"But why?"
"Because she wanted to let us know where they were."
Jack sighed. "We need to find them."
"And we will." Sue said. "But you're not going to if you don't sleep, and change into some clothes that are not almost 3 days old. We all have changed and taken a few cat naps. Why don't you?"
"Because I don't want to miss anything." He replied.
"You will, if you don't get at least some sleep. We don't have any eminent leads right now. Why don't you take a little nap?"
He studied her, considering what she said. "Alright, but if anything comes in, you'll wake me, right?"
She nodded. "Immediately."
"He nodded. "Alright." He said, then slowly and sleepily walked to a couch in a nearby room.
Once out of sight, Sue turned to Bobby. "So, what can we do to find them?"
